Welcome It is with great pride that I welcome you to Henzells Central Sunshine Coast and share my story from beginning to today ‌ I was born and bred in Bundaberg, Queensland and am the fourth generation of sugar industry pioneers and founders of the Fairymead Sugar Company later to become the cornerstone of the Bundaberg Sugar Company. My brothers and I enjoyed growing up in the historic Fairymead House built by my great grandfather Ernest Young. In 1988 the home was given to the City of Bundaberg as a bicentennial gift and is now located in the Bundaberg Botanic Gardens. I was educated at The Anglican Church Grammar School (Churchie) and Bundaberg High School. After school I studied and trained as an engineering surveyor and worked in the central Queensland Coal fields for Leighton Contractors. At the age of 24 I left for the UK, and spent the next three years travelling around the world. I worked as a surveyor in the UK, a tour leader in Europe, and on charter boats in the Caribbean and California.

In 1982 I commenced my real estate career by joining the Ray White office at Alexandra Headland. In 1985 I became a partner in the office and held the franchise for Ray White on the Central Sunshine Coast for 24 years. During that time I was involved with Ray White offices at Mooloolaba, Maroochydore, Buderim, Kawana Waters, Wurtulla, Caloundra, Coolum and Commercial Sunshine Coast. I was awarded "Auctioneer of Excellence" and the prestigious" Max White" award from the Ray White group. The former is awarded to one person each year for their outstanding contribution to the Ray White Group.

I also have an Associate Diploma of Business (Real Estate Valuation) Striving for further challenges, in October 2009, business partner Kevin Annetts & I chose to combine our successful business with the well known real estate company Henzells Agency which has been providing successful real estate service on the Sunshine Coast since 1935. Just one year later, Henzells Buderim was born, with business partner Geoff Ryan.

The Henzells Agency story... For generations, Henzells Agency has been a major influence in shaping the landscape of Caloundra and the broader Sunshine Coast both in its physical appearance and the lifestyle on offer. The Henzells name continues to grow in the region, with the longstanding Caloundra office being joined by Henzells Mooloolaba, Henzells Buderim and most recently, Henzells Rural. The Henzells story began in 1935 when founding forefather Roy Henzell established the Farlow and Henzell real estate agency in partnership with Bill Farlow, a shopkeeper at Kings Beach who rented out accommodation and sold real estate to supplement his primary business.

Roy took the helm of the family business in 1984 when his father Bevan died. He was 29 years old and ran the family business in partnership with his mother Judy Henzell until 1990 when he invited long-time friend Garry Waters to join as a partner and implement the development of Pelican Waters. The Pelican Waters Development, however, is just one part of Henzells Agency. Under the direction of partners Roy and Garry the business has transformed into a one-stop-shop for all property needs. Henzells has expanded its traditional business of general real estate and project management to include an advertising agency, finance arm and development division.

Roy was a keen fisherman and would often holiday in Caloundra with his family. Opening the agency was an opportunity for the family to permanently relocate from Brisbane. Roy was an accountant and would do local tax accounts and buy, sell and rent property while his wife Maysie Mines performed the clerical work.

Today Henzells holiday letting, permanent letting, commercial leasing and commercial sales dominate the Caloundra market and are spreading across the Sunshine Coast.

In 1946, Roy purchased 810 hectares of land on the coast of Caloundra which would later become the master planned Pelican Waters community. He acquired the land for 2000 English Pounds with development in mind, however he could never have imagined the success story it would become.

The development team has produced projects such as the 520 lot Ridgehaven Estate, The Jetty Apartments, The Abbey Villas, Beach Cove and Ocean Ridge Estate in addition to Pelican Waters, which has settled over 2000 allotments.

Roy Henzell junior, the grandson of Roy Henzell, along with partner Garry Waters and the development team continue to build on the dream and the family legacy. "When my grandad purchased the land he definitely saw a future in the development of the land, though not to the extent that Pelican Waters is now," Roy said. "He didn't envisage the canals, waterways and parks that we have today, his early plans were probably more in line with conventional subdivisions with estate after estate." Roy Henzell junior's dad, Bevan Henzell, took over Pelican Waters when Roy was eight years old and came up with an idea that revolutionised the master planned community. "When my father took over, he had the idea of a main canal," Roy said. "From that one idea, we have since developed lakes, waterways, and a lock and weir system.''

Henzells has also developed or marketed much of Caloundra's business district such as Henzells Plaza, Caloundra City Centre, Centrepoint and Fox and the Mildwaters building.

Planning is underway for the final 1750 tenements of Pelican Waters plus a marina and town centre. Henzells also has a land holding at Mt Sippy that's been surveyed seven feet higher than Buderim. "Our people are a key part of our future success and our core asset," Garry said. "We are fostering a sense of custodianship for the next 75 years so that our people, being clients and staff, will have a vehicle which will carry their goals and aspirations." Generations of clients, too, have built a relationship with the company. "We have clients whose grandparents booked holidays with Henzells and who are now bringing their grandchildren to continue the tradition," Garry said. "We are proud of the role Henzells Agency has played in the development of one of Australia's top seaside destinations."
