A MESSAGE FROM THE CURATOR The landscape of American Dance has many representatives, techniques, and traditions. It is vast and eclectic by design, encompassing what has come before with an eye toward what can and might be ahead of us. At its best, there is a multitude of coexisting artistic voices. Each curator for American Dance Platform contributes to this landscape knowing their offering is both of the moment and an entry in the archive of how we will reflect on dance from this time. In considering what would represent my values and vision for the 2024 American Dance Platform, three themes became paramount: Legacy, Emergence, and Jazz as a Black American art form that could only originate in this country. The artists on this program represent multiple histories and regions. Bringing perspectives from the south, west coast, and, of course, New York. They embody community and collaboration, collective vision and bold individualism. I come to their work as a fan first, and am honored to have them involved in this event. I am deeply grateful to Danni Gee, Linda Shelton, and The Joyce Theater Foundation for their support of this platform and belief in my vision. This week of American dance promises to be enlivened and embodied for the artists and audiences. Thank you for joining us. Melanie George Curator, American Dance Platform 2024 Dramaturg, Scholar, and Jacob’s Pillow Associate Curator

Wolland MUSICIANS ALPHONSO HORNE (Trumpet) | OCIE DAVIS (Percussion) JOSH GREEN (Percussion) | WILLIE MORRIS (Saxophone) RASHAAN SALAAM (Trombone) | STEPHANIE YOUNG (Tuba) I dedicate this work to my city, family, and souls lost. 2005 was a moment in time never to be forgotten. I will forever honor with reverence the preservation of who we are and why we are. We are the culture barriers of our experience. The stories belong to us. Ase.
Takin’ it to the Roots is a dance theater work that investigates the creative impulse in Gibson’s choreography and practice, which is rooted in her New Orleans African American experience. A preacher’s daughter, she grew up with knowledge of Congo Square and its significance to New Orleans dance history. She has a clear understanding that the influences of Senegambian and Angolan dance on the enslaved Africans in New Orleans had as much to do with her attraction to the communal experience of Second Line culture as the sound of the brass band blaring or the buck jumping community members improvising their lived testimonies. Takin' It To The Roots was a National Performance Network (NPN) Creation Fund Project co-commissioned by the South Dallas Cultural Center in partnership with the Ashe Cultural Center in New Orleans, and NPN.

Celebrating and elevating their survival amidst the barriers that diminish collective liberation, Soles has bottled this synergy into an enticing evening of rhythmic exchange. Rooted in the freedom their crafts provide them and in dialogue with live music, this trio invites the audience to pause, witness, and receive three women of culture boldly taking the floor... here and NOW. A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTS Time has proven that no backstory is linear, continuously revealing how all of our histories remain intertwined. From the spice trade to the middle passage to the transatlantic; from the Nuyo-Rican arrival to the 1965 Immigration Act; from dhabas to bodegas – we embody the histories of our intersectional past, finding our cultures’ rhythms as our collective language. When it comes to music, the one thing we do share? The floor. From a sixteen-beat teental, underbellied with a twelve-count bulerías, finishing with three and a break, the floor lets us share our cultures across bars. Although a shave and haircut to one is a remate to another and a tehai to the third, we know that when we all arrive, we’ve found our collective musical break. As percussive artists, we’ve consistently had to ask for permission: permission to create new music, permission to break rules, and permission to even dance on the floor that is built for us to use. Tonight, we offer you ourselves, our history, our music, here and now – in abundance. So… can we dance here? হ্যাঁ . Si. Yes. Can We Dance Here? premiered at Gibney Spotlight Performances in 2022. Run time: Approximately 75 minutes, including 15-minute intermission.

The Rock Cries Out To Us Today (Excerpt) MAYA ANGELOU Each of you a bordered country, Delicate and strangely made proud, Yet thrusting perpetually under siege. Your armed struggles for profit Have left collars of waste upon My shore, currents of debris upon my breast. Yet, today I call you to my riverside, If you will study war no more. Come, clad in peace and I will sing the songs The Creator gave to me when I And the tree and stone were one.

He has performed on stages across New York City, the United States, and abroad as both a musician and musical director with a vast array of performers. Ryan’s musical offerings can be heard throughout an ever-expanding catalog of recorded collaborations as an instrumentalist, composer, producer, and mixing engineer by way of his music production studio, Wilberforce & Annie; a boutique production house founded on amplifying the voices of now. OKAI MUSIK (Percussion), Brooklyn-born with Haitian descent, was beating on anything that he could get his hands on to help his imagination grow from a young age. His ears became infected with the hard boom bap drum loops of Hip Hop, and roots music from the Caribbean. Those sounds led him on a musical path to find rock, Jazz, samba, salsa, rumba, and pretty much anything that involves percussion. Okai has had the pleasure of performing before audiences at Brooklyn Museum, the legendary African art auction exhibition at Sotheby’s, Madison Square Garden, Carnegie Hall, and other venues throughout the States. Internationally, Cuba, Haiti, Puerto Rico, Canada, Tanzania, Ivory Coast, Australia, Japan, and Brazil have been showered with his sounds and soon the rest of the world will. ANDREW "AJ JAGANNATH" (Electric Guitar), born and raised in Harrisburg, PA, became infatuated with the guitar at age 13, after a foot injury prevented him from playing sports over one summer. He had many early musical influences to draw from between his mother’s Western classical piano training, his father’s love of music and extensive record collection, and his grandmother’s knowledge and proficiency in singing Carnatic music. Through the use of effects pedals, multiple amplifiers, triggered sounds, and live looping, AJ strives to create a rich sonic atmosphere with the guitar that goes beyond the scope of sounds traditionally associated with the instrument. AJ has performed on stages such as the Apollo Theater, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Bowery Ballroom, Brooklyn Bowl, ABC’s The View, and many more. He currently lives in Queens, NY, where he runs a recording studio and works as an engineer.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for more than four decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 475 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (1st–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 300 performances for audiences of over 100,000. Visit Joyce.org for more information.
FUNDERS Many Thanks to The Joyce's Institutional Funders for Keeping Us Moving Forward An abundance of gratitude to Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Representative Jerrold Nadler, and Representative Nydia M. Velázquez for their visionary leadership that established the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant program, which made the reopening of The Joyce Theater in 2021 and the reemergence of many dance companies possible.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION VISION STATEMENT
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The Joyce Theater Foundation is committed to fostering and supporting a diverse and inclusive environment, both on and off stage. We embrace and celebrate diversity in all its forms, and value the rich experiences and perspectives that arise from differences in race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, religion, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and cognitive and physical ability.
The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities. This acknowledgement demonstrates our institution’s commitment to the process of dismantling the legacies of colonialism and cultural imperialism.
We strive to counteract the social injustices and racism that exist within our communities, our nation, and our world. Our aim as an organization is to embody the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. To achieve this, we will: • Create and implement proactive diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice initiatives; • Establish and maintain a culture of safe sharing, intentional listening, learning, and growth;
We acknowledge the ongoing violence towards Indigenous people through systemic inequality. We pay our respect to the Indigenous peoples who lived and continue to live upon this land, and whose rich history, artistic practices, and spirituality are tied to this land. It is within our responsibility as a cultural institution and our commitment to diversity and inclusion to embody a commitment to Indigenous rights and cultural equity.
• Engage with and support disenfranchised communities by sharing information and resources and ensuring accessibility;
We sincerely invite you as an audience member to take a moment to reflect on the history and legacy of displacement, migration, and settlement.
• Develop metrics and conduct regular reviews of our programs and policies to hold ourselves accountable and shift as neededs.
It is our intention to work with local Native American arts councils to better inform our land acknowledgment practices and anticipate that it will evolve over time.
With these goals in place and our Vision Statement in mind, we are dedicated to the continued learning and growth needed to foster an inclusive environment for all. This is an ongoing process and by nature will be an evolving statement.
