HOMELAND
WORLD PREMIERE
Conceived by Dionne Figgins
Lighting by Aaron Copp
Set Design by Jessica Cancino
"Homeland" is a ballet in six parts that dances around the world and back again. We follow our graduates on their class trip, as they visit the continents of their ancestral origins and gain a new appreciation for their culture and the cultures of their classmates. This work is a reclamation and celebration of our cultural identities - an invitation and a challenge to embrace something new and unfamiliar as a means of uniting us as a global community.
Each section is choreographed by a “native speaker” of that dance genre.

ABOUT BALLET TECH FOUNDATION, INC.
MISSION AND ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND
Ballet Tech Foundation is committed to introducing New York City public school children to the beauty, integrity, and joy of dance. Annually, we provide the rigorous dance training necessary to fulfill and nurture students' intrinsic dance talents, tuition free. We develop dancers and leaders of tomorrow by offering young people, who reflect the rich diversity of our city, a world class dance education that encompasses a wide variety of genres of movement and choreography, alongside an academic education in collaboration with the NYC Department of Education. Since its founding in 1978 by choreographer Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech's programming has reached almost 943,000 children in 668 public elementary schools in NYC for its tuition-free ballet training program. Of those children, more than 27,000 have been invited to participate in Ballet Tech’s Introduction to Ballet classes. Students with a strong aptitude and enthusiasm for dance are invited to Ballet Tech’s full-time school where the 4th8th graders receive intensive tuition-free dance training at our studios at 890 Broadway, and since 1995, a strong academic education on site as well by the NYC Department of Education.
BALLET TECH ACROSS NEW YORK ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS
Through Ballet Tech Across New York (BTANY), Ballet Tech offers two new in-school enrichment programs to our partner schools: Dance for EveryBODY introduces students to the various dance techniques taught at Ballet Tech; and BT Ballet Basics introduces students to the basic tenets of ballet. These tuition-free programs, tailored for 2nd and 3rd grade, are intended for students of all abilities. Ballet Tech also provides open auditions at its studios at 890 Broadway throughout the year.
INTRODUCTION TO BALLET
Students participating in the tuition-free Enrichment programs that demonstrate an aptitude and enthusiasm for dance are invited to participate in the Introduction to Ballet program. The Intro students are bused by the NYC Department of Education from their local elementary schools to BT one morning a week for a 75-minute class for six weeks. Beginning the following fall, qualifying students from the Introduction to Ballet are invited to apply for full-time enrollment at the New York City Public School for Dance.
NEW YORK CITY PUBLIC SCHOOL FOR DANCE: GRADES 4-8
A joint venture with the NYC Department of Education, the NYC Public School for Dance (NYCPSD) provides an onsite academic curriculum integrated with intensive dance training at 890 Broadway. The DOE provides the academic faculty and curriculum; Ballet Tech Foundation provides the intensive dance training, dancewear, and transportation. The NYCPSD follows the public school calendar. In addition to Ballet Technique, the dance curriculum includes Allegro, Horton, Modern Techniques, Jazz, Contemporary, Pilates, Repertory, Tap, and Composition.
KIDS DANCE
Created in 1994, Kids Dance, BT’s annual season at The Joyce Theater, provides the students with the opportunity to learn choreography, develop performance skills, and learn about stagecraft. In preparation for The Joyce season, students learn ballets created especially for them by dance faculty members and guest artists.
IMPACT
Through the scaffolding approach to learning from the beginning classes to advanced, the five years of rigorous dance training serve as both the bedrock and springboard for the students’ future pursuits, whether in dance or another field. Ballet Tech tracks its graduates through their high school careers and beyond in order to provide support and guidance as alumni grow into their respective career paths. Ballet Tech is a community consisting of faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and donors. The entire community is united with the goal of ensuring that our students (the heart of our community), develop the values – creativity, discipline, perseverance, confidence, critical thinking, and courage – and skills necessary to become leaders of tomorrow.
Find out more about Ballet Tech at www.ballettech.org. If you would like to be on our mailing list, or are inspired to support Ballet Tech, please contact us at 890 Broadway, New York, NY 10003, (212) 777-7710, or at questions@ballettech.org.
ABOUT BALLET TECH FOUNDATION, INC.
BALLET TECH'S COMMISSIONING PROJECT
The Commissioning Project was begun by founder Eliot Feld, who described it as follows:
For aspiring piano students there are Bach’s two and three-part inventions sensibilities. With that model in mind, Ballet Tech has resolved to build a library of new choreography imagined for and designed on emerging dancers. This will be a repertory of original dances, dreamed up and composed by boffo dance makers, for fledgling dancers to hone their skills and whet their imaginations. And, of course, intended to delight the eye and enchant the fancy of audiences of all ages.
Our 2024 additions include Homeland (by Dionne Figgins), Dawning (by Karisma Jay and Men Ca), Facing East (by Kathy Xia), Northern Lights (by Brian Reeder), and Crossing (by Ximena Salgado).
The library includes works by Dionne Figgins, Men Ca, Brian Reeder, Robert LaFosse, Curtis Holland, Michael Snipe, John Heginbotham, Julia Eichten, Brian Brooks, Stephanie Terasaki, Conner Bormann, and Riley O’Flynn, Laura Careless, and Eliot Feld.

We would like to acknowledge the many public elementary schools located throughout New York City that are our partners. Without their cooperation, our programs would not be possible. We salute and thank you!
The Ballet Tech Across New York (BTANY) Dance Enrichment Program is our primary outreach program for NYC public schools. The BTANY program provides all participating students with an accessible and engaging dance enrichment class, allowing students of all different skill levels and capabilities to enjoy the beauty and joy of dance.
Students are also able to audition for Ballet Tech through our Open Audition process, held at Ballet Tech studios throughout the year.
If you or someone you know may be interested in booking the BTANY Dance Enrichment Program, please contact our Co-Administrative Director Janel Rayome at (212)777-7710 ext. 304 or jrayome@ballettech.org.
ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION
The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for more than four decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 475 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (1st–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 300 performances for audiences of over 100,000. Visit Joyce.org for more information.
FUNDERS
Many Thanks to The Joyce's Institutional Funders for Keeping Us Moving Forward
An abundance of gratitude to Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Representative Jerrold Nadler, and Representative Nydia M. Velázquez for their visionary leadership that established the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant program, which made the reopening of The Joyce Theater in 2021 and the reemergence of many dance companies possible.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION
VISION STATEMENT
The Joyce Theater Foundation is committed to fostering and supporting a diverse and inclusive environment, both on and off stage. We embrace and celebrate diversity in all its forms, and value the rich experiences and perspectives that arise from differences in race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, religion, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and cognitive and physical ability.
We strive to counteract the social injustices and racism that exist within our communities, our nation, and our world. Our aim as an organization is to embody the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.
To achieve this, we will:
• Create and implement proactive diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice initiatives;
• Establish and maintain a culture of safe sharing, intentional listening, learning, and growth;
• Engage with and support disenfranchised communities by sharing information and resources and ensuring accessibility;
• Develop metrics and conduct regular reviews of our programs and policies to hold ourselves accountable and shift as neededs.
With these goals in place and our Vision Statement in mind, we are dedicated to the continued learning and growth needed to foster an inclusive environment for all. This is an ongoing process and by nature will be an evolving statement.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities. This acknowledgement demonstrates our institution’s commitment to the process of dismantling the legacies of colonialism and cultural imperialism.
We acknowledge the ongoing violence towards Indigenous people through systemic inequality. We pay our respect to the Indigenous peoples who lived and continue to live upon this land, and whose rich history, artistic practices, and spirituality are tied to this land. It is within our responsibility as a cultural institution and our commitment to diversity and inclusion to embody a commitment to Indigenous rights and cultural equity.
We sincerely invite you as an audience member to take a moment to reflect on the history and legacy of displacement, migration, and settlement.
It is our intention to work with local Native American arts councils to better inform our land acknowledgment practices and anticipate that it will evolve over time.
