Coaching Staff
Jeremy Provence Head Coach Jeremy Provence returned to his alma mater for the 2014 season to serve as the head men’s and women’s cross country coach after a recordsetting career as a studentathlete. Provence was also named the head coach of Ozarks’ newest sport - men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor distance track - a position he took in December of 2014. Provence begins his second season as head coach in 2015-2016 after posting a solid first year. Provence quickly injected energy into the program with enthusiasm and high expectations. With an outstanding recruiting class under his belt, the 2015-2016 season promises to be even more competitive. Several new runners ran at an elite high school level and look to provide an instant boost to both the men’s and women’s program in 2015. Provence, a native of Bidville, Ark., ran four years at Ozarks, and owns the second-fastest 8K time (25:54) in school history. He is the only runner in men’s program history to earn Capital One Academic All-District honors and one of only two runners to be a member of the US Track & Field & Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team. Provence participated in four NCAA III Regional races during his career at Ozarks. He was named to the USTFCCCA All-Region Team and All-Conference Team in 2011 and was a member of the American Southwest Conference All-Academic Team three times. Following his standout running career, Provence served as a volunteer assistant for the men’s and women’s cross country program at NCAA II University of West Florida in 2012 and then was a graduate assistant during the 2013 season at UWF. Provence holds a USA Track and Field Level One certification. Provence received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Ozarks in 2012. He received his master’s degree in health, leisure, and exercise science with an emphasis in exercise science from UWF in 2014. In addition to coaching, Provence is an adjunct instructor for the health science program at Ozarks.
Jackie Bacon Assistant Coach Jackie Bacon was named the assistant men’s and women’s cross country and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor distance track coach in August of 2015. Bacon, a native of Ozark, Missouri, will serve as the program’s Social Media Director and lead fundraiser. Bacon comes to Ozarks after a multiple-sport collegiate career. Bacon played basketball at Harding University for two seasons, helping the program to a pair of Great American Conference regular season championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances. Prior to Harding, Bacon played two seasons at Avila University, leading the team to the NAIA National Tournament. She also played one season of softball at Avila. She is an active member of the Arkansas Road Runners Club of America and completed her first half marathon in April, finishing fourth in her age group and was the tenth female overall with a time of 1:37:32. Bacon’s public relations experience includes serving as the Media Coordinator for Youth Baseball Nationals and as a Co-Director for Searcy Kids Track Night, a non-profit organization in Searcy, Ark., that encourages fitness at an early age. Bacon helped the youth running initiative raise over $2,800 and increased the number of participants to 155. She received her bachelor’s degree in public relations from Harding in 2015. She and her husband, Nathan, were married in 20

Talented incoming Class Gives Program Boost The U of O men’s and women’s cross country teams will receive a lift from a strong recruiting class for the upcoming 2015 running season. Head Coach Jeremy Provence enters his second year with the program and is expecting his newest crop of freshmen to provide valuable talent. “Several new faces will join the program this fall and I believe each has the potential to make an immediate impact,” he said. “I can sense the excitement building within our program.” On the women’s side, Provence returns four runners from last season, including sophomores Stephanie Alderson, Madison Sherrer and Erika Henderson. Nena Evans is also back for her final year. “Stephanie, Madison and Nena were running up in the front of the pack last year,” he said. “Nena came in really fit and I think she will have a good year. Madison is an athlete and a workhorse. She is running well, too. Stephanie is very consistent and I know what I will get out of her.” Provence’s goal for Nena Evans the women’s team is to compete in the NCAA III regional at the end of the season. “I want to take the entire team to the NCAA III regional,” he said. “But I told them they have to finish among the top three in the conference to go. I don’t know if we are there right now, but if they continue to work hard and improve, and if they believe they can make it, then I fully expect us to be going.” With the addition of his talented newcomers, Provence is happy with the direction of the program. “We have more of a team atmosphere,” he said. “There is a good vibe. They are starting to see the direction we are headed and are excited about it.” On the men’s team, seven seniors graduated from the program last year, but returners Samuel Binns and Cade Edwards will provide valuable experience to what will be a roster full of new faces. “Cade led us last year in a couple of races,” he
said. “The mileage he has put in will pay off. I think he will have a really good season. Samuel is another experienced runner that keeps improving.” Newcomers include Stephen Babb and Dylan Holman. “There are guys up front running together and pushing each other,” he said. “I don’t know if we are there as a team to go to regionals, but I would love to take individuals. I can see some of them running well enough to go. They are working hard.” Ozarks will open the season in the Ouachita Baptist Bob Gravett Invitational September 5 in Arkadelphia. Ozarks will then travel to Memphis, Tenn., to compete in the Rhodes College Invitational September 26. The Ozarks Invitational Cade Edwards will be held October 10 in Clarksville. “I like having a meet the first weekend in September,” he said. “This gives the runners a little taste of competition early and builds excitement for the rest of the season. And, moving the Ozarks Invitational back a few weeks will allow for a much more competitive race. Several teams have expressed they will be attending and it looks to be one of the largest home meets we have hosted.”

Discover University of the Ozarks student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their interests and passions beyond the classroom and field of play...to discover themselves. Develop University of the Ozarks provides an environment that encourages student-athletes to develop into well-rounded adults. Small class sizes, the ability to participate in more than one sport, and an emphasis on participating activities outside of the classroom are all hallmarks of the NCAA Division III experience.
University of the Ozarks is a member of the NCAA Division III and the American Southwest Conference. We are a small, private, nationally acclaimed and accredited university with a “whole-student” focus. We consider athletics a huge part of developing potential for our student-athletes. We’ll offer you the support you need to win, both academically and competitively. At U of O, you’ll play the sport you love while finding the direction you need.
Dedicate University of the Ozarks expects student-athletes to dedicate themselves to achieving their potential. Student-athletes must manage their busy schedules, keep up with class work and face the same challenges as the rest of the student-body.

From the eight founding institutions to today’s present group of 13 college and universities, the ASC encompasses institutions sharing similar educational and athletic philosophies. The roster of American Southwest Conference members includes Belhaven University, Concordia University Texas, East Texas Baptist University, Hardin-Simmons University, Howard Payne University, LeTourneau University, Louisiana College, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry University, University of the Ozarks, Sul Ross State University, University of Texas at Dallas and University of Texas at Tyler.
