| COACHING STAFF | Carl Ramsey Head Coach Carl Ramsey begins his first season as Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Ozarks. Ramsey made the jump to his alma mater after spending the last 29 seasons as head coach at one of the top high school girl’s basketball programs in Arkansas. Ramsey’s senior high teams averaged 22 wins during his career and he posted a 660-227 (.744) overall record. While at Lamar High School, his teams made eight state tournament appearances during his tenure, including a stretch of four straight years where the Lady Warriors played for the state championship (19871991). He won state titles in both 1988 and 1991. 19 of his teams produced more than 20 wins. He coached 22 All-State players and five who have played in the Arkansas Activities Association All-Star Game.
hard. I want players that want to be part of a strong program.” Ramsey received his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Ozarks in 1979. Ramsey and his wife, Kathy, are the parents of one son and one daughter.
Ramsey, who never had a losing season, guided Lamar to 24 regional tournament appearances. Six of his teams went to the regional championship game, with three of those winning the title. In addition to his coaching career, he served as the school’s athletic director the past 24 years. Ramsey’s teams at Lamar were known for applying a tenacious full court defensive press, while having a balanced offensive attack. Playing hard was a key component to his success. “My state championship teams had different offensive styles,” said Ramsey. “My overall philosophy is that we will play hard every game. We will prepare well and figure out what suits us best to win games. I would love to press and play up-tempo if the right kids are in place. I would like to create a lot of offense with our defense.” Ramsey was voted the Conference Coach of the Year 10 times and was a five-time KARV Dream Team Coach of the Year honoree. In 1990, he was the head coach of the West team in the Arkansas Activities Association All-Star Game. “The Ozarks’ campus will sell itself,” said Ramsey. “The university has an outstanding academic reputation and it provides a family-like atmosphere. The people who work here are selling points. The studentfaculty ratio is another selling point. A student here receives valuable individual attention. Those were the type of things that I enjoyed as a student here. On the court, I want to find passionate players who work

UNIVERSITY OF THE OZARKS INTRODUCTION
| 2009-2010 PREVIEW | Ramsey Takes Reigns Of Program The University of the Ozarks landed wellknown Arkansas High School Girl’s Basketball Coach Carl Ramsey over the summer after a successful 29 seasons at Lamar High School. Ramsey enters the collegiate ranks with a tall task in front of him as he needs to replace the top two scorers and top rebounder. His alma mater hasn’t had a winning season in eight years and only two years ago, the team posted a 1-24 record. However, the 2008-2009 Lady Eagles did make strides, winning five games and losing four others by single digits. And, he inherits several players that played significant minutes last season, including five promising sophomores. In all, three starters return, and over sixty percent of the team’s three-point shooters are back. Ramsey also has twin towers Sabrina Goddard and Alexa Booth, both of whom are 6-foot-1 post players, to give Ozarks a formidable front line. Goddard, a sophomore, averaged 8.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game a year ago. She had three games with 20 points and posted one double-double. Booth played at Murray State College last season, helping the team to the first round of the playoffs. “You can’t coach size,” said Ramsey, who never had a losing season at Lamar High School. “Hopefully, it will provide match-up problems against our opponents. We are counting on them to provide defense and rebounding. They both have a good frame and are strong to go along with solid moves around the basket. But they still need to understand that it is not really how big you are, but rather how big you play. I want them to be more physical and take up more room and seal better. I want them to use their strong bodies to their advantage. They can be special inside.” Ozarks, which finished 5-20 overall and 3-17 in the American Southwest Conference, has a number of returners that can
Sabrina Goddard
provide firepower from the outside, and with a pair of capable inside players, those perimeter players should get open looks. Junior Ally Goddard, senior Kristyn Shinn and sophomores April Young, Alison Villines and Ashley Teague hit a combined 88 three-pointers last season. “We shoot the ball pretty well,” said Ramsey. “We have to work on our execution and get ourselves free. We are not the quickest, most athletic team so creating things on our own is a little bit harder. But when they do get a look, they have shot well. I think the ability to shoot the ball is one of our strengths.” Goddard led the team in assists (2.3) and was the only player on the team to start in all 25 games last season. Shinn has valuable playing experience and quickness on the perimeter. Young averaged 5.8 points per A. Goddard game and hit 83 percent from the free throw line. Villines started in 24 games and averaged 6.0 points per game while Teague finished second on the team in three-point field goals (28). “Ally hit 17 three-pointers in two minutes at our Hoops Madness,” said Ramsey. “When she gets herself set and if we can get her open, she is a solid shooter. I have been real impressed with April. She is strong and does a good job of getting the ball to the basket. She can finish inside and that makes her even harder to guard. Kristyn is quick and a good ball handler. Ashley hit 28 three-pointers last season. Alison is a proven player having started in 24 games as a freshman.” Each newcomer will have a role to play in Ramsey’s system, too. 5-foot-2 freshman point guard Chelsea Glasscock excels in the open floor with her quickness. Freshmen guards Jordan Patton and Ariel Henderson are additional outside specialists. “I am real pleased with Chelsea,” said Ramsey. “She has done a great job for us. She is full of energy and can handle the ball. She will have to be quick and smart because she may not be able to throw over the top of people. Jordan is more of a set type shooter and Ariel can hit the three, too.” Another key newcomer is forward Lindsey Louks. Louks, 5-foot-9, was an All-State player at Pangburn High School, and will provide assistance in the post area. Veteran Savannah Carter will see time at the post position in addition to a perimeter spot. “Lindsey will have to help us in the post,” said Ramsey. “She has always played post and feels more comfortable there. We may even use Savannah inside. She is shorter, but is the strongest kid in the weight room. And, she is not afraid to mix it up.” Ramsey is known in the Arkansas ranks as a defensive mind, emphasizing a tough
full-court press. One concern as Ramsey tries to implement a press is the team’s lack of depth. “We want our opponents to use a lot of time to get the ball down the floor,” said Ramsey. “We want to put some pressure on the basketball, but we will try to slow the game down with a softer type press. Obviously, a weakness is our depth. We will have to play a lot of minutes and find a way to play the game where we can dictate the tempo.” Defensively, the Lady Eagles must improve its post defense and guarding opponents off the dribble, according to Ramsey. “The two things that really hurt last year were post defense and penetration off the dribble,” said Ramsey. “It all started with someone giving up containment. Those are two things we have tried to address. We will try to do some things to slow down the penetration of guards. We want to double down on the post, too. That is a big key for us defensively. We have to play together and we have to play hard all of the time, not just in spurts.” Ramsey prefers a balanced offensive attack from his teams. In addition to solid defensive play and balanced scoring, success this season hinges on the team’s effort, the veteran coach believes. “It will have to be a team effort,” said Ramsey. “I think everyone will have to step in there and give us minutes. It will have to be a balanced attack. I am not sure if we have a star on the team and scoring could come from S. Carter a variety of players. But as long as everyone is contributing I don’t care where the scoring comes from. We would like to get the type of team where each player is hard to guard. Offensively, it is all about execution. You can’t all of the sudden make yourself more athletic and bigger. But I think you can play a little smarter.” Ramsey has been pleased with the team’s attitude in his short time as a college head coach. “Their attitude has been good,” said Ramsey. “They are still in the process of adjusting. I am asking them to do some things they haven’t done before. The game is still the same and fundamentals are the same, and you still win with that.”

UNIVERSITY OF THE OZARKS REVIEW
| 2008-09 SEASON REVIEW | Academic Excellence Four players were named to the 2008-2009 American Southwest Conference All-Academic team. Included on the team were: Ally Goddard, a sophomore Early Childhood Education major from Siloam Springs, Ark.; Kayla Quertermous, a sophomore Physical Education major from Sullivan, Mo.; Olivia Fisher, a senior Biology major from Mountain Home, Ark.; and Kasie Osmond, a senior Strategic Communications major from Pierce City, Mo. To be eligible for ASC All-Academic honors, student-athletes must have lettered in the 2008-2009 season, be in at least their second academic year at their institution, and carry a career gradepoint average of 3.00 or better. Helping Hands The University of the Ozarks women’s basketball team hosted the Area 4 Special Olympics Basketball Tournament last season. Four co-ed teams from around the area participated in the event for a chance to advance to the state tournament held in Russellville. Assistant women’s basketball coach Joey Curtis was pleased to be able to help with the tourney, stating “It was a good experience for the team,” said Curtis. “The girls had a lot of fun. We were glad to have the opportunity to help out with such a worthy cause.” Those members of the women’s team volunteering for the event were Danielle Froggatt, Ally Goddard, Sabrina Goddard, Ashley Teague, Alison Villines, April Young and coaches Christina Jost, Emma Bottorff and Curtis. The team provided assistance with a skills challenge test as well as refereeing games throughout the day. The tournament brought in approximate 25-30 players, including a team from Clarksville’s Forrester-Davis Development Center.

For 175 years, University of the Ozarks has approached education with an unyielding search for truth. That search led our founders to establish the first co-educational college west of the Mississippi. It set the stage for the first Arkansas woman to receive a college degree. And because truth often defies convention, ours was the first historically white college in the state to admit African-Americans. Every day, our history inspires Ozarks students to discover their own individual truths. But we won’t expect you to find the answers alone. Through every step of your search, we’ll stand by you as true scholars, mentors, and friends. Founded in 1834 as Cane Hill School, University of the Ozarks is a private, four-year comprehensive university affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. Located on 30 acres in Clarksville, Arkansas (pop. 7,500), Ozarks is home to about 675 students from 22 states and 20 countries. More than 80 percent of our faculty hold the highest degrees in their fields. Because we’re small by design, our average class size is 14 and the student/ faculty ratio is 13:1. More than 60 majors, minors, and preprofessional degrees, from Composite Science to Strategic Communications are offered. Many Ozarks graduates also go on to top graduate programs in law, medicine, and engineering.
The central mall of campus is flanked by historic Munger Chapel and Walker Hall, a $7 million facility that houses a television studio, radio station, and state-of-the art editing suites. The 38,000-square-foot Robson Library houses more than 175,000 items for reading and research. Seventy-five percent of students live on campus in one of six residence halls that feature such perks as recreation rooms and in-room computer connections. At roughly half the national average for a private, liberal arts education, University of the Ozarks’ tuition offers exceptional value. About 95 percent of students receive some type of financial aid, including scholarships, grants, loans, and work study. Over $7.7 million in financial aid is distributed annually. You may have heard that a liberal arts education is all about mental agility, intellectual prowess, service to others, and critical thinking. We couldn’t agree more. But at Ozarks, we’re also steeped in the tradition of preparedness – for your career, for graduate school, for life. A key part of being prepared is knowing when to ask for help. Ozarks’ Student Support Services (SSS) provides free tutoring, a 24-hour computer lab, resume assistance, career and grad school strategies, and more than a dozen other services to help students achieve their very best. Internships are an essential part of the college experience, allowing you to practice newfound skills “in the field” and try a career (or two)
THE UNIVERSITY OF THE OZARKS
on for size. Ozarks interns are doing research in polymer chemistry, working with the forest service, and volunteering for national political campaigns. Just how much can one student get involved? One Ozarks student landed internships at both the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. and the FOX News Network in Manhattan and created films for Little Rock’s “48 Hour Film Festival” as well as the Cinequest Film Festival. Once Ozarks graduates get out into the world, there’s no stopping them. Our alumni pursue a truly incredible array of careers, from writing for ad agencies and practicing clinical psychology to working for the Secret Service. And if you’re interested in furthering your education, expect to be in good company. More than 85 percent of Ozarks students who apply are accepted to top graduate, medical, and law schools. If you’re not accustomed to personal interaction with your instructors, you’ll get used to it soon enough. Both in and out of class, Ozarks faculty demand accountability (don’t be surprised if you get a phone call from your professor when you miss class). That sort of “personal attention” is just one example of our genuine concern for each individual student’s progress. Our faculty is known for inspiring remarkable acts. With their help, students are studying abroad in Strasburg, Florence, and Hong Kong. They’re learning about new forms of international currency trading from experts in the field, and using their Latin skills to enhance research papers on medieval
drama. If this sounds more like master’s work than undergraduate, it’s no accident. Because University of the Ozarks is small by design, professors have the time to delve deeply into every student’s interests – and help make the most of their talents. In the political science program, Dr. Gil Parks’ students are researching national human rights legislation at American University in D.C. and taking on internships with the National Republican Senatorial Committee. They’re also attending law schools nationwide, including Notre Dame, Pepperdine, and Georgetown. Similarly, Dr. Sean Coleman encourages his pre-med students to take full advantage of the liberal arts, with foreign language minors, and immersion trips to countries like Mexico and Italy. With over 40 clubs and organizations to choose from, it isn’t hard to find one you’re truly passionate about. For some, it’s a club with academic affiliations like Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) – a global, non-profit organization that helps members develop leadership, teamwork, and communication skills by championing free enterprise and community service. Others pursue more personal passions by joining Amnesty International, College Republicans, or Young Democrats. And if you’re simply looking to have fun, you won’t be disappointed. In the student
center, ping-pong matches have been known to go on for hours, and you never know when a soccer game might break out in the quad. Movie nights often hit the big screens in the residence halls, where camaraderie and community come together. At Ozarks, serious sports fans have a lot to cheer about. As a member of NCAA Division III and the American Southwest Conference, our teams square off against competitors from Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi. Our teams make the playoffs and our student-athletes consistently earn All-America and All-Conference honors. Our Eagles compete academically, too. They regularly appear on ASC all-academic rosters and are recognized for high marks by national organizations. Fans pack the house for home basketball games at charming Mabee Gymnasium. The student section is well-known by opposing teams as vocal and energetic, giving the Eagles a true home court advantage.
