ABOUT THE PROGRAM HANDGAME (1995) Handgame was choreographed in 1995 as part of Relentless, one of Ieremia’s earliest fulllength works which was based on child abuse. The creative process for this work began with company members sharing stories of abuse from their childhoods. Gesturing to parts of their bodies that were injured as children, Ieremia progressed this idea into a rhythmic piece, loosely utilizing aspects of fa’ataupati (Samoan slap dance).

Lighting Design: JAX Messenger Handgame has been reworked specially for this season at The Joyce Theater.

- INTERMISSION -

O LE OLAGA – LIFE New York Premiere

“As I watch my parents transform with age my appreciation for them and their journey through life grows. O Le Olaga - Life, is a tribute to my parents and ultimately a celebration of life. Like my parents I am a survivor from a place where cultures collide and it is through this lens that I am inspired to collect and reorganise elements of beauty, rhythm, and colour. Set to Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria in D Major, the dance is made from my memories influenced by the traditional beat of my parents beloved Samoa while navigating the tidal shifts of time and space. The beautiful explosion of colour and pattern in my mother’s dresses, the pride with which my father exposes his traditional tattoo that covers his skin from below his knees to his ribcage when he dances, the murmuring of their nightly prayers and the cracking of their combined voice as they lift their hearts in traditional hymns of praise. It is these and many other images that serve as creative inspiration.” – Neil Ieremia, ONZM

Music: Gloria by Antonio Vivaldi, performed by Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, Academy of Ancient Music & Sir Stephen Cleobury, Malu A’E Le Afiafi by The Five Stars Lighting Design: JAX Messenger Costume Design: Zambesi

ABOUT THE COMPANY Black Grace, New Zealand’s leading contemporary dance group. Motivated to provide a different perspective and a fresh voice in the dance scene, Neil Ieremia founded his own company, Black Grace, in 1995, with ten male dancers of Pacific, Māori, and New Zealand heritage. Drawing from his Samoan and New Zealand roots to create innovative dance works that reach across social, cultural, and generational barriers, Mr. Ieremia has changed the face of contemporary dance in New Zealand and turned Black Grace into one of the most recognizable and iconic cultural brands. His company tours the length and breadth of New Zealand developing new audiences and a new appreciation for dance. The work itself is highly physical, rich in the story telling traditions of the South Pacific and expressed with raw finesse, unique beauty and power. The Company features some of New Zealand’s finest dancers and has toured internationally to Australia, Canada, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Japan, Luxembourg, Scotland, Mexico, South Korea, Taiwan, and New Caledonia. In 2004, Black Grace made its US debut, performing a sold out season at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, with a subsequent return to the Festival in 2005. Since then, the Company has performed regularly throughout North America earning audience and critical acclaim. In 2009, Black Grace was presented with a resolution passed by the Guam Legislator in recognition of their work with local communities, and 2010 saw the Mayor of Honolulu officially proclaim the sixth February 2010 as “Black Grace Day.” Black Grace received a Herald Angel Award at the 2014 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY NEIL IEREMIA (Founding Artistic Director/Choreographer) is one of New Zealand’s most accomplished choreographers, a creative entrepreneur, and inspirational leader. Born in Wellington and of Samoan heritage, Mr Ieremia was raised in a tough working class neighbourhood in a country focused more on sporting prowess and agriculture rather than creative expression. At the age of nineteen and with no formal training, Mr. Ieremia resigned from his banking job, left home, enrolled in a full time dance programme and broke his parents’ hearts. As a freelance professional dancer, Mr. Ieremia worked with many leading New Zealand choreographers as well as creating a number of commissioned works before founding Black Grace in 1995. Numerous ‘firsts’ for a New Zealand choreographer include sell-out performances at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival (USA debut 2004 and 2005), a four-week season on New York City’s 42nd Street, performances at the renowned Cervantino Festival in Mexico, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and the 2010 Cultural Olympiad in Vancouver. Among his many other achievements, Mr. Ieremia has received a 2005 Arts Foundation of New Zealand Laureate Award, and the 2009 Paul D. Fleck Fellowship in the Arts from The Banff Centre, Canada. In 2015, Mr. Ieremia received a City of Porirua Anniversary Award and the Senior Pacific Artist Award from Creative New Zealand. ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for over three decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 400 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (K–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 340 performances for audiences in excess of 150,000 patrons. Visit Joyce.org for more information.

FUNDERS Many Thanks to The Joyce's Institutional Funders for Keeping Us Moving Forward An abundance of gratitude to Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Representative Jerrold Nadler, and Representative Nydia M. Velázquez for their visionary leadership that established the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant program, which has helped make the reopening of The Joyce Theater and the reemergence of many dance companies possible.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION VISION STATEMENT

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The Joyce Theater Foundation is committed to fostering and supporting a diverse and inclusive environment, both on and off stage. We embrace and celebrate diversity in all its forms, and value the rich experiences and perspectives that arise from differences in race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, religion, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and cognitive and physical ability.

The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities. This acknowledgement demonstrates our institution’s commitment to the process of dismantling the legacies of colonialism and cultural imperialism.

We strive to counteract the social injustices and racism that exist within our communities, our nation, and our world. Our aim as an organization is to embody the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. To achieve this, we will:

We acknowledge the ongoing violence towards Indigenous people through systemic inequality. We pay our respect to the Indigenous peoples who lived and continue to live upon this land, and whose rich history, artistic practices, and spirituality are tied to this land. It is within our responsibility as a cultural institution and our commitment to diversity and inclusion to embody a commitment to Indigenous rights and cultural equity.

• Create and implement proactive diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice initiatives; • Establish and maintain a culture of safe sharing, intentional listening, learning, and growth; • Engage with and support disenfranchised communities by sharing information and resources and ensuring accessibility; • Develop metrics and conduct regular reviews of our programs and policies to hold ourselves accountable and shift as neededs.

We sincerely invite you as an audience member to take a moment to reflect on the history and legacy of displacement, migration, and settlement. It is our intention to work with local Native American arts councils to better inform our land acknowledgment practices and anticipate that it will evolve over time.

With these goals in place and our Vision Statement in mind, we are dedicated to the continued learning and growth needed to foster an inclusive environment for all. This is an ongoing process and by nature will be an evolving statement.
