ABOUT THE PROGRAM Over the past 35 years, the work of Tokyo-based company Sankai Juku has become known worldwide for its elegance, refinement, technical precision, and emotional depth. Founder Ushio Amagatsu’s contemporary Butoh creations are sublime visual spectacles and deeply moving theatrical experiences. He is one of the premiere choreographers at work in the world today. Created in 2022, KŌSA consists of excerpts from pieces of Sankai Juku’s repertoire that have been reimagined to constitute a work in its own right. Amagatsu has built this new eveninglength work in an effort to present the most essential elements of his vision: “By using no decor, only pure dance and the philosophical perception of images, I tried to bring everyone into my universe with as much curiosity as that which inhabited us at the first creation.”

ABOUT SANKAI JUKU Sankai Juku is a Butoh dance company founded by Ushio Amagatsu in 1975. The company has premiered a new piece approximately once every two years at Théâtre de la Ville in Paris, a center for contemporary dance. Sankai Juku is one of the few dance companies that Théâtre de la Ville has commissioned continuously for 35 years. Artistic Director Ushio Amagatsu trained in both classical and modern dance before becoming immersed in Butoh. For Amagatsu, Butoh expresses the language of the body. In the 1970s, Amagatsu drew mostly on his own individual experience for inspiration. During the 1980s, he spent most of his time in Europe and the inspiration for his work became more universal. In his works, Amagatsu presents an abstract vision of the infinite and explores evolutionary movement. He examines the relationship of the body to gravity and the relationship between gravity, the earth, and the environment. The company has toured internationally since 1980 and performed in over 700 cities in 48 countries throughout Europe, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas. They have been highly praised in different cultures for over 35 years, a testament to the universal nature of Sankai Juku’s work. While crossing over geographic borders and appealing to diverse audiences, the company develops the themes of their work while searching for and moving towards new realms. Sankai Juku received the Japan Foundation Award in 2013.

ABOUT POMEGRANATE ARTS Since 1998, Pomegranate Arts has worked in close collaboration with a small group of contemporary artists and arts institutions to bring bold and ambitious artistic ideas to fruition. WHO'S WHO IN SANKAI JUKU USHIO AMAGATSU (Artistic Director, Choreography, Design) was born in Yokosuka, Japan in 1949 and founded Butoh company Sankai Juku in 1975. He created Amagatsu Sho (1977), Kinkan Shonen (1978), and Sholiba (1979) before the first world tour in 1980. Since 1981 (the year he created Bakki), the Festival d'Avignon (Avignon, France) and Théâtre de la Ville (Paris, France) have been his places for creation and work. He has created 16 pieces co-produced with Théâtre de la Ville since 1982. Amagatsu also works independently outside Sankai Juku. In 1988, he created Fushi at the invitation of Jacob's Pillow, with music by Philip Glass. In 1989, he was appointed Artistic Director of the Spiral Hall in Tokyo, where he directed Apocalypse (1989) and Fifth-V (1990). In February 1997, he directed the opera Bluebeard's Castle by Bartok, conducted by Peter Eötvos, at the Tokyo International Forum. In March 1998, at Opéra National de Lyon, France, he directed Peter Eötvos's opera Three Sisters, which received the Prix du Syndicat National de la Critique of France. Three Sisters was seen in the 2001-2002 season at Théâtre du Chatelet in Paris, Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, Opéra National de Lyon, and Wiener Festwochen 2002 in Austria. In March 2008, Amagatsu directed Lady Sarashina, Peter Eötvos’s new opera at Opéra National de Lyon. Lady Sarashina, again, received the Prix du Syndicat National de la Critique of France. The work was seen at Opera Comique in February 2009 and Teatr Wielki - Polish National Opera in April 2013. Amagatsu has presided on the jury of the International Choreographic Competition of the National Academy of Dance, Italy (2011), the jury of the Toyota Choreography Award (2002 – 2005), and the jury of the International Meeting of Dance of Bagnolet (1992). Awards and merits given include: Commandeur de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Cultural Ministry (2014), the PurpleRibbon Medal by the Japanese government (2011), the Geijyutsu Sensho Prize (Art Encouragement Prize) from the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (2004), and the Chevalier de l'ordre des Arts et des Letters by French Cultural Ministry (1992). HIBIKI received a Laurence Olivier Award in category of Best New Dance Production (2002). Books include Ushio Amagatsu, Des rivages d'enfance au bûto de Sankai Juku (biography dictated by Kyoko Iwaki, Actes Sud, 2013, France) and Dialogue avec la gravité (published by Actes Sud, 2000, France and Iwanami Shoten, 2015, Japan). SEMIMARU (Assistant Director), a founding member of Sankai Juku, has participated in all Sankai Juku activities since its founding in 1975. In 1985, he began his solo career, often performing outside of the theater, and in 1990, he launched Kokutoin. The group continues to gather dancers for each performance and continues to create works. From 1987 to 1996, he held dance workshops every summer, and since 1999, he has established an atelier in the Kurobe River basin in Toyama Prefecture, where he holds the training camps and performances every summer, continuing to teach young dancers. Generally, he performs outdoors and creates works that are appropriate to the location, calling it "dialogue with the magnetic field," and likes to observe the connection between the space, the body, and the spirit.

A HISTORY OF BUTOH DANCE Written by Kelsey Carman, Stanford Live

Starting in late 1950s and early 1960s Japan, butoh emerged as an avant-garde dance style whose creation can be credited to Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ôno. The form, with its characteristic intensity, was influenced by the emergence of postmodernism and the atomic bombings of Japan. Since then, butoh has spread across the globe. During the early 1960s there were two major types of dance forms performed in Japan: traditional Japanese dance (kagura, buyō, and bugaku) and Western dance (classical ballet and modern dance). Butoh performances sought to depart from the aesthetics and the structured forms of Western dance. The early development of modern dance inspired the first butoh dancers to experiment with the idea of creative interactions between form and the spirit of their era. Artists sought new ways to create a dance that would strengthen their country’s culture and focus on the issues and contradictions of the times. Butoh breaks from the more traditional forms of Japanese performances by using intense, playful, or grotesque imagery to explore taboo topics. It is traditionally performed in white body makeup with slow, hyper-controlled motion. It embraces themes of death, disease, and mental illness. Dancers frequently appear weakened, emulating dead bodies, with spines bowed and feet shaking. Two key artists played a pivotal role in the art form’s development. Kazuo Ôno has been described as the “soul of butoh.” He began studying modern dance in 1933 with Baku Ishii, and used his dancing to express intense moods and feelings. In 1954 he began working with Tatsumi Hijikata on a performance called The Old Man and the Sea based on an adaptation of the Hemingway novel by Nobuo Ikemiya. From this performance forward, he began experimenting with new dance techniques to explore the soul and took the first steps toward what would expand into the butoh form.

Building on Ôno’s foundation, Tatsumi Hijikata expanded the awareness of butoh through his work and his story. He loved to break with convention and turn the accepted ideas of what dance was upside-down. His fire and energy were electric and many musicians, poets, artists, and activists were drawn to him. He forged the concept of Ankoku Butoh (Dance of Darkness) over the course of several years through artistic experimentation and introspection. One of the first recorded butoh pieces, Hijikata’s Forbidden Colors, premiered at a dance festival in 1959. Based on Yukio Mishima’s novel of the same name, the performance explored the theme of homosexuality and resulted in considerable uproar from the audience. Several members of the Japanese Dance Association threatened to resign should similar pieces be presented in the future. However, this did not deter the artists devoted to butoh and helped cement Hijikata’s position as a formidable creative force. Starting in the 1980s, butoh experienced a renaissance as butoh groups began performing outside Japan for the first time, including Sankai Juku.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for more than four decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 475 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (1st–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 300 performances for audiences of over 100,000. Visit Joyce.org for more information.

FUNDERS Many Thanks to The Joyce's Institutional Funders for Keeping Us Moving Forward An abundance of gratitude to Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Representative Jerrold Nadler, and Representative Nydia M. Velázquez for their visionary leadership that established the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant program, which made the reopening of The Joyce Theater in 2021 and the reemergence of many dance companies possible.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION VISION STATEMENT

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The Joyce Theater Foundation is committed to fostering and supporting a diverse and inclusive environment, both on and off stage. We embrace and celebrate diversity in all its forms, and value the rich experiences and perspectives that arise from differences in race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, religion, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and cognitive and physical ability.

The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities. This acknowledgement demonstrates our institution’s commitment to the process of dismantling the legacies of colonialism and cultural imperialism.

We strive to counteract the social injustices and racism that exist within our communities, our nation, and our world. Our aim as an organization is to embody the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. To achieve this, we will:

We acknowledge the ongoing violence towards Indigenous people through systemic inequality. We pay our respect to the Indigenous peoples who lived and continue to live upon this land, and whose rich history, artistic practices, and spirituality are tied to this land. It is within our responsibility as a cultural institution and our commitment to diversity and inclusion to embody a commitment to Indigenous rights and cultural equity.

• Create and implement proactive diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice initiatives; • Establish and maintain a culture of safe sharing, intentional listening, learning, and growth; • Engage with and support disenfranchised communities by sharing information and resources and ensuring accessibility; • Develop metrics and conduct regular reviews of our programs and policies to hold ourselves accountable and shift as neededs.

We sincerely invite you as an audience member to take a moment to reflect on the history and legacy of displacement, migration, and settlement. It is our intention to work with local Native American arts councils to better inform our land acknowledgment practices and anticipate that it will evolve over time.

With these goals in place and our Vision Statement in mind, we are dedicated to the continued learning and growth needed to foster an inclusive environment for all. This is an ongoing process and by nature will be an evolving statement.
