SIMON BALLE SCHOOL WORKING ALONE ON THE PREMISES GUIDANCE Wherever possible staff should be discouraged from remaining alone on the premises. However, from time to time staff may find that they are working alone in the building. It is important that all staff consider the implications of this in order to decide whether it is appropriate and what measures are needed to ensure that staff are safe. Staff should – • • • •
Let someone know when they plan to leave and when they should be expected back Ensure that they have the appropriate emergency numbers, especially once the office has closed Question whether they really have to work in the building – could the work be carried out elsewhere Ensure that there is a well lit route out of the workplace and in the car park
All staff will need to – • • •
Try to anticipate situations where they will be alone in the building Co-operate with their line manager in carrying out a risk assessment Ensure that they comply with the requirements identified in the risk assessment
All line managers should – • • • • • •
Anticipate circumstances under which any of their staff will be working alone in a building and consider if there are any alternatives Carry out a risk assessment Take the necessary action required by the risk assessment Ensure all staff are aware of the risk assessment requirements Monitor the arrangements for compliance Regularly review the risk assessment
