ABOUT THE PROGRAM B E H I N D T H E S O U T H : DA N C E S F O R M A N U E L Behind the South: Dances for Manuel (Detrás del Sur: Danzas para Manuel), is a tribute to the distinguished Colombian writer Manuel Zapata Olivella’s most acclaimed work Changó, el Gran Putas (Changó, the big badass), documenting the African Diaspora to the American continents. Behind the South: Dances for Manuel is composed of five acts, following the structure of Zapata’s novel. Through choreography and dramaturgy, the performance references omens, miraculous births, rebellion, and liberation, the pain of the mass abductions and the effort to maintain connection with the motherland of Africa. During the Middle Passage, the enslaved men and women are accompanied by their ancestors, the dead, and the orishas: Yemayá, Elegua, and Changó (Changó is the son of Yemayá, the mother goddess, protector of birth in the Yoruba tradition and religion). Behind the South: Dances for Manuel celebrates the vital force of the muntu (the chosen African people) and their use of the dancing body and music in ritual as a means of survival in the Americas. Behind the South: Dances for Manuel (60 minutes, no intermission) premiered in May 2021 as a co-production with the Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo in Bogotá.

ABOUT SANKOFA DANZAFRO We dance to be heard, not to be seen! In Akan, a Ghanaian language, Sankofa means "to return to the root." More than a word, it is an African philosophy that proposes to know the past as a condition to understand the present; as a way to see the future. This thought has guided the path of the Afro-Colombian dance and music company Sankofa Danzafro. Founded by Rafael Palacios in 1997 with its home in Medellín, Colombia, Sankofa Danzafro is dedicated to training and creation in dance as well as interacting with the community. Through the practice of dance, Sankofa’s mission is to bridge the gaps between the many African diaspora communities in Colombia – along with other populations whose human rights have be violated. Sankofa’s choreographic language searches for the poetics that are at the root of Afro dance, experienced through the frame of today. In this way, Sankofa honors both the traditional and the contemporary. Through its programs, the company nurtures community mentorship, social awareness, personal growth, and supports the sustainability of local cultures inside of the national dynamics of Colombia. Sankofa Danzafro made its "electrifying New York debut" (NY Times) in the US invited by the Battery Dance Festival in 2015. The company was first presented at The Joyce Theater in October, 2018. In North America, it has been presented by USC’s Voices & Visions; the Kravis Center; Boston’s Celebrity Series; and the Hopkins Center at Dartmouth, among others. The current tour includes the company’s debut in Montreal with performances presented by Danse Danse before a five-week tour in Europe with performances in Paris and Barcelona, among other cities. This engagement marks Sankofa’s third season at The Joyce Theater.
LET’S STAY IN TOUCH Thank you for joining us at tonight's performance. Keep up with the company at sankofadanzafro.org or scan the QR Code below to follow us on Instagram!

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for more than four decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 475 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (1st–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 300 performances for audiences of over 100,000. Visit Joyce.org for more information.
FUNDERS Many Thanks to The Joyce's Institutional Funders for Keeping Us Moving Forward An abundance of gratitude to Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Representative Jerrold Nadler, and Representative Nydia M. Velázquez for their visionary leadership that established the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant program, which made the reopening of The Joyce Theater in 2021 and the reemergence of many dance companies possible.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION VISION STATEMENT
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The Joyce Theater Foundation is committed to fostering and supporting a diverse and inclusive environment, both on and off stage. We embrace and celebrate diversity in all its forms, and value the rich experiences and perspectives that arise from differences in race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, religion, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and cognitive and physical ability.
The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities. This acknowledgement demonstrates our institution’s commitment to the process of dismantling the legacies of colonialism and cultural imperialism.
We strive to counteract the social injustices and racism that exist within our communities, our nation, and our world. Our aim as an organization is to embody the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. To achieve this, we will: • Create and implement proactive diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice initiatives; • Establish and maintain a culture of safe sharing, intentional listening, learning, and growth;
We acknowledge the ongoing violence towards Indigenous people through systemic inequality. We pay our respect to the Indigenous peoples who lived and continue to live upon this land, and whose rich history, artistic practices, and spirituality are tied to this land. It is within our responsibility as a cultural institution and our commitment to diversity and inclusion to embody a commitment to Indigenous rights and cultural equity.
• Engage with and support disenfranchised communities by sharing information and resources and ensuring accessibility;
We sincerely invite you as an audience member to take a moment to reflect on the history and legacy of displacement, migration, and settlement.
• Develop metrics and conduct regular reviews of our programs and policies to hold ourselves accountable and shift as neededs.
It is our intention to work with local Native American arts councils to better inform our land acknowledgment practices and anticipate that it will evolve over time.
With these goals in place and our Vision Statement in mind, we are dedicated to the continued learning and growth needed to foster an inclusive environment for all. This is an ongoing process and by nature will be an evolving statement.
