GIVE: Reuse - Reduce - Recycle

Page 1

Every June … UCSB students move out … leaving tons of furniture, clothing, kitchenware, bicycles … and so much more …

GIVE turns trash into treasure, rescuing tons of useable items from the landfill.

In 1990, a new mindset became a community project. prior to that ... the annual student move-out was marked by dumpster fires ... mountains of student cast-offs ... waste overwhelming the landfill.

In 1990, Catherine Boyer, Isla Vista/ UCSB Liaison, Student Affairs, recalls working with Santa Barbara County's long-range planning program to solve the environmental hazards of waste and landfill usage.

From that planning, and with support from the University, students, local sponsors and volunteers, came the:

Great Isla Vista Extravaganza … now known simply as

Today, thirty-three years later, the program of gathering, selling, and recycling the no longer needed furniture, household items, clothing, and bicycles, has become an integral part of the community.

Tons of useable items offer needed products to area residents, keeping them out of the landfill, as well as over a ton of non-perishable food to be distributed by the UCSB Associated Students Food Bank.

Where does the money go?

One of the more unique aspects of GIVE is how sales receipts are handled.

Each GIVE volunteer selects an Isla Vista non-profit that they want to support. Their hours are used to determine what percentage of the proceeds from the sale go to each local non-profit.
