WELCOME PRESIDENT’S INTRODUCTION On behalf of the Sunshine Coast District Bowls Association and all of our member clubs, we welcome all bowlers and visitors to our 2017 Winter Bowls Carnival.

This will be the 55th year our Carnival has been running

and last year we exceeded all records for participation and competition and we expect this year to be even better.

We continue to be impressed by the calibre of bowlers playing in these events which are designed to cater for bowlers of all

levels so that the chances of doing well are enhanced as much

as possible. We are continually trying different events based on

feedback from those who participate; for example, this year, we

We are grateful to our many sponsors, particularly our major

We look forward to catching up with those who are returning this year and to new entrants and visitors. As you may have

experienced last year, many of the events filled quickly and we encourage you to register your interest as early as possible.

We wish you every success and enjoyment during the carnival season.

Welcome to the Sunshine Coast A Naturally refreshing destination

From the spectacular coloured sand cliffs in the north, to the iconic Glass House Mountains in the south, the Sunshine Coast is a very special, natural place. On the Sunshine Coast, the only thing more refreshing than the water is the lifestyle. With its endless beaches, lush rainforests and easy smiles, it’s a place where you feel like a local from the moment you arrive, a place where you can forget everything - and that feeling is unforgettable. From the first game played in the region dating back to 1936, the Sunshine Coast is one of Queensland’s most popular bowling destinations. Our popular haven for lawn bowlers offers facilities and venues across the Coast, and a

range of social and competitive carnivals to appeal to beginners and competitive bowlers alike. Whether it’s a trip to the Sunshine Coast with fellow members from your local club, a group of friends, a loved one, or your family; it’s not only a hub for bowls lovers but it also offers plenty to see and do as a destination. It is home to an endless number of exceptional attractions, activities and events.

The Sunshine Coast offers a unique and relaxed coastal experience Take some time out from the greens and... • enter shopping heaven at one of our local, hinterland or seaside markets • visit the Queensland Garden Expo on July 8-10 • hire a boat or take a cruise and explore the Maroochy River or the Pumicestone Passage Marine Park to experience the beauty and wildlife • explore the beautiful Maroochy Botanic Gardens, set on 112 hectares off the Tanawha Tourist Drive, and the Maleny Botanic Gardens & Bird World, which are uniquely layered gardens with spectacular Glass House Mountain views

• pull on some fancy socks and tee off out at one of 18 golf courses in the region • learn new skills at one of the many cooking schools throughout the region • don’t forget to share your Sunshine Coast experienecs, and when you use social media hastag #visitsunshinecoast Contact Sunshine Coast Visitor Information Centres on freecall 1800 644 969, or for a range of accommodation offerings and attractions, go to visitsunshinecoast.com.

Hinterland Mixed Fours on the Sunshine Coast

Nambour

Mapleton

With a comfortable blend of shopping, business, health, education, events and entertainment, Nambour offers a laidback lifestyle with a strong community focus. As a town, Nambour is the backbone of the Coast, the quiet achiever, going about its business without fanfare. Nambour has two bowling clubs, Nambour Heights and Nambour.

Situated in the heart of the Sunshine Coast hinterland, the scenic drive to Mapleton from Maleny, taking in Montville and Flaxton, is one of the most stunning on the Sunshine Coast. Throughout this beautiful district, art and craft galleries abound, along with potteries, antique shops and museums.

Yandina

Set in a mosaic of avocado, custard apples and pawpaw orchards, orange groves, and banana plantations, Palmwoods is an arts and craft hub only a few kilometres south of Nambour. It’s within comfortable driving distance of Buderim and the charming Blackall Range villages of Maleny, Montville and Mapleton.

This is the famous ‘Ginger Town’ of the Sunshine Coast hinterland, which boasts some of the most beautiful country in Queensland. Yandina lies just to the north of Nambour, and is extremely rich in natural rainforest parks and reserves.

Woombye Woombye used to be called ‘Cobb’s Camp’ due to the fact that it was a staging post for the Cobb & Co coaches. Home to luscious sub-tropical fruits, and the popular macadamia nut, it is the site of a thriving farmers’ market.

GOLDEN OLDIES

WORLD LAWN BOWLS FESTIVAL Bowlers of all abilities from competitive to social are warmly invited to be part of the month long Golden Oldies Sports Celebration in Christchurch. The inaugural Golden Oldies World Lawn Bowls Festival will be a week of Bowls, fun and friendship played at leading Christchurch clubs such as Burnside and Fendalton. The programme includes 4 days of play in Fours and Pairs and Singles. Bowlers who enter as a single will be made up into teams to further enhance the enjoyment. Golden Oldies is not just about those who play the game but also their partners who are part and parcel of the success of the concept. And it’s not all about bowls, the optional midweek picnic outing is always a highlight as are the pretournament get together and the end of tournament farewell dinner. There optional “Picnic Day” will see Golden Oldies participants transported to Hanmer Springs for an enjoyable day of superb Canterbury food and beverages. Teams will enjoy local entertainment and some interesting, fun and memorable activities. At the conclusion of a great day out in wonderful Hanmer Springs, teams will be transferred back to their accommodation and the chance to enjoy an evening

at one of Christchurch’s many excellent restaurants or bars including the Festival Entertainment HQ at the Christchurch Casino. Lawn Bowls will join the Golden Oldies fraternity at the Christchurch Casino Golden Oldies Sports Celebration 2018. It is a sport that lends itself ideally to the Golden Oldies ideal of ‘Fun, Friendship and Fraternity’ in sport. It’s all about enjoyment of playing and meeting people during and after games. Some may want to test their skills in a more competitive environment but those who are wanting to play in the ‘social’ category will be catered for as well. One of the cornerstones of the Golden Oldies movement, which had its origins in New Zealand in 1979 when the first Golden Oldies rugby festival was held, the brainchild of New Zealand rugby identity Tom Johnson, is the opportunity it offers to make lasting friendships by meeting and playing with people from all around New Zealand and the world. Golden Oldies events have been held all around the world including the United States, Britain, the West Indies, Australia, Africa and South America. The Golden Oldies catchphrase is “Let the Love of the Game Take You Places.” So get your mates, friends and partners together and join us in Christchurch for a week of Fun, Friendship and Fraternity.
