56th Sunshine Coast Carnival 2018
WINTER BOWLS Bowl in the Sunshine from the Hinterland to the Coast
visitsunshinecoast.com
WELCOME President’s Introduction On behalf of the Sunshine Coast District Bowls Association and all of our member clubs, we welcome all bowlers and visitors to our 2018 Winter Bowls Carnival. This will be the 56th year our Carnival has been running and last year we exceeded all records for participation and competition and we expect this year to be even better. We continue to be impressed by the calibre of bowlers playing in these events which are designed to cater for bowlers of all levels so that the chances of doing well are enhanced as much as possible. We are continually trying different events based on feedback from those who participate; for example, this year, we will have six extra events, some being half day’s, so that you are able to not only enjoy your bowls but also have the time and opportunity to visit the many places of interest within our region. The Sunshine Coast Clubs’ which host our Carnival events are among the best in Queensland and their greens should be at their
finest during the carnival season. We encourage you to read up on all the competitions in our booklet and on the website, particularly those run by our member clubs. We are grateful to our many sponsors, particularly our major sponsor ‘The Sunshine Coast Council’, the Maroochy RSL, as well as all the others mentioned in this booklet. We look forward to catching up with those who are returning this year and to new entrants and visitors. As you may have experienced last year, many of the events filled very quickly and we encourage you to register your interest as early as possible. We wish you every success and enjoyment during the carnival season. Geoff Osborne President SCDMBA
Mayoral Message I would like to extend a very warm welcome to competitors and spectators from across Australia and New Zealand who are joining us on our beautiful Sunshine Coast for the 2018 Sunshine Coast Winter Bowls Carnival. We have an enviable reputation as a high-value destination for hosting major sporting and entertainment events and we are proud to host such a popular event as the Carnival. I’m sure those of you who have been here before can’t wait to play again at many of the bowls clubs in our region. For the first-timers to the Sunshine Coast, I’m confident that you are going to enjoy a fantastic experience – and will want to return again. Hopefully you will have some time to have a look around the Sunshine Coast and enjoy our pristine beaches, our wonderful
hinterland, our entertainment venues and bowls clubs as well as some of the finest cuisine and shopping in the nation. In closing, may I wish the very best of luck to all competitors in the 2018 Sunshine Coast Winter Bowls Carnival. With best regards
Mayor Mark Jamieson
Day trips on the Sunshine Coast Queensland Garden Expo, Nambour
From the hinterland’s rolling hills to the sparkling beaches that hug the coastline, there’s so much to see on the Sunshine Coast. Here is a list of day trips to enjoy. Art galleries
Immersive encounters
Often called the creative heart of the region, the Sunshine Coast Hinterland is a hub of quality art galleries and studios featuring works from established and emerging artists. Visit Illume Creations to view stunning glass sculptures and vases from local hot glass artist, Tina Cooper; or Montville Art Gallery, housed in a gorgeous 1920s Queenslander, which showcases works from more than 30 award winning artists. Don’t miss Secrets on the Lake Gallery – beautifully designed with magical views of Lake Baroon. Art on Cairncross is also a fine art gallery displaying original art by Australian artists, complimented by a range of 3D art from glass, porcelain, bronze and ceramics.
The Sunshine Coast is home to wow moments and authentic experiences for those that are adventurous and are young at heart. With animal encounters available at Australia Zoo, Wildlife HQ, Sea Life Sunshine Coast and the Maleny Botanic Gardens and Bird World, the Sunshine Coast has an abundance of wildlife to become closer acquainted to. Shop ‘til you drop The Sunshine Coast ranks as one of the top market destinations in Australia. From the Original Eumundi Markets in the north to the Caloundra Street Fair in the south, perusing through the stalls is a great way to glean a sense of the region’s character. The region also has the Sunshine Plaza and Kawana Shoppingworld which have a diverse variety of speciality stores for a convenient and friendly shopping experience.
The cheese circuit With rich pastures, a warm climate and shady hills, the Sunshine Coast has been one of the country’s most renowned dairy producers since cattle were first introduced to the region. Maleny Dairies has kept the flag flying with its high-quality output, and awardwinning products like milk, yoghurt and ice cream which can be tasted and bought at the farm shop, as well as at countless outlets. Once you’ve enjoyed those goodies, head to Maleny Cheese to see their cheesemakers in action and enjoy tastings in the café
and shop. Purchase outstanding hard and soft cheeses, along with products from the award-winning yoghurt range. Make time to pop into Maleny Food Co and indulge in the fromagerie, featuring more than 200 cheeses from Australia and around the world, and their award-winning gelato. Not to be missed events The annual Winter Bowls Carnival is one of the most popular events, but while in the region the Queensland Garden Expo is a must-see for seasoned green thumbs and novice gardeners, with three days of demonstrations, workshops and interactive lectures. In addition to Downunder Beachfest, which celebrates car buffs and old school motor relics, the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show showcases the extraordinary diversity of the Sunshine Coast. These events celebrate the history of the region and promote the local industries.

Mooloolaba Beach
Serenity Falls, Buderim
Walks and hikes on the Sunshine Coast The Sunshine Coast is home to some of the most spectacular views best explored on walks and trails, the only thing to decide, is where to first. Buderim Forest Park Reserve
Mooloolaba Esplanade
Buderim Forest Park is a 45 hectare haven of tranquility and is a short trip inland from the coast. With its towering trees, meandering tracks and stunning waterfall, this sub-tropical oasis is a paradise for nature lovers and photographers. Serenity Falls, also known as Buderim Falls, is a wonderful place to visit at any time of year, and looks particularly spectacular after rainfall when the waters cascade down the rock face in to the waterhole below. The 600 metre walkway from Lindsay Road will take you on a picturesque forest ramble along the banks of Martins Creek’s cascading waters.
Coastal walks are a morning ritual for locals on the Sunshine Coast, so rise early before hitting the bowling greens. Watch the dawn break over Mooloolaba Beach as you head towards Alexandra Headland on an easy 20-minute stroll which arrives at one of the most beautiful spots on the Sunshine Coast. Keep walking, and you’ll arrive at Cotton Tree, where the Maroochy River meets the Indian Ocean.
Kondalilla National Park Kondalilla National Park is a cool mountain retreat in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Kondalilla, an Aboriginal word meaning ‘rushing waters’, describes this park’s waterfall during the summer wet season, where Skene Creek drops 90m into a rainforest valley. Above the falls, tall open eucalypt forest mingles with rainforest species, while a drier forest of casuarinas and grass trees grows on the western escarpment. A refuge for many species of native animals and plants, Kondalilla National Park is a popular place for birdwatchers and nature photographers, as well as bushwalkers. Discover scenic views over the waterfall, and enjoy rock pools and freshwater creeks along the park’s walking tracks.
Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve is 55 acres of subtropical rainforest overlooking the Glass House Mountains. A remnant of the rainforests that once covered the Blackall Range, the Reserve is a living museum of diverse plant and animal life. There are several tranquil walking tracks, boardwalks and viewing platforms where you can soak up the natural beauty and read information about various species. There’s also an education centre and a number of picnic tables that offer breathtaking views of the Glass House Mountains for your picnic or barbecue. Listen to the striking call of the catbird and imagine yourself back in time as you walk through this stunning patch of remnant rainforest.
Caloundra Coastal Pathway Take a stroll along the stunning Caloundra Coastal Pathway. Soak up the beauty of the region, keeping an eye out for birdlife and dolphins in the Pumicestone Passage. Check out the historical military jetty used for operations during WWII, as well as the heritage listed Kings Beach Bathing Pavilion. Remember to bring your camera, you will be itching to snap family photos featuring stellar ocean views. Coolum Boardwalk The hills overlooking Point Arkwright and Coolum Beach is a perfect hideaway. Enjoy the stunning views over Coolum’s bays and capture the ocean breeze on a beautiful afternoon stroll. Head along to Point Perry to watch for surfers as they catch barrels and if you’re lucky, spot whales from afar.
