Rebellion and Johannesburg premiered in Germany in September 2015 and officially opens the Dance Umbrella 2016. The piece is a modernised interpretation of the classic Shakespearean story Romeo and Juliet set on a backdrop of a transforming street subculture in Johannesburg. With an original score created by Spoek Mathambo, costume and set design by Anmari Honiball, film projection by Ed Blignaut and choreographically assisted by Sonnyboy Motau, the piece examines the complexities of a generation of young South Africans faced with the challenges of a transforming country. Having returned from an ßber successful tour in Germany, don’t miss this chance to see it!!

The Last Attitude Choreographer: Mamela Nyamza and Nelisiwe Xaba Dramaturg: Boyzie Cekwana Venue: The Dance Factory,

Dance Umbrella 2016 | Page 4

Dates: Saturday February 27 @ 19:30 & Sunday February 28 @ 14:30

This is a sneak preview before The Last Attitude takes off to New York! Nelisiwe Xaba and Mamela Nyamza, the collaborators of The Last Attitude will interrogate the politics of this ancient art form, in particular the male posture and the relationship between the male principal dancer and the ballerina. Originally the male dancer served as a porter, lifting the ballerina to show how light she is and also showing his masculinity. The progression of the male in Ballet has been phenomenal from a time where they didn’t dance at all, to today where they take centre stage.

Lingering

A collaborative work by South African Thami Majela and Swiss choreographer Margarita Kennedy.

Choreographer: Sonia Radebe and Teresa Mojela

A dance piece that looks at the connections found in movement, memory and sensory perceptions. It seeks to find shared experiences and to rediscover the relationship between the inside and outside world.

Exploring the physicality of thought this work is inspired by the curiosity of what happens in the mind when a thought lingers. The work was created at the Dance Space as part of the CONNECTIONS project funded by the National Arts Council.

The expression of the land, the voice of the men, the strength that binds them, the weight, the density of the air, the void, the silence, a sense of togetherness and of loneliness. Extremes and their limits. Love and disaffection. Florabela Espanca’s sonnets speak to beauty and the soul of Alentejano and this work fuses the music composed by Olafur Arnald’s and Cante Alentejaro in a contemporary fusion of dance and music.

Ketima Choreographer: Gregory Maqoma Venue: John Kani Theatre,

Dance Umbrella 2016 | Page 8

Dates: Wednesday March 2 & Thursday, March 3 @ 20:15

Ketima is a male quartet that was first presented in 2003. Now in 2016 Maqoma has revived the work with new members of the Vuyani Dance Company with a male and female quartet. The audience will have an opportunity to see how the work was created on bodies that did not define gender; created on the essence of childhood exploring human rashness in relation to the tranquillity of nature. Ketima examines phases of development from crawling through toddling to the time when thoughts, feelings and actions get hooked to the mainstream of life.

“I have experienced so much death in my life... and every time it’s the same story... people get to know a part of you, they spend time with you, you get to know them, something happens they die, you have a memorial service to pay tribute to them... and their flyer gets put in to a drawer... but how many of us don’t wish we had said all when the person was still alive...They say if you want to get to know someone spend time with them... I would like to give you 30 minutes to get a glimpse of me! Who I am, what moves me or how I move, share some of my thoughts, and what drives me... my likes, dislikes and FEARS... This work is a tribute to me. Call me vain but...why wait until I’m no longer around for you to know who I am.
