RobertMuller’sroleasa peacebuildergrew organicallyfromhis deeprootsinthegeographyof WorldWarII.

AlthoughborninBelgium,he grewupintheAlsace-Lorraine regioninFrancesurroundedby warcombatantsFranceand Germany.Earlyonhebecame awareoftheartificial differencescreatedbyborders ashelearnedthathis grandparentshadbeenFrench, German,French,Germanand Frenchagain...allwithout leavingtheirvillage.

Lookingbackatfamily albums,hesawdifferent generationsofhisfamily dressedinthesoldier’s uniformsofdifferentnations. Hebegantodreamofcreating

WhatanhonortoshareRobertMullerwithyou. For17yearsItraveledwithhimashusband andwife,livinginCostaRica,SantaBarbara andNewYork.Thoseyearsshowedmethatavisionis whatdrivesus.Hisvisionforaworldatpeaceneverleft himashewrote7500ideasforabetterworld,spokeat conferencesandwasnominatedfortheNoblePeace Prize23times.

Ihavealwayswantedtomakeadifferenceintheworld. Maybeitwasbecauseasalittlegirl,myHungarian grandfathertoldmethatIwasgoingtobeapeacemaker. Itwasn’tuntilImetRobertMullermanyyearslaterthat Grandpa’svisionbecameatruereality.

WhenImetRobert,itwaslikehecouldreadmyheart. Hesawmyyearningtocreateabetterworld,and,more importantly,hesawmypotential.Thistirelessadvocate forpeaceknewwhoIwasandprovidedmewithasense ofpossibility.Itwaslikeheunlockedallofthedreams andwisdomIhadbeenaccumulatingthroughoutmylife.

I’vealwaysknownIcoulddowhateverIwantedtodo.I believedinmydestiny,yetIlongedforadeeper connectiontopeace.Robertprovidedmewiththatpath andmyworkforpeacecontinuestothisday.Thankyou dearRobertMuller.HowIlovedourlifetogether.

Robertsawthehorrorsofwarandtoldhisfather“I’m goingtobeapeacemaker.”Inthefollowingpages,we revealtheRobertIknewandloved,aswellashis greatestlessonslearnedfromalifetimededicatedto globalpeace.Robertpassionatelypersevered,often behindthescenesandwithoutglory.Happinesswasthe resultwhichwespreadwhereverwewere.

Ata1992boardmeeting fortheLaCasade Mariaretreatcenter,I posedthequestion"Wheredo worldleadersgoforrenewal?"

Ihadlongwatchedthe serenityoftheLaCasacampus andtheprogramsweoffered bringrenewaltoourguests.I wonderedwhatmighthappenif weconvenedagatheringof leadersrighthereinSanta Barbara?

Thatledtotheideaofhosting ahigh-levelinvitational“World LeadersRetreat”andoneof theinviteeswasDr.Robert Muller,formerUnitedNations AssistantSecretaryGeneral andnowChancellorofthe UniversityforPeaceinCosta Rica.

Thatcaughtmy attention.Notonly wouldheattend,but hewouldattendwith enthusiasm.Ididn't knowatthetimethat Robertlivedhislife filledwithpassion andenthusiasmfor theworld.Ihad nevermetaman whoseenthusiasm forlifematchedmy own.

Iremembermeeting Robertonthesteps ofourConference Room.Icouldnot stoplookingathim. Astocky,gray haired,happyman withtwinklingblue eyesandaconstant smilewhojust seemedtobehappy tobealive.Iwasimmediately drawntohimandremembered whatothersweresayingabout him:

-OurfavoritePeacemaker

-Oneofthemostimportant leadersonourPlanettoday

Ispentaweekashisdriverto thevariousspeechesIhad arrangedandsawhowtrue thosewordswere.Hisspeech attheMind-SuperMindseries promptedastandingovation ashefinishedwith"Odeto Joy"onhisharmonicaanda calltoimplementhisideasfor WorldPeace.

TheaudiencevibratedandI fwashappy,alive,andfeltmy owncallingtopeaceand helpingtheworldrenewed.The moretimewespenttogether, themorewefeltliketwo magnets.

Onthethirddayoftheretreat,

IgaveaspeechwhereI mentionedthattherewere 2000daystotheyear2000and suggestedthatwewrite2000 ideasforabetterworld,whichI wouldpublishasabook.

Robertstoodupimmediately andsaid,“I’lldoit!”

Becauseofhisdutiesas ChancelloroftheUniversityof Peace,Robertwaslivingina cabininCostaRica.Hebegan tofillmymailboxinSanta Barbarawithhisideasandlove letters.(moreaboutthatlater) Thefirstbookof2,000ideas waspublished,followedbya totalof7,500ideas,12 volumeswiththisdedication:

Duringhisfiftyyearsof globalservicewiththe UnitedNations,Robert Mullerdevelopedaclear-eyed viewofthestrengthsand weaknessesoftheUN.Inan interviewwithWorldChronicle 97,heexplainedtheweakness oftheUNtopreventorresolve conflicts,aweaknessinherentin theverystructureoftheUN.

"TheUnitedNationsisaweak organizationasithasnotone singlepowerthatnationshave ...ithasnosovereignty,no militaryforces,notaxing powers.Ithasnothing.Itwas probablydevisedastheweakest organizationeverconceivedon thisearth.

"However,ithasonegreat merit:forthefirsttimeeverin history,thepartnersinworld politics...thenations…have cometogetherandhaveagreed toacertainnumberofrulesof conductwhichareinthe Charter.

Onceuponatime,inthe farawayvillageof Quisar,allthechildren suddenlydisappeared.The worriedparentssearchedall throughthevillagebutcouldn't findtheirchildren…untilthey startedhearinglaughterand singingcomingfromunderthe ground.

Asthesoundofthechildren's voicesmoved,theparents followedthem.Thejoyful soundsmoveduphillsand downvalleys,leadingthe parentsmilesandmiles throughforestsandfields.The singingluredtheparentsfor daysuntilitendedatthebase ofMt.Rasur,wheretheearth opened,allowingthechildren torunintothewaitingarmsof theirfamilies.

Behindthechildren,abeingof lightappearedanddeclared

himself: Rasur, thegodof indigenous children.Rasur raisedhisarms andinavoice bothcommanding andgentle,he spokedirectlyto thechildren, saying... "DearChildren, theGreatSpiritis ineveryanimal,in everybird,butterfly,flower, insect,leafandgrassyousee. TheGreatSpiritisalsoinyou, theCreator'schildren.Please takecareofthewonderful naturecreatedbyGodand someday,fromthismountain, youwillseethebirthofa civilizationofpeacespreadto theentireworld".

Rasurthenturnedtothe parentsandsaid, "Before directingthelightninginthe sky,youmustfirstharness thestormsinourown hearts."

Thispoemwaswrittenin 1946,andin1948,afteracivil war,CostaRicadissolvedits military.Thereare31countries intheworldthatdonothavea military.Oftencalledthe "SwitzerlandofCentral America,"CostaRicaranksas oneofthehappiestcountries ontheplanet.

BenchofDreams

Mt.RasurinCostaRicaisa placewheredreamshavea wayofsimplybeing manifestedintoreality.

The"BenchofDreams" belowislocatedatthebase ofMt.Rasurwherevisitors canmaketheirowndreams byplacingapebbleineach hand,pressingthetwohands together,and,witheyes closed,makingtheirdream. Thenonestoneisthrown ontotheEarth,sothatthe sacredEarthwillremember thedream,andtheotheris takenhomeasareminderof thedream.

Nearthe"BenchofDreams" istheindigenousfarmhouse whereRobertMullerandhis wifeBarbaraGaughen-Muller livedwhileRobertwrotehis "2000DreamsandIdeasfor theYear2000".

"Idreamthatthewonderful landoflegendaryMt.Rasur willbecomesomedayan inspiringsacredplaceforthe entireworld.Andthatthe UniversityforPeacewill becomethenewAthens,the newAcropolisoftheworld, thebirthplaceofaplanetary philosophyandvision,a schoolforheadsofstates andgloballeadersinallthe mainfieldsofhuman endeavorsandofallentities makingupthehumanfamily."

OneofthevisitorstoMt.Rasur wasJohnDenverwhowastraveling throughCostaRicawitha humanitariangroup.Aftervisiting theUniversityofPeace,someone suggestedthathemeetRobert Mullersotheyallhikedupthehillto hiscabin.

Aftertheytalkedforawhile,John askedtousetherestroomand Robertsaid,ofcourse.However, afteralongwhile,Johnhadstillnot comeoutandRobertwasworried.

Andpeacewouldbetheroadwewalk eachstepalongtheway, Peacewouldbethewaywework andpeacewouldbethewayweplay. Andallweseethat'sdifferent thanallweknow, peacewouldbethewaywelook, peace,thewaywegrow. There'sanameforseparation, there'sanameforfirstandlast, whenit'sallofusornothing, formethenameispast. Butthere'sstilltimetoturnaround, makeallhatredcease andgiveanametoallthefuture, wecouldcallitpeace. And,ifpeaceiswhatweprayfor, and,ifpeaceiswhatwegive, thenpeacewillbethewayweare, andpeace,thewaywelive. Fortherestillistimetoturnaround andmakeallhatredcease andgiveanothernametoliving, wecouldcallitpeace.

Peace.Peace.

Decidetoforgive forresentmentisnegative. Resentmentispoisonous,resentmentdiminishes, anddevourstheself.

Bethefirsttoforgive,tosmileandtotake thefirststep,andyouwillseehappinessbloom, onthefaceofyourbrotherorsister. Bealwaysthefirst.Donotwaitforothersto forgive,forbyforgivingyoubecomethemasterof fate,thefashioneroflife,thedoerofmiracles.

TheUniversalDeclarationHumanRights

EleanorRooseveltwas offeredmanypositions afterthedeathofher husband,however,theoneshe acceptedwastochairthe committeetodraftthe declarationofhumanrights.

"Wewonthewar,"shesaid, "now,weneedtowork towinthepeace."

1948wasastrangetimefor women.Theyhadsteppedall acrosstheglobetotakeon rolesleftbymenfightingthe war.Whenthewarendedand themenreturnedhome,things weredifferentandthat differencewasnotappreciated everywhere.ThemenattheUN expectedtostepbackintothe rolestheyhadleft.

Theonecommittee, consideredoflesser importance,thatwasleftfor Mrs.Rooseveltwasthe committeetodraftthe resolution.

However,that'swherethe

magichappenedaswomen acrosstheglobeinsistedona newlanguageofequalityand justice.

Thevideolinkabovetellsthe lesserknownstoryofthe womenaroundtheworldwho workedtoexpandthedefinition ofhumanrightstoinclude womenandchildren.

RobertMullerwasstillinhis internshipwhenthe Universal DeclarationofHumanRights wasdrafted,however,he recognizedtheimportanceof thismilestonedocumentand laterrecalledhowthemedia dismisseditasjustanother pieceofpaperwhenhethought itwasoneofthemostimportant documentseverwritten.

Itdefinitelyguidedand expandedhisthinkingabout whattheUNcouldbeand createdalife-longadmirationfor EleanorRooseveltandthemany womenwhobroughtthe Declarationtolife.

TheWorldAssociationof FormerUnitedNationsInternes andFellows(WAFUNIF) recordswithprofoundgriefthe saddemiseofDr.RobertG. Muller,on20thSeptember 2010,theeveofthe InternationalDayofPeace.

RobertMullerwasoneofthe mostardentsupportersofthis organizationand,despitehis variousotherengagements,he remainedcloselyassociated withitinmultitudinous capacitiesuntilhislastbreath. Besidesbeingoneofthe foundingfathersandanoriginal member,hewasanhonorary inductee,adistinguished promoter,patronandan imaginativementoraswellas anenergeticadvisoranda affablecounsel.Asanoble man,withactivedisposition andpioneeringspirit,heplayed anextremelyconstructiverole inthesepositions,andgavea newpushtotheorganization’s programsonglobalpeace, humanentirety,environ-mental safeguard,andecological balance.Still,goingevenfar beyond,heusedtotalkabout spirituality,universalism,and cosmology,asalsotobeour concerns.

Inrecognitionofthese celebratedservicesand thoughts,theAssociationitself alwaysheldhimwiththe highestesteem,includingin particularthebestowalofthe awardof“Outstanding Distinction.”

HailingfromFrance,asa youngmanoftwentyfive,he cametoNewYorkasa memberofthefirstgroupof theUNInternesandFellows (affectionatelycalledMohawks) in1948.Theinternshipledhim tothecorridorsoftheUnited

Nationsandopenedthedoors tohisvisionforglobalpeace andharmony,settinghimona lifepaththattooksomeforty yearsofworkattheUnited Nations,raisinghimtotherank ofAssistantSecretary-General. Thisaffordedhimopportunities ofindulgingdeeplyand practicallyinthedomainof internationalaffairs,givinghim apurposefulchanneltodirect hisenergies.

In1986,asaco-founder,he becametheChancellorofthe UniversityforPeaceatSan JoseinCostaRica.Herehe workedlaboriouslyand diligentlyinbuildingupthis institutioninthecauseofworld peaceandsecurity,which continuedtoflourishunderhis steerage.

Subsequently,asanardent advocateofpeace,herana broadcastingprogram Good MorningWorld thatreligiously spreadthemessageof amicabilityallaround.Inthe samezeal,heproduceda WorldCoreCurriculum,being taughtinnumerousschools aroundtheworld.Dwellingon thesamelines, hefurthermore developed several innovative “Frameworks” on“Planetary andCosmic Consciousness,”“Artsand Culture,”and “WorldMedia Coverage.”

Ablazedwiththe verytenet,he wrotemany booksinvarious languages, evoking consciousness forapeaceful

andharmoniousplanet.Thus, asanardentadvocateof peace,hope,andunity,he carriedouthismission successfully.
