57TH SUNSHINE COAST
WINTER BOWLS CARNIVAL 2019
Bowl in the Sunshine from the Hinterland to the Coast
visitsunshinecoast.com
WELCOME President’s Introduction On behalf of the Sunshine Coast District Bowls Association and all of our member clubs, we welcome all bowlers and visitors to our 2019 Winter Bowls Carnival. This will be the 57th year our Carnival has been running and last year we exceeded all records for participation and competition and we expect this year to be even better. A special mention of our New Zealand visitors who are a significant group in our carnival. We continue to be impressed by the calibre of bowlers’ playing in these events, which are designed to cater for bowlers of all levels so that the chances of doing well are enhanced as much as possible. We are continually trying different events based on feedback from those who participate; for example, this year, we will have extra events, some being half days, so that you are able to not only enjoy your bowls but also have the time and opportunity to visit the many places of interest within our region. The Sunshine Coast Clubs’ which host our Carnival events are among the best in Queensland and their greens should be at their
finest during the carnival season. We encourage you to read up on all the competitions in our booklet and on the website, particularly those run by our member clubs. We are grateful to our many sponsors, particularly our major sponsor ‘The Sunshine Coast Council’, the Maroochy RSL, as well as all the others mentioned in this booklet. We look forward to catching up with those who are returning this year and to new entrants and visitors. As you may have experienced last year, many of the events filled very quickly and we encourage you to register your interest as early as possible. We wish you every success and enjoyment during the carnival season. Geoff Osborne President SCDMBA
Mayoral Message On behalf of the 320,000 residents of the Sunshine Coast, I would like to welcome all bowlers and their families and friends from across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific to the Sunshine Coast for the 57th annual Sunshine Coast Winter Bowls Carnival. It should be another memorable celebration of bowls, full of great competition and friendship. For many years now, the Winter Carnival has been a highlight of our Major Events Calendar and our council is proud to be a major sponsor of such a popular and well-established event in our healthy, smart, creative region. For those who are returning to see us, I’m sure you will notice the Sunshine Coast continues to evolve year on year with a range of game changing projects creating new opportunities for people to holiday, to study and to live and work. Hopefully you will have some time to have a look around the Sunshine Coast and enjoy our pristine beaches, our wonderful
hinterland, our entertainment venues, shopping centres as well as have time to enjoy some of the finest cuisine on offer. The Sunshine Coast, bowls and great winter weather – it’s a winning combination. With best regards Mark Jamieson MAYOR

Stroll through the main street and relax with a coffee at one of the cafés before embarking on a self-guided heritage tour. From the Pumicestone Passage, with views of the Glass House Mountains to Caloundra’s stunning coastal paths and well-maintained boardwalks, daily life can unfold in a haze of fabulous breakfast, sandy beaches, scooter-happy trails and grassy picnic spots. Begin your day at the Kings Beach ocean pool and follow the well-maintained track around the Caloundra headland. Pass by Shelly Beach and enjoy the views north before heading down to Moffat Beach and over Tooway Creek before arriving at the aquatic playground of Dicky Beach.

Afterwards, meander down village main streets showcasing brilliant bookstores, and historic hotels. The Hinterland also has a thriving art scene with contemporary art galleries, local artist’s co-operatives and bodyworkers offering a range of healing therapies.

For the young at heart, see the stunning azure colours of Pumicestone Passage on a jet ski. Choose your pace, from fast to leisurely, and experience the beauty of Bribie Island and the mangroves at the backdrop of the Glass House Mountains. Or if a bird’s-eye view is more your beat, grab a seaplane over golden shorelines for a sight you won’t soon forget. And with all that activity sure to work up an appetite, the local Surf Clubs are just as spectacular. Settle in for the freshest local seafood with views right on the beach. And wash it down with one of the local award-winning craft beers from milk stouts to summer berry infused lager.
