Chef José Andrés

In the final segment of Stephen's interview with Chef José Andrés and director Ron Howard, Chef José delivers a pep talk for anyone who wonders how they can make an impact using resources they already have.

“You can become your own organization. You can do little things to help … like helping an elderly couple in the super market … “

“Everybody in this room, everybody in America, has a talent … if you look within, you can put that talent to bring hope to others.”

WCK responds to natural disasters, man-made crises, and humanitarian emergencies around the world.

We're a team of food first responders, mobilizing with the urgency of now to get meals to the people who need them most.

Deploying our model of quick action, leveraging local resources, and adapting in real time, we know that a nourishing meal in a time of crisis is so much more than a plate of food—it's hope, it's dignity, it's a sign that someone cares. — wck.org

WCK doesn’t hand out meals … it builds local response systems of chefs and volunteers who deliver meals where they are needed, when they are needed.

When deadly fires devastated Chile, Chef Corps member Fernanda Fuentes knew she had to help. She’s from Quilpué, one of several cities like Viña del Mar and Reñaca most impacted by the blazes. Upon joining the World Central Kitchen and Fundación Gastronomía Social teams, Chef Fernanda immediately went out into the community to find people most in need of nourishing meals. She also assisted with meal distribution and visited with some of our restaurant partners. Her local expertise was invaluable. …

WCK organizes local.

Men, women, and children all help cook and deliver meals, and find the resources needed to solve the local problems.

In 2022 alone, WCK responded to 30 climate-related crises in countries including Australia, Brazil, India, Madagascar, and the United States. WCK gets on the ground immediately following a disaster—or even ahead of events like a hurricane, when possible—to secure a kitchen and begin cooking. Utilizing whatever resources are necessary, whether it be a truck, boat, plane, helicopter, or amphibious vehicle, Days before Christmas, Super Typhoon Rai became the 15th—and strongest—typhoon to make landfall in the Philippines in 2021, affecting more than 4.2 million people and forcing over 300,000 people to evacuate their homes. WCK supported seven local groups to cook and distribute 1.4 million hot meals to impacted communities. This was the first time WCK responded in the Philippines, one of the most climate-vulnerable nations in the world where natural disasters are frequent, inevitable, and getting worse. I believe that the world’s food insecurity will continue to grow and we critically need people and organizations like Chef José Andrés and World Central Kitchen who are teaching communities around the world to mobilize in times of disaster in order to reduce suffering today and help us survive the coming years.
