BATSHEVA DANCE COMPANY: HORA

FEBRUARY 28 - MARCH 12, 2023

Season Sponsor:

Welcome to The Joyce Theater’s Spring ‘23 season! Thirteen wide-ranging companies will grace the stage bringing the best of the dance world to New York audiences.

I am honored to have you in the theater as Tel Aviv-based Batsheva Dance Company kicks off the season with Ohad Naharin’s Hora, a work that exemplifies the company’s keen investigations of form and sensory experience.

Continuing to bring international dance center stage, New Zealand’s Atamira Dance Company celebrates its Joyce debut with Te Wheke, embedding Te Ao Māori principles through mesmerizing video design, soundscapes, and costuming. Classical Odissi dance from India and traditional Kandyan dance from Sri Lanka intermingle in Āhuti, performed by Nrityagram Dance Ensemble and Chitrasena Dance Company. Works by two South African choreographers take the stage, with Vuyani Dance Theatre presenting an encore performance of Gregory Vuyani Maqoma’s Cion: A Requiem of Ravel's Boléro. In The Sacrifice, Dada Masilo reimagines Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring'' by fusing Tswana dance with ballet and modern vocabulary.

Homegrown favorites return with dynamic programs of world premieres and classic works. A.I.M by Kyle Abraham offers Abraham’s latest creation, set to a Nina Simone soundtrack, next to works by Maleek Washington and Bebe Miller. Presenting Graham classics alongside an array of new choreographers, Martha Graham Dance Company showcases commissions by Hofesh Shechter, Annie Rigney, Baye & Aya, and Sonya Tayeh. Trisha Brown Dance Company pays homage to its founder’s collaborations with composer Alvin Curran, while staging its first choreographic commission by Cuban-born artist Judith Sánchez Ruíz.

Nurturing the development of contemporary choreographers, we welcome back Gibney Company, whose ambitious program features works by Tiffany Tregarthen & David Raymond, Johan Inger, and Yue Yin, and melds dance, design, and music. Celebrating its 15th anniversary, GALLIM expands its repertory with a new collaboration between founder Andrea Miller and “King of Krump” Brian “HallowDreamz” Henry.

This spring, audience favorites return, with Parsons Dance in two world premieres by David Parsons and a work by sought-after choreographer Rena Butler. For its annual Joyce season, Ballet Tech Kids Dance, under the leadership of new Artistic Director Dionne Figgins, returns with a rousing ode to American choreography and timeless works by Eliot Feld. With unmistakable energy, Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana carries forth the storied legacy of flamenco and percussive traditions in El Cuadragésimo.

Mark your calendars for a season full of dance! I hope you join us at The Joyce again soon.

Sincerely,

The Joyce Theater Foundation presents

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Batsheva Dance Company is a home for dancemakers collectively committed to ongoing research, passionate practice, and generous sharing. With Ohad Naharin as the Company’s House Choreographer, Batsheva and its dancers are dedicated to the adventurous exploration of new forms and ideas of our time.

HISTORY

The Batsheva Dance Company was founded in 1964 as a repertoire company by the Baroness Batsheva de Rothschild, who appointed Martha Graham as its artistic consultant. The company was the first troupe in the world, aside from Graham’s own company of course, to perform the dances of the legendary choreographer. In its first decades the company was led by various artistic directors from Israel and abroad. In 1990 Ohad Naharin was assigned to the role of Artistic Director and led the company into a new era. During his years as artistic director Naharin developed Gaga, a radical movement language which serves as the Company’s daily training, and is also offered worldwide to dancers and the wide public.

In 2018 Naharin stepped down as Artistic Director and continue to serve as the company's House Choreographer. Gili Navot served as Artistic Director in the years 2018-2022, and in July 2022 Dr. Lior Avizoor was assigned to the role and replaced Navot. Dina Aldor has been the company’s CEO since 2009. Thanks to the bold choreographic voice of Ohad Naharin and to the uncompromising quality of the company’s dancers, Batsheva Dance Company has been critically acclaimed and popularly embraced as one of the foremost contemporary dance companies in the world. Together with The Batsheva Ensemble, the Company boasts a roster of 40 dancers drawn from Israel and abroad. It is Israel’s largest dance company, maintaining an extensive performance schedule locally and internationally with over 250 performances and circa 100,000 spectators every year. Alongside its artistic activity, the company has considered the nurturing and training of young dancers and creators as part of its core mission and works tirelessly to promote dance education.

A NEW HOME FOR BATSHEVA

Since 1989 the company has been a resident at the Suzanne Dellal Center in Tel Aviv, where it has already become an international destination point. However, over the years the company and its activities has increasingly grown beyond the capacity of its current home, and the need for a theater of its own became essential. In a joint effort with the City of Tel Aviv-Yafo the company is establishing an Arts Campus at the historic Old Central Bus station in southern Tel Aviv, designed by world-renowned architect Sir David Adjaye OBE. The Campus is a paramount project which will finally provide Batsheva with a home of its own with state-of-the-art facilities, including a Dance Center, a 550-seat Main Theatre, and a Black Box, to showcase an international program across all disciplines for all audiences.

WHO'S WHO IN BATSHEVA DANCE COMPANY

OHAD NAHARIN (House Choreographer) was born in 1952 in Mizra, Israel. He joined Batsheva Dance Company in 1974. During his first year, guest choreographer Martha Graham invited him to join her own company in New York, where Naharin later made his choreographic debut in 1980. For the next decade, he presented works in New York and abroad. During those years he collaborated with Billy Siegenfeld, David Gordon, Gina Buntz, and Kakuzo Hirabayashi, to whom he is grateful to this day for their guidance and inspiration. At the same time, he worked with his first wife, Mari Kajiwara, and a group of dancers in New York. Naharin and Kajiwara continued to work together until she died from cancer in 2001. In 1990, Naharin was appointed Artistic Director of Batsheva Dance Company, and in the same year, he established the company’s junior division, Batsheva – the Young Ensemble.

In addition to his stagework, Naharin also developed GAGA, an innovative movement language based on research into heightening sensation and imagination, becoming aware of form, finding new movement habits, and going beyond familiar limits. GAGA is the daily training of Batsheva’s dancers and has spread globally among both dancers and non-dancers.

Under the pseudonym Maxim Waratt, he composed music for many pieces he created for the company. Naharin’s work has also been featured in several films including Tomer Heymann In Out of Focus (2007) and the Heymann's Brothers' Mr. Gaga (2015). A citizen of both Israel and the United States, Naharin currently lives in Israel with his wife, dancer and costume designer Eri Nakamura, and their daughter, Noga.

DR. LIOR AVIZOOR (Artistic Director) (1981) is a dancer, teacher, curator, and researcher. Upon graduating from the Thelma Yellin High School of Arts, she moved to Amsterdam where she completed a bachelor’s degree in dance at the Amsterdam University of the Arts, danced with independent choreographers, and taught for several years. With her return to Israel, she turned to research and theory and enrolled to the Tel Aviv University Faculty of the Arts, where she completed a master’s degree as well as a doctoral degree, dedicating her dissertation to dance ontology. Over the last decade, her work has focused on expanding the discourse and thought surrounding the art of dance, drawing connecting threads between dance and other cultural worlds. In 2019, she was invited by Ohad Naharin to take part in the foundation of the Batsheva Dance Company School and to serve as its director. In 2022 Avizoor took on the role of the Batsheva Dance Company artistic director.

DINA ALDOR (CEO) was born in 1957 in Jerusalem. She has been a cultural activist in Israel and abroad for over three decades. Amongst her activities, Dina worked with Lia van Leer in the establishment of the Jerusalem Cinematheque. For 20 years, Dina codirected Multi Media, which was then Israel’s leading production company. Reputed for its artistic audacity, Multi Media’s extensive work has brought the world’s leading companies and artists across the wide spectrum of the performing arts. Dina is active in various international cultural forums. Executive Director of Batsheva Dance Company since 2009.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION

The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for over three decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 400 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (K–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 340 performances for audiences in excess of 150,000 patrons. Visit Joyce.org for more information.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities. This acknowledgement demonstrates our institution’s commitment to the process of dismantling the legacies of colonialism and cultural imperialism.

We acknowledge the ongoing violence towards Indigenous people through systemic inequality. We pay our respect to the Indigenous peoples who lived and continue to live upon this land, and whose rich history, artistic practices, and spirituality are tied to this land. It is within our responsibility as a cultural institution and our commitment to diversity and inclusion to embody a commitment to Indigenous rights and cultural equity.

We sincerely invite you as an audience member to take a moment to reflect on the history and legacy of displacement, migration, and settlement.

It is our intention to work with local Native American arts councils to better inform our land acknowledgment practices and anticipate that it will evolve over time.
