The prospect of purchasing your very first home is an exciting one, but even more so when you decide to buy with your partner.

However, what is rarely discussed are the pitfalls of the purchasing process, like quarrels about your budget or discovering your wants and needs are vastly different. Regardless, you shouldn’t let these arguments stand in the way of finding your dream home – nor should they be cause for tension in your relationship. The following tips will help abate major arguments when house-hunting with your significant other.

> Discuss your budget Before you even begin to search for a house or unit with your partner, you need to sit down and establish how much you’re both willing to spend. If you are both struggling to settle on a ball-park figure, consider seeking the services of a mortgage broker or financial planner. Using a financial expert as the mediator will not only ensure that you settle on a reasonable budget for both of your fiscal positions, but will prevent unnecessary arguments when one party wants to spend beyond their means.

> Establish your ‘non-negotiables’ Now that you and your partner have established a price range you’re both comfortable with, it’s time to work out what your non-negotiable wants and needs are. It’s best to do this separately, to avoid either party being swayed by the other’s opinion. Some of these wants and needs may include,
