COME AND JOIN THE

PARTY!

Welcome and Haere Mai to the celebration of the 60th Birthday of the Sunshine Coast Winter Bowls Carnival in July 2024. If you are coming back again you know what to expect and we will endeavour to make your return visit even better than before. If this is your first time visiting our wonderful region, we know that you will be delighted by the experience. We have a carnival of Lawn Bowls spread over 15 days with a range of games to challenge you and a wide variety of venues on the Coast and the nearby Hinterland to delight your senses. Our format is designed to reward you even if you win only one game but there are significant rewards if you are an accomplished bowler. I take this opportunity to thank our generous sponsors including the Sunshine Coast Regional Council, Maroochy RSL Club, and Taylor Bowls for their ongoing support. I also acknowledge the host Clubs and their individual sponsors who not only support our events but the many games before and immediately after our Winter Carnival. Last year we had over 1200 entries to our events and many were filled to capacity. We expect that this will increase this year so get your entries in early to avoid disappointment, register your interest now. Our feature event this year is an “over the ditch” challenge of Australia versus New Zealand. This day of Open Fours to be held at the scenic Coolum Beach Club on Wednesday 10th July 2024 was a huge success last year but will be bigger and better this year as the Kiwis seek their revenge. Whilst you are here, I encourage you to take the opportunity to visit the many tourist attractions that are available within the immediate area and I look forward to meeting you during your visit.

I’d like to extend a very warm welcome to everyone participating in or supporting the 60th annual Sunshine Coast Winter Bowls Carnival. A highlight on our events calendar, Sunshine Coast Council is pleased to sponsor such a popular event in our healthy, smart, creative region. The diversity of our natural attractions is what makes our region so special and a drawcard to explore. For those visiting the Sunshine Coast, whether it is your first time or a return visit, I hope you take the time to enjoy the wide range of experiences, events and destinations our region has to offer. From coastline to farmland, the Sunshine Coast’s unique geographic location within a UNESCO Biosphere corridor creates a recipe for success. Our volcanically rich terrain dishes up nutrient dense produce and an abundance of culinary experiences which are just waiting to be devoured during your stay. We are Queensland’s Sunshine Pantry with plenty of offerings of local produce, craft beer, and fine cuisines to tempt your tastebuds. Our beautiful winter weather is the perfect setting for another memorable celebration of bowls, full of great competition and friendship. On behalf of our Sunshine Coast Council, I wish the best of luck to all.

Regards

With best regards,

Graham Tanis Chairperson Sunshine Coast Winter Bowls Carnival.

Councillor Jason O’pray Economy Portfolio

A Rich Club History

Over 70 Years in the Community

The Club first began in 1949 when a group of locals, who had been playing bowls at Alf Sprigget’s private rink on Poinciana Avenue, decided there was a need for a Bowling Club to be established. Some 40 men agreed to act as guarantors for a bank loan to finance the purchase of suitable land and establish a bowling green.

Throughout our rich history two more greens have been added, the Clubhouse extended, then subsequently demolished, to be replaced with the present spacious building in 1989.

Land was purchased for 316 Pounds 18 Shillings and presented a real challenge - it was swampy, had a gully running through it and a mangrove creek on its eastern boundary. After many hours of labour, clearing the site, some 1200 cubic yards of fill was obtained to fill the gully and build up the green foundation. Town water was not available so several wells were sunk to obtain the necessary water for maintaining the green.

Over the decades the club has produced its share of champion bowlers in the club, local and state scene. But more importantly, it has provided both bowling and social activities for club members, visiting bowlers and members of the wider Noosa community. Now boasting more than 1700 social and bowling members we look forward to welcoming past, present and future members to experience what is now the Noosa Lawns Club home of the Tewantin Bowls Club.

The first clubhouse was but a small cottage about the size of a living room and some distance from this was the outside dunny.

Congratulations to the Sunshine Coast District Bowls Association on celebrating their 60th anniversary with another highly successful Winter Carnival. The new format introduced by Barry Sullivan this year was greatly appreciated by all visitors and we look forward to a similar format for the 2024 year. 2023 was the 19th year that we have been coming to the Sunshine Coast. The primary Ian & Sandra Coombe, Mairangi Bay NZ motivation for us to continue coming every year has been the camaraderie of the bowls community & the excellent tournament framework that exists around the carnival along with the wonderful weather. Particular thanks to Barry Sullivan who as always, ran an excellent tournament. Barry’s organizational skills and his willingness to find games for people in various tournaments made the Carnival the success it was. We plan to continue to return for many years to come & encourage our kiwi bowling friends to join us. LIFEST YLE BUYERS AGENCY & VENDOR ADVOCACY PROUDLY SPONSORING

We are from Bunbury, which is 2 hours south of Perth in Western Australia. In 2010 friends of ours were booked with another couple, but as they were unable to come, we went in their place and stayed for two weeks, playing bowls at the Swan Bowling club. This started our love affair with the Sunshine Coast. We enjoyed ourselves immensely and have been going ever since (with the exemption of the covid year). The weather and lifestyle on the Sunshine Coast is fantastic and the friendships we have formed have added to its appeal. (Special mention to Barry and Jan Sullivan whose friendship has been invaluable over the 13 years. They have been involved in the running of the main event – Sunshine Coast Carnival for at least this amount of time.) Our time there has increased to nearly 3 mths, playing bowls at various clubs in the Sunshine Coast District, sightseeing from the Glass House Mountains through Nambour and Eumundi up to Gympie and back to Noosa all way down to Pelican Waters. Eating places are plentiful and of a high standard with many within walking distance. If public transport is need then we only have to walk 50m to catch a bus going into town or south to places like Mooloolaba, and Caloundra Another plus for us is Pokies at the RSL’s, Surf clubs and Bowling Clubs. As we stay in Cotton Tree our local haunts are Maroochy RSL, Maroochy Bowls Club and Maroochy Surf Club. These are all within walking distance and if not sightseeing or playing bowls we can be found at one of these venues. To which I would like to add that we are made to feel very welcome at all places. Weather, Bowls, Friendships, Hospitality, Safety – YEAH THE SUNSHINE COAST Anne and Geoff Whyatt - Shona Glassey and Neville Woods

Like many bowlers from down south, we travel north for the winter and have done so for the past 25 years. Our first trip was in 1998 arriving at Maroochydore and seeking out a bowls club that we could call home, we settled on the Swan Bowls Club. Barry Sullivan ran a bowls carnival called the Prelude that ran for a couple of weeks. This carnival attracted many competitive bowlers, not only were they good bowlers they were good people. The Sunshine Coast Carnival followed the Prelude with a great couple of weeks of tournament bowls, attracting so many people from all over Australia and New Zealand. It was an organizers nightmare to manage so many competitors, but they always seemed to get things right and the games went off without a hitch. As the years roll on the Carnival is still running with Barry is back as the organizer. Friendships that have been formed still exist and I know that we look forward every year to getting back to our second home, Maroochydore, to playing in the Bowls Carnival and meeting up with old friends and forming new friendships. Lyn & Peter Thomas from Bundoora Bowling Club Melbourne.
