WELCOME President’s Introduction On behalf of the Sunshine Coast District Bowls Association and all of our member clubs, we welcome all bowlers and visitors to our 2020 Winter Bowls Carnival. This will be the 58th year our Carnival has been running and last year we exceeded all records for participation and competition and we expect this year to be even better. A special mention of our New Zealand visitors who are a significant group in our carnival. We continue to be impressed by the calibre of bowlers playing in these events, which are designed to cater for bowlers of all levels so that the chances of doing well are enhanced as much as possible. We are continually trying different events based on feedback from those who participate and this is reflected in the number of events and combinations. You will not only be able to play bowls but, also have the time and opportunity to visit the many places of interest within our region. The Sunshine Coast Clubs which host our Carnival events are among the best in Queensland and their greens should be at their

finest during the carnival season. We encourage you to read up on all the competitions in our booklet and on the website, particularly those run by our member clubs. We are grateful to our many sponsors, particularly our major sponsor ‘The Sunshine Coast Council’, the Maroochy RSL, as well as all the others mentioned in this booklet. We look forward to catching up with those who are returning this year and to new entrants and visitors. As you may have experienced last year, many of the events filled very quickly and we encourage you to register your interest as early as possible. We wish you every success and enjoyment during the carnival season. Geoff Osborne President SCDMBA

Mayoral Message On behalf of the Sunshine Coast Council, I would like to welcome all bowlers, their families and friends from across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific to the 58th Annual Sunshine Coast Winter Bowls Carnival. For many years now, the Winter Carnival has been a highlight of our event calendar, and our Council is proud to sponsor and host such a popular and well-established event in our healthy, smart, creative region. For those who are returning, I’m sure you will notice the Sunshine Coast continues to evolve year on year, creating new opportunities for people to holiday, to study and to live and work. Hopefully you will have some time to have a look around our region and enjoy everything we have to offer – from our pristine beaches, our beautiful hinterland, our entertainment venues, shopping centres as well as enjoy some of the finest cuisine available. The Sunshine Coast’s beautiful winter weather is the perfect setting for another memorable celebration of bowls, great competition and friendship. 2

With best regards Mark Jamieson MAYOR

Flavours of the Sunshine Coast

The Sunshine Coast region delights visitors with an appetising variety of producers, waterfront and hinterland restaurants, wineries, breweries, food festivals, cooking schools and farmers markets.

Eat like a local

Craft Beer Scene

Get a real taste of local produce with the Sunshine Coast market scene. Eumundi heads the list of market destinations on the Sunshine Coast, with the whole town revolving around the market held every Wednesday and Saturday. Other outstanding foodie markets include Nights on Ocean St, Kawana Farmers Market, Yandina Market, Cotton Tree Market and Caloundra Street Fair, which is always vibrant and buzzing with delicious, local produce.

Now considered amongst the best in Australia, the Coast’s craft breweries, found in picturesque locations along the coast and in the hinterland, have become attractions. The region now boasts 12 innovators who brew on site including the award-winning Moffat Beach Brewing Co, Brouhaha Brewery, Macleod Brewing Co and Sunshine Coast Brewery as well as the renowned Eumundi Brewery and Your Mates Brewing Co.

Fresh Seafood

The coast’s brewers have built close relationships with local farmers, recycling spent grain for cattle, and sourcing local fruit and produce for distinctive seasonal beers. Why not take a craft beer brewery tour of the Sunshine Coast while you are here?

Mooloolaba is the biggest swordfish port in Australia and is one of the busiest seafood ports on the eastern seaboard. The wharf is a hive of daily activity with trawlers bringing in boatloads of swordfish, the famous Mooloolaba prawns, lobsters and spanner crabs. The best place to find ‘the catch of the day’ is on Parkyn Parade in Mooloolaba, where you’ll find fresh seafood markets. Keen to taste the local fare for yourself? Try local fine dining restaurants Pier 33, Spice Bar, Augello’s and Backlane Tapas & Wine Bar, and casual venues like The Dock, Mooloolaba Surf Club, Taps, who all serve up delicious mouth-watering local seafood dishes.
