12 month placement (lead designer) 2011/12 designing mobility equipment for the servilely disabled “Independent Living – The Professional Way”

Designed for carers and occupational therapists to use in conjunction with a lifting hoist to facilitate the washing and changing of a physically disabled user. The product features an adjustable angled head-rest and overall bed height as well as a removable inner stretcher for changing of the fabric meshing.

spa pool cradle adaption

Designed for occupational therapists to use in conjunction with a lifting hoist to facilitate hydrotherapy treatment in a spa pool for a servilely physically disabled user. The stand is height adjustable for varying water depths and cross-compatible with the full range of daily care cradle sizes.

‘HYDRO qUENC’ water bottle

Project brief set in association with Hydro Aluminium to design a new product in which aluminium extrusions forms an integral part. Initial research suggested both a commercial viability and social benefits (childhood obesity and environmental demands from disposable bottles) in designing a long-life water bottle for primary school children. The proposed design solution includes a durable aluminium body with an ergonomic profile and flat sides preventing the bottle from accidentally rolling off surfaces, removable polypropylene base cap for ease of cleaning internally, a low material and tooling cost per unit ($2.98 at 40,000 unit) and customisation options (various colour choices, inclusion of an enclosed loop for key-rings / lanyards and aluminium body suited for laser etching).

etimex microwave meal trays

Paid freelance work (completed within personal time during placement year) for an international German packaging company designing and modelling microwave oven food trays. The geometric form of the trays where specified to reflect suggested novel themes such as specific cuisine and childhood novelties. Currently under further internal development and much of the content remains undisclosed.

The ‘Key 2.0’ novelty product

The “Design Innovation in Plastic” contest brief specified the design of an innovational, polymer product to put some “fun back into the lives of users”. My entry; “The Key 2.0”, is a novelty pocket sized product which integrates a spring released key, LED torch and bottle opener. The spring released key is designed to fit any shape of Yale key and release it for use at the push of a button, allowing for quick identification of a single frequently used key with minimum effort. The motion of releasing the key is deemed to be novel and fun but also serves to prevent the key from scratching other valuables contained in the same pocket or bag. The product’s body is transparent making the internal components and moving parts visible, creating a visually intriguing product.

the ‘easy air’ table lamp academic year 2010-11 (freelance project)

Project entry for “The Lighting Association: Student Lighting Design 2011” contest; the “EASY AIR” table lamb. Inspired by Frank ‘O Ghery use of materials in the “easy edge” furniture series, the body of the EASY AIR lamp is manufactured from layers of corrugated cardboard between hardwood veneers to create a unique, “visually striking” product. The products geometric form is derivative of recent developments in the field of industrial design and particularly the work of Jonathan Ive with Apple. The lamp is designed to be used in any of the 3 possible orientations to allow for manipulation of how the light is emitted, the 5 low energy LEDs produce around 75 lumens making it a suitable ambient light source for bedrooms and living rooms.
