Coaching Staff

Cullen Dees Head Coach Cullen Dees enters his first year as the Head Men’s and Women’s Tennis Coach. Dees, a native of Canyon, Texas, brings assistant coaching experience from a successful NCAA Division III men’s and women’s program as well as strong ties to the American Southwest Conference (ASC). Dees spent the last three seasons at Schreiner University as the assistant men’s and women’s coach, helping both programs to unparalleled success. In just one year, Dees helped elevate Schreiner among the best tennis teams within the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), highlighted by an undefeated conference record (4-0) on the women’s side in 2015. The men’s team finished with a 3-1 conference mark and advanced all the way to the semi-finals of the SCAC Tournament in 2015. During his time at Schreiner, the women’s program averaged twelve wins per season, while the men’s team posted three straight winning seasons in conference play. The women’s team finished No. 18 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association West Region poll following the 2015 spring season. Also during the 2015 spring season, the men defeated regionally-ranked Hardin-Simmons. A combined 22 women’s and men’s players received All-Conference honors during his tenure. Dees was a four-year standout for ASC foe Hardin-Simmons University from 2009-2012, achieving All-Conference all four seasons. He ended his senior season as a First Team All-Conference performer at No. 3 singles. He also made the ASC All-Academic Team during his collegiate career. Dees is a USPTA Level 2 teaching professional and a Crossfit Level 1 trainer. In addition to tennis, Dees served as the Head Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Coach for one season at Schreiner. Dees received his bachelor’s degree in behavioral science from Hardin-Simmons in 2012.

Scott Eibes Assistant Coach Scott Eibes enters his second season as the Assistant Men's and Women's Tennis Coach. Eibes was a key contributor in elevating the men's tennis program to among the region's best during his playing and coaching career. A native of Burlington, Iowa, Eibes earned All-Conference honors in singles and doubles and led Ozarks to the American Southwest Conference playoffs his senior season. He was also instrumental in helping the men’s program earn a regional ranking from the ITA. Eibes also lettered in cross country during his collegiate career. In addition to coaching tennis, Eibes served as the assistant softball coach during the 2015 season. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Ozarks in physical education.

Women’s Team Full of Potential The 2016 women’s team is full of potential thanks to a strong incoming freshmen class and veteran leadership from its returning players. Under new Head Coach Cullen Dees, the team is expected to be a playoff contender. “My goal for this team is to see improvement as the season progresses,” he said. “We want to peak at the right time. I’ve told them to not ride the highs to high and the lows to low. If we improve one percent every day, we will be where we need to be by the time conference matches begin. We will have a chance to make the tournament.” The freshmen trio of Imani Doyle, Paige Myers and Kayla Tucker are driving the expectations. “We have a strong freshmen group,” said Dees. “Our top three in the lineup could be freshman. They are all very athletic. They have all-around games with big serves. They should give opponents tough matches.” The returners with match experience include senior Elly Eibes and junior Andrea Munoz. “We have good leadership with our upperclassmen,” said Dees. “Elly is excited to give it her all her last year.” To reach its potential, Dees feels like his team will need to do work on the little things throughout the season. “I want them to take care of the little things and pay attention to detail,” he said. “We have a challenging road schedule so I think it is imperative to remain focused. I do think we will grow with experience. There is a lot to be excited about this season.” The women’s team opens the season February 12 on the road against Sul Ross State University and Howard Payne University.

2016 Preview

New Look, Same Goals For Men’s Team The ultra-successful men’s tennis program will have a new look this season, but the goals are still the same for new Head Coach Cullen Dees. Dees takes the reigns of a program that has qualified for post-season play the last two seasons, and has been regionally ranked by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Dees’ task at hand will include replacing the entire lineup, but the first-year coach views it as an opportunity rather than a challenge. “Our returners are excited it is now their team and a have chance to display their talents,” he said. “They have the years under their belt, but they don’t have the match experience. There is tremendous competition for who will be in the lineup. I want our seniors to go out with a good season and they certainly deserve it for contributing the past three years. We want to maintain the success of this program.” Alix Tiegs and Bryant Ford are the lone seniors on the team, and Dees is expecting big things from them. “We have two seniors that have been part of the program and now it is their time to show what they can do,” said Dees. “They are ready to play for a spot in the lineup.” Junior Dillon Murray and sophomore Jacob Organ are battled tested, and performed well at the ITA’s in the fall. “Jacob and Dillon will likely play towards the top,” said Dees. “Their doubles play at the ITA’s was outstanding. Bryant also played well that weekend. The fall was a good measuring stick where we need to be physically and how we need to play. There are a few things that need to be cleaned up.” Dees expects his team to compete for a spot in the American Southwest Conference playoffs despite its new look. “We want to qualify for the playoffs,” he said. “I’ve talked to them about the process of getting better and making that one percent improvement every day. We need to compete well against our conference opponents in order to have a chance for post-season play.” The men’s team opens the season February 6 at home against UA-Fort Smith.
