> > Coaching Staff Bryan Drotar Head Coach Bryan Drotar begins his fifth season at Ozarks. In his first year, he led the Lady Eagles to a program-best 8 wins. The team also tied for the most conference wins (6) in school history. The 2008 campaign saw four players earn All-Conference honors, while eight others were named Academic All-Conference. Two made the NSCAA Scholar-Athlete All-Region Team. The 2009 team had eight players on the conference’s All-Academic Team, while a pair of players were named to the All-Conference Team. His 2009 team also tied a school record for most shutouts in a season (5). Drotar hauled in one of the biggest recruiting classes in program history in 2011 as he received commitments ranging from Texas to Tennessee in year four. The 2011 squad received the NSCAA Team Academic Award for its team grade point average. It was the fourth time the program has been given the award. Drotar, a native of Longmont, Colo., was the head women’s soccer coach at NAIA Geneva College (Pa.)

from 2002-2005 where he led the team to the playoffs in 2003. Prior to his arrival, the team went 3-15-0. Drotar’s team steadily improved in each of his three seasons, with the 2003 team posting a 4-5-1 conference mark. His teams consistently played one of the toughest schedules in the region, competing against NCAA II teams on a regular basis. He served as the assistant women’s coach at NAIA Missouri Baptist College for one season, helping them to a 12-5-1 record in 2001. Drotar was the boy’s and girl’s head coach at Longmont High School (Colo.) and led both teams to the playoffs during his tenure. Prior to Ozarks, he was the Director of Coaching with the Pittsburgh Strikers Soccer Club and was the owner of Step Ahead Soccer, a Pittsburgh-area business that provides private and group lessons. Drotar earned his bachelor’s degree in biblical studies from Colorado Christian University in 1996. He received his master’s degree in sports science from the United States Sports Academy in 2005. He holds an “A” License from the United States Soccer Federation and has an advanced National Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. 2012 Preview > > Heading into the 2012 season, Head Women’s Soccer Coach Bryan Drotar is content with the talent level and improved depth of his team. Ozarks returns 11 lettermen, including a solid sophomore class to go along with an impressive freshmen crop. Seven starters are back for Drotar’s team, which finished 3-16-0 overall in 2011. “We have a solid sophomore and freshmen class,” said Drotar. “When you add those two classes together with what we already had in place, I think we are in good shape. Our depth makes us a stronger team. We are youthful, but more balanced.” While last year’s freshmen class took their lumps, it is a group that is seasoned in the competitive American Southwest Conference. “Having that freshmen class compete in the ASC will benefit us this season,” said Drotar. “They will be more prepared. They know what to expect and we can depend on them. We are on the right track. The future here is bright. This puts us in a position to be better over the next few years.” With just two more additional conference wins last season, Ozarks could have finished among the ASC’s top-10. Instead Ozarks lost its final seven matches and

D Monica Seiler tive,” said Drotar. “Mary and Codie are both healthy. I think whoever wins the goalkeeper position will be solid. And having Morgan O’Neil back in the field is almost like getting a new player. When we had to pull Morgan off the field last year it gave us less flexibility.” Eoff posted a 3.56 goals against average and recorded 46 saves. Playing in front of Ozarks’ goalkeeper will be another one of the team’s strengths. The defensive line will be headlined by All-

settled in a four-way tie for thirteenth. A pair of goalkeepers on Ozarks’ roster could turn the team’s fortunes and improve the team’s goal differential. Mary Eoff started the first five matches of the 2011 season before suffering a seasonending injury. Codie Freeman suffered a season-ending injury before even entering her first collegiate match. Now, Drotar believes this is one of the team’s strengths. “The goalkeeper position is very posi-

5

Conference selection Monica Seiler. “Our defensive line and midfield line are very solid this year,” said Drotar. “I think we have some choices this year that we haven’t had since I’ve been here. We could have a variety of different combinations out there.” Seiler started in 17 matches and spearheaded the team’s defensive efforts. “Monica is confident and she is poised for another good year,” said Drotar. “She is a tough, physical defender. She is fast and also gives us the ability to attack out of the back.” Seiler will likely be joined in the back by sophomores Brooke Tralmer and Scotti-Lynn Burnside. “Brooke had a solid year,” said Drotar. “She is ready as a leader in the back line with Monica. Scotti-Lynn has changed as a player and could play back there. We could fill in with freshmen Haley Gilliam, Hannah Carter or Nena Evans. The center midfielders include Morgan and Lauren Gilby. Kanisha Eckart will give them a run for their money. Morgan is a leader and the captain of the team. I think physically she is ready to have a good year.” The Lady Eagles return only two players who scored goals last season. This is a cause for concern, but Drotar isn’t overly worried. MaKenna Piha and Gilby each recorded one goal during their freshmen

> > 2012 Preview campaign. “We will have to learn to score goals by committee,” said Drotar. “I don’t think it will be just one single player that is scoring a lot of goals, but rather several players. I think Kristen Callahan, MaKenna and Lauren could score some goals.” Piha tied for the team-lead in assists with three while Gilby had an assist and five shots on goal. “I think Lauren is ready to step up and have a big year,” said Drotar. “Last year she filled in at a variety of spots. She is a feisty player and a smart player. I do think she will have a really big year either as a forward MF Morgan O’Neil or center midfielder.” Drotar feels his freshmen class will add plenty of skills on the pitch. “Several of our freshmen have very good technical skills,” he said. “We also have three freshmen that have very good speed and that is something that

will make us more dynamic.” Even with the team’s youthfulness, Drotar believes his squad can be more competitive than in past years, despite the rigors of the ASC. “This could be a year where we could be right in the mix,” he said. “The gap has narrowed. We are a big step ahead of where we were last year. We will have to see which of our girls step up.”

> > 2011 Season Review Seiler, Cannon Named All-Conference

Team Receives NSCAA Academic Award

Freshmen Class Makes Quick Impact

Williams Finishes Among Career Leaders

Sophomore defender Monica Seiler and freshman forward Alex Cannon were named American Southwest All-Conference after a vote of the league’s head coaches. Seiler, from Rogers, made the All-ASC Honorable Mention Team after starting in 17 matches. The 5-foot-8 Seiler spearheaded Ozarks defense all season in the back as Seiler a defensive specialist. Cannon, from Chattanooga, Tenn., was named to the All-ASC Third Team. The 5-foot-7 Cannon was among the most productive players in the ASC as a freshman. She ranked sixth in the ASC in shots (68) and eighth in shots per game (3.58). She led the team in goals (9), Cannon points (19) and game-winning goals (2). She opened her college career with three goals against Central Baptist College. She later had a two-goal performance against Louisiana College.

The 2011 women’s soccer team was honored with the prestigious Team Academic Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). The NSCAA Team Academic Award is presented to those teams with a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average for the 2010-2011 academic year. Under Head Coach Bryan Drotar, Ozarks posted a 3.37 team gpa to receive the distinction. It marks the fourth time the women’s soccer program has received the honor. Institutions from NCAA Division I, II and III, and NAIA are eligible for the honor.

A number of freshmen made an immediate impact on the 2011 Lady Eagles team. Head Coach Bryan Drotar hauled in one of the most talented first-year classes in program history. The freshmen class consisted of defender Scotti-Lynn Burnside, midfielder Kristen Callahan, forward Alex Cannon, goalkeeper Mary Eoff, goalkeeper Codie Freeman, forward Lauren Gilby, midfielder Emily Gorham, defender Stephanie Hiatt, midfielder MaKenna Piha, defender Jennifer Scott and defender Brooke Gilby Tralmer. The freshmen class accounted for 92 percent of the team’s goal production. Nine of the freshmen made at least one start during the season. Cannon was named All-Conference after leading the team in goals (9), points (19), game-winning goals (2) and shots (68).

Senior defender Kaitlyn Williams finished her career among the program leaders in games played and games started. The four-year letterwinner from Clarksville played in 72 games from 2008-11, while starting in 68 during that span. Williams was just one match shy of tying for the career-lead in games played and two from tying Emalee Pearson’s all-time games started mark of 70. Williams was on track to break both records before suffering an injury, ending the 2011 season starting in 15 matches. Williams finished her career with 25 shots, one goal and two assists. Williams was a threetime member of the ASC All-Academic Team for women’s soccer and a twotime member of the ASC All-Academic Team for sports information.

American Southwest Conference > > The American Southwest Conference, one of the largest intercollegiate athletic conferences in NCAA Division III, will celebrate its 17th championship season of competition with the 2012-2013 academic year. Founded in May 1996 to provide a structure for intercollegiate athletics among the member institutions, the American Southwest Conference includes former members of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) and other institutions outside the Texas border. From the eight founding institutions to today’s present group of 14 college and universities, the ASC encompasses institutions sharing similar educational and athletic philosophies. Spreading across four states — Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi — the ASC offers student-athletes competition in 16 sports with opportunity for advancement in both conference and NCAA Division III championships. ASC championships are conducted in 16 sports (8 men, 8 women). Men’s championships are offered in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and track and field. Women’s championships are offered in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field and volleyball.
