CONTENTS THE VISION GETTING THERE EXCURSIONS THE VILLAS

THE VISION Old fashioned values, a sense of place, and a thriving community all make up the ŪGEN of the future. Over the coming years, the islands of Calintaan and Juac come together to form a rarely found doubleisland paradise:

!

If you listen closely enough you can make out the sound of waves rolling lazily over the reef. It’s after dusk in ŪGEN, and the entire island has come together at The Beach House for evening cocktails, ŪGEN’s equivalent of a town-hall meeting. A boisterous group is swilling martinis beside a fire pit in the sand; dinner-party invitations and double-cheek air kisses are handed out faster than highballs. It’s a decidedly swanky crowd—there are business moguls, architects, designers—Manila’s glitterati all in one place, and yet there are no dinner jackets, no lavish gowns and, perhaps most surprising of all, not many shoes. Welcome to ŪGEN, an exclusive enclave that will burnish a reputation as the epicenter of barefoot luxury.

!

On the five kilometer long, double-island paradise, you won’t find a single traffic light, street sign, or ATM. Instead quaint little path walks lead you to two hotels and a charming bed-and-breakfast. Most visitors prefer to take advantage of ŪGEN villa culture—and rightfully so. Of the 105 villas that on the island, a majority will be available for rent on a weekly basis. They come fully staffed (chefs, butlers, gardeners, property managers and housekeeping) and represent a portfolio as eclectic as their owners.

THE VISION cont’d… For high-profile visitors, the allure of ŪGEN goes beyond its pristine beaches and water-colour sunsets: The island is virtually impenetrable to paparazzi, with the coastline monitored by on-and off-shore security.
For all of ŪGEN’s utopian charm, it’s admittedly not for everyone. There are no big resorts, no shopping malls, no casinos and no golf courses. There are only four restaurants and the only out-of-home evening entertainment is sunset jazz at Katz’s, a beloved watering hole by the sea, and a little “street” entertainment in Calintaan Village.

!

It’s not unusual for guests to spend an entire week without leaving the property, especially when an affable in-house chef is at your disposal, preparing chilled carrot and passion fruit soup, fresh grilled fish with Bicolano spices and homemade ginger sorbet. Our butler moves guests throughout the whole property— spend sunsets at the Tree House Bistro, or afternoon delights at the deli pavilion.
When visitors do leave their homes, be it for a gourmet picnic at the Pink Beach or a game of chess at Katz’s, they travel via an ATV hybrid. Even the most uptight New Yorkers quickly adopt the tradition of waving to passersby, or stopping to offer a lift to a stranger on foot. “Nobody locks their doors on this island—nobody. I keep my car keys in my car. I’m not supposed to say that, but that’s the way it is. I guess we live in LaLa Land here. I hope it never changes.”

GETTING THERE AND AROUND ! There will be two ways to reach your ultimate vacation home:

!

1. By far the quickest and simplest is through our own seaplanes from Manila Bay. Within 90-minutes, you land on the pink shores of ŪGEN just 5-minutes from your Villa.
2.Alternatively, from NAIA Terminal 3, where we’ll be positioning our own Lounge, take a scheduled flight to Legazpi (40-minutes), from where we can either take you on a helicopter ride in 30 minutes, or take you on a scenic ride to the southern tip of Bicol and speed you over on our private boat.
Our boats and helicopters are available to take you to neighbouring islands and scenic sights in the region. Getting around the island is a breeze, with custom-made Ultra Terrain Vehicles to get you to the highest peaks or the lowest valleys.

As the sun rises in the morning, both glow a subtle rose pink. The beaches offer that rare chance to walk along meters of powdery sand, hand-in-hand beneath the shade of trees, with little to disturb.

!

Or, take a picnic basket with your butler to one of the various private serene coves for the afternoon.

!

LAKES & LAGOONS: Various salt-water lagoons offer beautiful ecological experiences—from kayaking along the Mangrove forest to fishing. The Lakes offer pleasant boating experiences and picnics while watching the world go by.

WATERSPORTS: An extensive range of water sports are available on the island from scuba diving to snorkelling, and windsurfing. Visit our well stocked Water Sports Centre located on the ŪGEN Bay where you can choose from boogie boards, windsurfers, stand up paddle boards or even a glass bottom kayak to explore the reefs beneath.

SCUBA DIVING: ŪGEN offers some of the best scuba diving in the country. With a dedicated team of professional PADI instructors and dive masters, and the latest equipment, we cater to beginners and experienced divers.

!

THE CAVES: One of the most famous attractions are the caves with their hidden beaches and the raw beauty of the amazing rock formations within.

ON-ISLAND ACTIVITIES TENNIS: Tennis is very popular amongst ŪGEN guests. There are two floodlit courts. A range of tennis lessons and courses are available with our resident tennis coach, including daily drop-in games for those looking for social match play. Use of the tennis courts is complimentary.

!

EQUESTRIAN: Explore ŪGEN on horseback, riding up into the hills to enjoy the wonderful view or gallop through the surf on one of the private beaches. Group or private lessons can be arranged.

!

SHOPPING: In the nearby village of Calintaan sits the boutique retail hamlet with a hair salon, flower shop, art gallery, convenience store and various local artifacts and clothing.

FOR CHILDREN: ŪGEN is a haven for children of all ages. The islands intimacy and security allows teenagers to roam safely and mingle with newfound friends, allowing parents to relax and unwind without worry. For very young children, there are nannies available to give parents time to themselves.

ŪGEN has a dedicated Social Director who arranges a fantastic array of fun activities and events, such as drive in movie night, tennis, pony camp, beach picnics, treasure hunts, and kite flying competitions, which make the island of ŪGEN a supremely safe and blissful retreat for anyone looking for the perfect family escape.

OFF-ISLAND ACTIVITIES WHALESHARK WATCHING Massive yet surprisingly amiable, whale sharks, locally known as Butanding, are among many next-door island highlights in UGEN. Swim and marvel at these gentle, dot-speckled giants for a surreal, larger-thanlife interactive experience. Visit your friendly neighbour just two hours by boat or fifteen minutes by helicopter.

HISTORICAL TOURS A quiet drive along Sorsogon’s countryside takes you to the town of Barcelona, whose old-world landscape is reminiscent of the famed city of Catalonia. Built in Spanish colonial architecture using limestone, egg whites, and local wine, the Barcelona Church is one of the oldest and most well-preserved churches in the region.

ISLAND TOURS Visit the neighbouring island of Biri and marvel at the rock formations are around two hours by boat or fifteen minutes by helicopter.

SURFING Soaring waves cut ripples through the aqua blue waters in Gubat, a surfing hideout along the eastern coast of Bicol all year round. Ten-foot waves rolling along the reefs make for a thrilling ride, while novice surfers will find the steady swells crashing against a perfectly flat, powdery shore delighting.

!

!

CRATER LAKE KAYAKING It is a rare chance to visit an active volcano and take out a boat to its crater lake. Bulusan Volcano is home to the Philippine brown deer and Philippine Eagleowl; the lush rainforest surrounding the lake has earned it the name the “Switzerland of the Orient.”
