DIRECTOR'S NOTE
This piece is about right now - the summer of 2024. It is about the heat on the planet, it is about 14,000 dead children. This piece is about fascism coming to power, and it is about holding onto truth. It’s about the sounds of terror. It’s about a joyful noise. It is about people who lie and how those lies define and divide us. It is about radical care. It’s about feeling hated. It’s about falling in love. It is about distraction as a tool of subversion. It is about standing up for each other. It is about choosing to help.
This piece is about what our teachers taught us. It is about keeping community as a form of resistance. It is about how together, we can shift the frequency.
- Michelle Dorrance

STERLING HARRIS (Dancer), a Chicago native, holds a B.A. in Neuroscience from Northwestern University but is grateful to be able to pursue his passion for tap dance. He is an Artistic Associate of Chicago Tap Theatre, a Company Member of MADD Rhythms, a guest artist with Music From The Sole, and began the honor of performing with Dorrance Dance in Spring 2023. ADDI LOVING (Dancer), New-York based, is a rising artist in the world of performing arts. Hailing from North Carolina and St. Louis, she trained under Gene Medler in North Carolina, and her talent beamed through her involvement in MUNY St. Louis. A YoungArts winner in 2019 and attendee at Jacob's Pillow, her passion is evident through her performances. With a bright future ahead, Addi is more than thankful every time she joins Dorrance Dance on the stage.
CLAUDIA RAHARDJANOTO (Dancer), born and raised in Berlin, Germany, Claudia started her professional dance career at the Deutsche Open Berlin. At 15, she fell in love with tap dance under the tutelage of Sven Göttlicher and Marie-Christin Zeisset and moved to NYC in 2003 to pursue a career in tap dance. She hopes to continue to share her love and passion for music and the art of tap dance through her teaching and performing worldwide.
LEONARDO SANDOVAL (Dancer), Brazilian tap dancer and choreographer, is renowned for blending America’s great tap tradition with Brazil’s rich rhythmic and musical heritage. A true dancer-musician, he is one of Dance Magazine’s “25 To Watch” for 2021 and the recipient of a 2022 Vilcek Foundation Prize for Creative Promise. In 2015, with composer Gregory Richardson, he founded Music From The Sole, a tap dance and live music company that has appeared at venues like Jacob’s Pillow, Lincoln Center, The Yard, and Works & Process at the Guggenheim. He has been a core member of Dorrance Dance since 2014.
KATHY KAUFMANN (Lighting Designer), a New York City native, has been happily designing for Dorrance Dance since its inception (SOUNDspace, The Blues Project, ETM, Myelination). A resident designer at Danspace Project whose work has been seen throughout the US, Canada, Europe, and Asia, she also teaches at Sarah Lawrence. In 2018, he graduated from the Professional Tap Dance Program at Escola Luthier in Barcelona, and in 2023, he attended the prestigious Jacob’s Pillow School. Today, Gaëtan is a sought-after dancer for various projects and companies across Europe. Since 2021, he has been a member of the SEBASTIAN WEBER DANCE COMPANY in Germany. It is an absolute honor and a dream come true for him to learn from Michelle Dorrance and to dance as an understudy in her company, Dorrance Dance.
EMIKO NAKAGAWA (Understudy) is a Japanese tap dance artist currently based in NYC. She went on to further develop her tap artistry with Yukiko "Smilie" Misumi's mentorship, and she served as dance captain on various stages, including ARTN Company's solo "Legends of Tap" series 2015-2020 in Japan. Before coming to NY, she achieved international recognition through performing at “JUBA!” at Chicago Tap Festival and Big Apple Tap Festival, and as well as winning contests. Emiko is an alumnus of The School at Jacob's Pillow 2023 and is deeply grateful to be an understudy for Dorrance Dance.
ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION
The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for more than four decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 475 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (1st–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 300 performances for audiences of over 100,000. Visit Joyce.org for more information.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities. This acknowledgement demonstrates our institution’s commitment to the process of dismantling the legacies of colonialism and cultural imperialism.
We acknowledge the ongoing violence towards Indigenous people through systemic inequality. We pay our respect to the Indigenous peoples who lived and continue to live upon this land, and whose rich history, artistic practices, and spirituality are tied to this land. It is within our responsibility as a cultural institution and our commitment to diversity and inclusion to embody a commitment to Indigenous rights and cultural equity.
We sincerely invite you as an audience member to take a moment to reflect on the history and legacy of displacement, migration, and settlement.
It is our intention to work with local Native American arts councils to better inform our land acknowledgment practices and anticipate that it will evolve over time.
