Welcome to The Joyce Theater’s Spring/Summer ‘25 Season!
I am excited to kick off our season with the best of Argentinian dance and the works of two directors who share similar names but showcase vastly different styles. ANIMA ANIMAL, conceived by American Ballet Theater Principal Dancer, Herman Cornejo, draws inspiration from an Indigenous legend about a mystical bird from Argentina’s northeastern forests and reimagines an unfinished project by the legendary Vaslav Nijinsky. Then, evoking the fierce spirit of Buenos Aires, Germán Cornejo’s Tango After Dark follows, fusing the rich traditions of tango with a contemporary flair and performed by international tango superstars.
From Argentina to The Joyce’s own backyard, several revered New York City-based companies bring debuts for their hometown engagements. Gibney Company presents world premieres by Lucinda Childs and Peter Chu that demonstrate the breadth of the company’s work. Continuing to explore connection to and identity with Black and queer history and culture, A.I.M by Kyle Abraham stages new works by Princess Grace Award recipients Andrea Miller, Paul Singh, and Rena Butler, as well as Abraham’s latest work, his first collaboration with composer Shelley Washington. In its 45th year, Mark Morris Dance Group celebrates the wit and emotional depth of its founder’s beloved repertory, as well as its continued commitment to innovation with two world premiere works.
Returning to The Joyce stage, tap royalty Ayodele Casel premieres a new work that examines the transformative ties between tap dance and the dynamism of 90s Hip-Hop music. An audience favorite, Parsons Dance brings an exhilarating program of iconic David Parsons works, a world premiere by Rena Butler, and Robert Battle’s lauded The Hunt. Ballet Tech Kids Dance makes its annual Joyce appearance with classics by founder Eliot Feld and a new work by alumnus Edgar Peterson. With its world-renowned collection of dancers, singers, and musicians, Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca continues to showcase its mastery of flamenco and stretch the boundaries of the art form.
Celebrating contemporary dance from across the country and globe, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago showcases its versatile, bold artistry with works by Ohad Naharin and New York City premieres by FLOCK, HSDC Resident Artist Aszure Barton, and Johan Inger. Gauthier Dance resident dance company of Theaterhaus Stuttgart—brings an electrifying selection of contemporary works from some of today's most influential choreographers, including Sharon Eyal, Hofesh Shechter, Ohad Naharin, and Eric Gauthier himself. Highlighting the creative spirit of its Los Angeles home, BODYTRAFFIC explores the power of memory this season, with works created by Juel D. Lane, Trey McIntyre, and Matthew Neenan.
Legacy companies showcase the groundbreaking works of their founders this season, starting with Paul Taylor Dance Company, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Taylor’s masterwork Esplanade, as well as reconstructions of repertory works from the 1970s. The Trisha Brown Dance Company performs Brown’s “Unstable Molecular Structure” cycle, which introduces the iconic sensuous movement that still inspires dancemakers worldwide, along with a new commission by Australian choreographer Lee Serle.
Martha Graham Dance Company rings in its 99th year at The Joyce with electrifying psychodramas from the 1940s and '50s, alongside powerful works by Jamar Roberts and co-collaborator & musician Rhiannon Giddens, Hofesh Schecter, Xin Ying, Virginie Mécène, and Baye & Asa. Continuing to trace Graham’s influence, the physically daring Pilobolus offers its interpretation of Graham’s Lamentation, alongside repertory works that encapsulate the dancers’ exceptional athleticism and the company’s early visionary collaborations.
The Joyce’s Ballet Festival brings the season to a momentous close with a one-week celebration of the life and legacy of Jerome Robbins. Featuring curation and performances by New York City Ballet Principal Dancer Tiler Peck, this year’s festival showcases the timeless vitality and vision of Robbins’ choreography.
We’re honored to have these 17 engagements brought to life on our Chelsea stage this season. Thank you for joining us tonight!
Sincerely,
Linda Shelton

A colossal explosion in the universe sparks the birth of our planet Earth. Human life, inherently imperfect, unfolds in stages, each one striving to bring the soul closer to its ultimate purification and elevation—a process intricately linked to discovering the essence of the animal spirit within.
Guyra, an indigenous warrior, grapples with the complexities and anxieties of human imperfection. It is on this journey that he encounters Yvy, a woman of another tribe, and together they share a profound, transcendent love.
However, tragedy strikes as the Earth is consumed by a devastating flood, plunging communities into conflict and war.
Amid the chaos, Guyra, in a moment of confusion and desperation, injures a white man with an arrow—an act that inadvertently takes the life of his beloved Yvy.
In a poignant moment of transformation, Guyra metamorphoses into a bird, soaring into the darkness toward a celestial eternity.

ABOUT THE PIECE
"People do not think about stars and therefore do not understand the world."
(Nijinsky, Diaries)
When Nijinsky was once asked about the secret to his leaps, he replied that it was simple: you just had to jump and then pause up there. Stay suspended in the air.
Anima Animal is a similar feat—almost impossible—, namely the revival of a 20th-century initiative to create the first Argentine ballet, which was seemingly intended to have Nijinsky as its choreographer and lead performer. In recent years, more has been uncovered about this ballet project, Caaporá, a work with an Indigenous theme conceived by Ricardo Güiraldes and Alfredo González Garaño in 1915. Nijinsky would have become aware of the project when Les Ballets Russes performed for the second time at Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires in 1917. For various reasons, this project was never realized and remained in a state of eternal suspension in the dance history in Argentina.
Anima Animal, by Herman Cornejo and Anabella Tuliano, takes Caaporá as its starting point. The work dialogues with the history of local theatrical dance, without falling into the same approaches often used to address such themes in the early 20th century. While it evokes the original project and draws on the worldview of Indigenous peoples to critique the present, it seeks to shed exoticized interpretations and reimagines the mythical Guaraní universe in a contemporary light.
The relationship between the traditional and the contemporary is established not only through choreography, which merges the language of ballet with the contemporary dance style of Grupo Cadabra, but also through its musical composition. The score is a collaboration between Noelia Escalzo—a composer from Córdoba (Argentina) whose academic music integrates Argentine and Latin American folkloric rhythms and sounds— and Uji, an Argentine electronic music composer who works with a library
of natural sounds and ancestral traditions collected during his travels across South America.
This intimate collaboration of choreography, music, and visuals results in an organic, meticulously crafted work. Through the stylization of various folkloric elements, it reveals the rich cultural diversity of Argentina and the region, without falling into any particularism. In this pursuit, Anima Animal becomes universal, transcending its local origins to prompt us to rethink our connection as human beings to nature and its transformations. It allows us to pause, to suspend our everyday perception through an aesthetic experience that also invites reflection on the world we inhabit. In other words, it offers us the chance to take a pause among the stars.

He joined ABT Studio Company in 1998, became a soloist at the American Ballet Theatre in 2000, and was promoted to Principal Dancer in 2003. Celebrated for his authentic stage presence, Cornejo has received numerous honors, including the 2013 Bessie Award presented by the NY Dance & Performance League, UNESCO’s Messenger of Peace, the Benois de la Danse in 2014, and a 2022 Dance Magazine Award, among others.
Renowned for his versatility, he has performed the full classical repertoire in leading roles and collaborated with legendary choreographers such as Twyla Tharp, Mark Morris, Alexei Ratmansky, Christopher Wheeldon, Justin Peck, and Wayne McGregor. Cornejo has also choreographed for himself: Tango y Yo for the Dance Open Festival (2010), Two Sunsets for the ‘Dance Against Cancer’ event (2012), Transcendence in collaboration with bandoneonist JP Jofre for the Kings of the Dance Tour (2014), Dentro and Momentum with pianist Bruce Levingston for Trio ConcertDance, and Milongón (2016), in honor of Damian Woetzel’s first decade as director of the Vail International Dance Festival. In 2022, he created The Apartment to Piazzolla’s Suite del Angel, commissioned by The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Department of Live Arts as part of the Catalyst Quartet's 2022-2023 MetLiveArts residency.
In 2021, Cornejo received an NYU Center for Ballet and the Arts Fellowship for his project Reimagining Nijinsky, which became the foundation for ANIMA ANIMAL, his first work as both producer and dancer.
In 2024, the New York City Center commissioned Cornejo to create a new choreography of Fokine’s Specter of the Rose for their Fall for Dance season, honoring his legacy as the most featured male dancer in the history of the event. That year he also celebrated 25 years with ABT.
ANABELLA TULIANO (Choreographer/Costume Designer) is an acclaimed Argentine choreographer and contemporary dance teacher, known for her innovative approach. She founded Grupo Cadabra in 2011, establishing one of Argentina’s most influential independent dance companies. Her works, including Domesticame and Cadabra, earned recognition from the Teatro del Mundo Awards, while her teaching was honored with the María Ruanova Diploma of Honor in 2024. She has created and directed celebrated productions for Grupo Cadabra, such as No te duermas vencido (2014), which earned the María Guerrero Award in 2024, Idaki (2016), Lo que tenía que ser (2017), and Coraje (2021). These have been showcased on major stages like Teatro Maipo and Teatro del Bicentenario de San Juan, as well as international festivals. Her latest work, Anima Animal (2022), was recognized among the most outstanding choreographies in Argentina of the recent years.
Tuliano has choreographed for Teatro San Martín’s Contemporary Ballet, Buenos Aires Ballet, and worldly renowned dancers like ABT Principal Dancer Herman Cornejo. She has also served as a jury member for international dance competitions and mentored award-winning dancers in the Prix de Lausanne and Varna.
Educated at Berklee College in Boston, LUIS MAURETTE “UJI” (Music) is a sound researcher, a DJ, and sound engineer. He stands out as one of South America's most innovative electronic music producers, renowned for his genre-defying compositions. His captivating soundscapes blend indigenous and natural elements with modern dance music aesthetics, creating trance-inducing experiences. Drawing from his nomadic upbringing across the Americas, Uji has spent the last 17 years delving into South America's ancestral traditions as an ethnomusicologist and documentarian. His dynamic live performances have captivated audiences worldwide, with extensive tours across Europe, the United States, Asia, and Latin America.
Uji has graced prestigious festivals such as ADE in Amsterdam and Mutek Montreal. Uji's most recent work, TIMEBEING, explores the creation of new myths and symbolism in: a multi-platform conceptual album (ZZK Records); an eight-part short film (dir. Jazmin Calcarami); and an immersive live experience; acknowledging the need to embrace ritual technology to deepen connection in the physical, virtual, and spiritual realms.
NOELIA ESCALZO (Music) is a highly accomplished composer and conductor, who specializes in popular traditional music and folklore of Argentina. Escalzo won the TROMBONANZA 2014 International Composition Competition. She composed the first concerto for contra forte and symphony orchestra titled Tango Fantasy, commissioned by Maestro Lewis Lipnick of the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington. Escalzo's compositions have been acclaimed worldwide, with premieres across various countries by esteemed orchestras including the National Orchestra of Colombia, and Youth Orchestra of Mexico, among others. She has composed exclusive pieces for renowned international soloists such as Lewis Lipnick, James William, and Premysl Vojta. She lectures at universities in Europe and the United States on Latin American music.
CLIFTON TAYLOR (Lighting Designer) designs for opera, dance, and theater companies worldwide. His work has been seen on Broadway, and with companies ranging from Ailey, DTH, Tanowitz, Lubovitch, Armitage, and Paul Taylor to ballet companies from ABT, the Royal Ballet, Mikhailovsky in St. Petersburg, and companies in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro, Nancy, Florence, and more. ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION
The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for more than four decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 475 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (1st–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 300 performances for audiences of over 100,000. Visit Joyce.org for more information.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities. This acknowledgement demonstrates our institution’s commitment to the process of dismantling the legacies of colonialism and cultural imperialism.
We acknowledge the ongoing violence towards Indigenous people through systemic inequality. We pay our respect to the Indigenous peoples who lived and continue to live upon this land, and whose rich history, artistic practices, and spirituality are tied to this land. It is within our responsibility as a cultural institution and our commitment to diversity and inclusion to embody a commitment to Indigenous rights and cultural equity.
We sincerely invite you as an audience member to take a moment to reflect on the history and legacy of displacement, migration, and settlement.
It is our intention to work with local Native American arts councils to better inform our land acknowledgment practices and anticipate that it will evolve over time.
