ABOUT THE PROGRAM

GIGENIS, the generation of the Earth

"Fear must not decide for you, you must..." - Akram Khan

GIGENIS, the generation of the Earth is inspired by the Mahabharata. Akram keeps returning to this epic tale of power, greed, loss, joy, and fear, all brewing within one family. His obsession with this story helps remind him, that ‘fear’ can give birth to so much devastation and carnage.

GIGENIS is about a mother of two sons who has lost her husband to war. And towards the end of her life when one son dies in battle, she reflects on how this all came to be.

How she saw the world when she was a child, how she saw the world when she married, how she saw the world when she gave birth, and finally, how she saw the world when she experienced the death of her son.

These questions haunt her till her very end… And is very much a metaphor of how Akram feels about the world today. How did two sons both from the same womb, take entirely different pathways? One advocates harmony, and the other revels in chaos.

Are we in control of our narratives or are we just destined to believe so?

Akram has gathered an incredible ensemble of dancers, actors, and musicians who are steeped deeply in the craft of storytelling. It is the first time in his career that he directs an ensemble of artists from the Indian classical traditions.

Duration: Approximately 70 minutes without an intermission

World Premiere | Grand Théâtre de Provence- Aix en Provence – 30th August 2024

GIGENIS: The generation of the Earth is produced by Productions Sarfati. Presented thanks to the support of Orsolina28 Art Foundation and Muse Art Foundation. In co-production with Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, Singapore; Sadler’s Wells London; and The Joyce Theater with the support of its Stephen and Cathy Weinroth Fund for New Work.

WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY

AKRAM KHAN (Artistic Director/Choreographer/Dancer) is one of the most celebrated and respected dance artists of today. In just over 24 years he has created a body of work that has contributed significantly to the arts in the UK and abroad. His reputation has been built on the success of imaginative, highly accessible and relevant productions such as Jungle Book reimagined, Outwitting the Devil, XENOS, Until the Lions, Kaash, iTMOi (in the mind of igor), DESH, Vertical Road, Gnosis and zero degrees. As an instinctive and natural collaborator, Khan has been a magnet to world-class artists from other cultures and disciplines. His previous collaborators include the National Ballet of China, actress Juliette Binoche, ballerina Sylvie Guillem, choreographers/dancers Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Israel Galván, singer Kylie Minogue, indie rock band Florence and the Machine, visual artists Anish Kapoor, Antony Gormley and Tim Yip, writer Hanif Kureishi, and composers Steve Reich, Nitin Sawhney, Jocelyn Pook and Ben Frost.

Khan’s work is recognised as being profoundly moving, in which his intelligently crafted storytelling is effortlessly intimate and epic. Described by the Financial Times as an artist “who speaks tremendously of tremendous things”, a highlight of his career was the creation of a section of the London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony that was received with unanimous acclaim.

As a choreographer, Khan has developed a close collaboration with English National Ballet. He created the short piece Dust, part of the Lest We Forget programme, which led to an invitation to create his own critically acclaimed version of the iconic romantic ballet Giselle. Creature is Khan’s latest work for English National Ballet.

Khan has been the recipient of numerous awards throughout his career including two Laurence Olivier Awards, the Bessie Award (New York Dance and Performance Award), the prestigious ISPA (International Society for the Performing Arts) Distinguished Artist Award, the Fred and Adele Astaire Award, the Herald Archangel Award at the Edinburgh International Festival, the South Bank Sky Arts Award, and ten Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards for his company, AKC. He was awarded an MBE for services to dance in 2005. In 2022, Khan was announced as the new Chancellor of De Montfort University, and he is also an Honorary Graduate of Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, University of London as well as Roehampton and De Montfort Universities, and an Honorary Fellow of Trinity Laban and The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Khan is an Associate Artist of Sadler’s Wells and Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, London as well as Curve.

DIRECTOR'S NOTE

I feel humbled to be working with the Sarfati team in this new artistic chapter, where I will be sharing the stage alongside extraordinary Indian classical soloists from specific generations. GIGENIS is a profound tribute to that reflection, a reconciliation between the past and the present times, a genuine celebration of our collective love for dance — boundless, timeless, as well as deeply rooted. It is a work that comes out of an urgent personal response to the endangerment of tradition. Honouring the tradition of kathak, I am excited to be that storyteller once more, not through my body but through the bodies of the most prodigious current and future masters of classical Indian dance.

- Akram Khan, director of GIGENIS, the generation of the Earth

NOTE FROM VONY SARFATI

I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be involved in producing Akram Khan's next creation GIGENIS. After almost twenty years of collaboration with Akram, this is not only a tremendous honour but a deeply meaningful endeavour for me personally. I believe Akram Khan's innovative approach to dance makes him a visionary in the world of performing arts. For all our team at the Productions Sarfati contributing to the realisation of his vision is an extraordinary privilege. I am also thankful for the opportunity to work alongside such talented artists and somehow to play a role in bringing this creative endeavour to life as a celebration of the spirituality, richness, and diversity of Indian culture. I eagerly anticipate the journey ahead and the impact that this collaboration could have on audiences worldwide, bridging the gap between tradition and innovation, showcasing the beauty of Indian classical dance in a way that is both timeless and groundbreaking.

- Vony Sarfati, Producer

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION

The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for more than four decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 475 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (1st–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 300 performances for audiences of over 100,000. Visit Joyce.org for more information.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities. This acknowledgement demonstrates our institution’s commitment to the process of dismantling the legacies of colonialism and cultural imperialism.

We acknowledge the ongoing violence towards Indigenous people through systemic inequality. We pay our respect to the Indigenous peoples who lived and continue to live upon this land, and whose rich history, artistic practices, and spirituality are tied to this land. It is within our responsibility as a cultural institution and our commitment to diversity and inclusion to embody a commitment to Indigenous rights and cultural equity.

We sincerely invite you as an audience member to take a moment to reflect on the history and legacy of displacement, migration, and settlement.

It is our intention to work with local Native American arts councils to better inform our land acknowledgment practices and anticipate that it will evolve over time.
