Why create a Heart Book?

There are many reasons, most are similar to why you take photos:

to capture memories, explore the world, and leave a legacy.

While people of all ages make Heart Books,

they are particularly popular as people retire

and have more time available for projects …

and recognize that there is less time

left for un nished business.

In a memorable TED talk, EMT Matthew O’Reilly of Long Island talks about the three pieces of unfinished business most people have towards the end of their lives. https://www.ted.com/talks/matthew_o_reilly_am_i_dying_the_honest_answer 1. They have regrets and want to be forgiven. 2. They fear they’ll be forgotten and hope they’ll be remembered. 3. They want to know that their life had meaning. Heart Books provide a way to be remembered through memorializing meaningful moments of your life.

Creating a Heart Book: the process start

1. PLAN Story/Subject

2. PREPARE Make Pages

• • • • •

When you think about all your photos, do you feel delight … or guilt? Most of us feel GUILT!

1. Plan — Organize Photos Most common forms of photo storage: Phone Boxes

Note: these forms are hard to share and none of them are completely safe! Albums

Heart Book Guide

1. Plan — Organize Photos - Get rid of guilt! Step 1 - Play “Sort & Toss” Good photographers claim only 2-10% of their photos are “keepers.” They discard the rest.

Identify & Digitize Keepers — toss the rest. Sort & Toss Every time you upload photos, eliminate anything that doesn’t t your de nition of a keeper.

Sort into keeper categories:

• • • • • • •

Years or Eras Family & Friends Travel Events & Milestones Pets Hobbies And so on

Kristy Holch, consumer technology analyst, says, ”Bad photos are just clutter that makes it harder to nd the good ones."

1. Plan — Organize Photos - Get rid of guilt! Step 2 - Bring all photos into ONE digital, backed-up environment ALL of your photos should be on your computer (whether it’s PC or MAC) and backed up to iCloud, Dropbox, Google Photos or other backup system.

You can also use external hardrives but I’ve never been comfortable relying on them.

Losing your photos would be heartbreaking!!!

Your Computer PC (Folders or other software.)

***Be sure to record your password where you can nd it.

1. Plan — Organize Photos - Get rid of guilt! Step 3 - Create Folders and Albums Most photos are shot in batches … at events, while traveling, or visiting with family & friends. Think of these batches as albums within folders of months & years. *** Common organization format: Year, month, batch *** Examples: Folders 2019

2020

Albums

07 July

Beach vacation Joni wedding Garden remodel

09 Sept

Back to school Jim’s retirement Labor Day party

01 Jan

Evan’s birth Snow storm Ginny’s visit

While you don’t really need 01 and Jan, it makes it readily visible and alphabetizes properly. (Without the 01, the system confuses 1 and 10.)

Heart Book Guide

1. Plan — Organize Photos - Get rid of guilt! Step 3 - Tag common themes Tags are a powerful way to nd photos across batches (albums). Most systems allow you to have as many tags as you want. That’s a plus and a minus. Common tags: • People names • Places • Pets • Hobbies • Favorite subjects

Pitfalls: • Misspellings • Singular/plurals • Similar tags • Too many tags

*** Try to be consistent: It will make your searches easier. *** For instance … if you vacationed in Hawaii three di erent times, You might have three albums all named Hawaii … One in folder 2018 11 Nov One in folder 2019 02 Feb and one in folder 2020 01 Jan However, you visited Kauai twice, Maui all three times, and Honolulu once. If you created (and used) tags for Kauai, Maui, and Honolulu, it would make nding those speci c photos much easier.

Ted Takes is the 6th Heart Book created by Ted Coulson and given to friends and family.

Ted describes his process of creating this book:

“One of the fun challenges is selecting the images that will make the nal cut.”

He started out with over 5,000 photos, deemed 802 of them “keepers”

and 86 of them wound up in the book.

“I print those images in black and white and play with them until I’m satis ed

the story of the year’s adventures has been told.”

Be YOU! Ted has an engaging sense of

humor and he lets it show in his book …

here he is having a discussion with himself.

Design notes: Ted is a photographer so he gives lots of space to his photos:

only one or two pictures per page.

Pages are numbered.

Minimal background design gives energy and consistency

without distracting from photos.

Several shots bleed across two pages, giving them more drama.

Costco Photo Center

Theme: poem & trees

8” x 8”

Softcover

Created by Joyce Wyco for friends and family. I wanted to honor trees and share a poem.

Each of the odd-numbered pages contains a stanza of the poem

and all the images are related to trees from various locations.

Because it isn’t obvious that the words on each page are part of a poem,

the last page shows the entire poem.

The book was given to friends and family as a

Solstice present.

Design Notes: Images on each two-page spread are related in theme or in color.

Layout is one image per page with two panorama shots bleeding across

the 2-page spread.

Black background to give drama to photos, location text beneath

each image and several tree-related quotes added on even-numbered

pages for content depth.

First page dedication.
