the area in his travel diary in 1844. The first European settlement followed in the wake of the Gympie gold rush of 1867. A track linking Maleny to Landsborough was cut in 1880.

Located high in the Blackall Range, about 30 kilometres south west of Caloundra, Maleny is renowned for its lush environs and numerous scenic spots.

An official proclamation of Maleny as a town occurred in 1891. The Maleny Butter Factory began operation in 1904. Maleny was a timber town until the early 1920s, and then was a centre of dairy production and fruit growing.

The name Maleny is probably derived from the parish name, which in turn is possibly derived from the Scottish place name Malleny, a village in Midlothian, Scotland. The area around Maleny was originally populated by the Nalbo and the Dallambara — two aboriginal tribes of the Gubbi Gubbi language group. The area was known for its bunya feasts which happened every third year when the giant bunya tree was in fruit. The first European to document Maleny was the explorer Ludwig Leichhardt who describes

Although a campaign to have a police station in the town was started in the 1920s, it wasn't until 1952 that permission to convert a house into the current police station and residence was granted. Maleny Post Office opened by February 1906 (a receiving office had been open from 1889). On 15 August 1995, the Queensland Governor Leneen Forde dedicated the Maleny War Memorial. The Maleny Library was opened in 1998 with a major refurbishment in 2012.

Maleny is home to a large number of cooperative enterprises. There are art galleries, health food and organic produce stores, cafĂŠs, the Maleny Credit Union, a thriving business centre, rural settlements, a community golf course, alternative schools, alternative medical treatment centres, organic farms, intentional communities including the Crystal Waters Permaculture Village in nearby Conondale and the Fountainhead organic retreat and education centre (whose founder received a certificate from Senator Mark Furner for his work in helping those with depression and anxiety). How to plan your house sale Thinking about selling but not sure where to start? Luckily most real estate professionals are helpful, service-focused people and if you find the right one, they’ll guide you through the process, step by step. The Sunshine Coast LGA house market is going gangbusters at the moment. The median house price grew 6.5 per cent over the past year, to June 2018, to reach $575,000. The vacancy rate is tight, at 2 per cent. Apartments are also charging ahead, growing 4 per cent over the past year to a median of $415,000. Essentially it’s a great time to capitalise on the market movement and put your property on the market. Your first call is always to three well-known sales professionals who operate in your area. You’re looking for someone who knows every house in every street in your suburb because that’s the person who will know every buyer actively looking right now and what they’re willing to pay. Meet with three agents. Get their appraisals. Make sure when you show them through your property that you highlight all the features that may not be readily obvious such as solar panels, any recent plumbing repair work you may have had done, or recent upgrades. These agents will also be able to guide you on any work you may need to consider in order to improve the achievable sale price. Some agents will bring a summary of comparable sales with them to the appraisal, while others will wait until after they’ve seen your property to present you with recent similar

sales and give you an indication of where your property sits within that list. Choose your agent based on the meetings and their experience and credentials. Are they a member of the REIQ? This membership gives them access to all the latest data and information on the market. Membership also ensures they have maintained their professional development as the REIQ requires its members to complete 100 points of continuing professional development every year. This is how you know the agent takes their education seriously and maintains their knowledge. Once you have made your choice, you’ll be asked to complete a Form 6 Appointment form. From there, it’s a matter of deciding what your
