During World War II, two British pilots, James and Bryan, are shot down over Germany. They know that they will be executed if captured. With an enemy patrol in pursuit, they manage to jump aboard a train reserved for senior SS soldiers wounded on the Eastern Front. In a moment of desperation, they throw two patients off the train and take their places, hoping to escape later. Instead, they end up in the Alphabet House, a mental hospital located far behind enemy lines, where German doctors subject their patients to daily rounds of shock treatments and experimental drugs. Their only hope of survival is to fake insanity until the war ends. But soon James and Bryan realize they are not the only ones in the Alphabet House feigning madness. 21

T

he Liar’s House is the debut novel by twenty-two-year-old dramaturgy student Katrine Nørregaard, and winner of the 2015 novel-writing competition run by the newspaper Politiken in collaboration with Politikens Forlag. The theme of the competition? Love in modern life, for better or worse. When Kristian dies he leaves behind a wife, daughter and granddaughter, but also a previously unknown holiday home by the fjords, which turns out to be anything but an ordinary house. The Liar’s House is a story about love across three generations, and about one family’s attempt to understand the lies of the past. Perhaps even to forgive …

Dagbladet Politiken and Politikens Forlag have previously run novelwriting competitions. In 2013 Anne-Cathrine Riebnitzsky won with her novel Slaughtered Pigs, which became a bestseller and won The Golden Laurels. In 2010 the writing duo Øbro & Tornbjerg won Politiken’s crime-novel competition for their debut novel Scream Under Water.

About the Axel Steen–series

T

he Danish producer Peter Bech from SF Studios is planning a series of feature films based on the first three books in the series about Danish police inspector Axel Steen. “Axel Steen is such a strong character so we want to start the films off by getting the audience to truly know him”, he says. The author himself is likewise very happy about this. ”I look very much forward to working with SF Films. We have the same understanding of the books’ strength and the need to build a strong and complex protagonist on film as well, and will be performed in a contemporary Copenhagen, as we know it from the Axel Steen novels; raw and unadorned and far from the picturesque

sing to let other people run his life. Fighting an eternal battle with his own demons and with those in power – both within the police force and among the city’s criminals – his intake of weed, alcohol and pills has a tendency to dominate when he’s under pressure. The

investigation, the hunt for the criminals and Steen’s chaotic private life are told in a raw, realistic and sometimes poetic tone known as ’2200 Noir’, a reference to the Nørrebro postcode. Stein’s novels have been highly praised by critics both nationally and interna-

tionally, and among other awards he has won the Danish Crime Academy’s Debutant Prize for the first installment in the series, Unrest, as well as the Booksellers’ prestigious Golden Laurel for the fourth in the series, Aisha.

200,000 books sold in Denmark picture we usually see. We aim for a big bang and action at a whole new level,” Jesper Stein continues. The script writers are the Swedish duo Maria Karlsson (who wrote the script for the film based on bestselling Jens Lapidus’ feature film Snabba Cash) and Oliver Dixon. “These two are highly skilled within the genre and very keen to get started”, Peter Bech explains. “First of all, they are curious to start researching Copenhagen for locations! Our ambition is to go for the same star quality as that of the

Bourne trilogy with the same high level of entertainment. This will be films unlike any other Danish films.” With a huge film budget, SF plans a new film in the series each year. Cast, director et al. is still to be decided.

Innocent Family

A

n Innocent Family is first and foremost the story of Frederik, an adventurer and financier who comes from idyllic Southern Funen. Since early childhood Frederik has felt misunderstood by his left-leaning parents. But how can you ever really leave something you can’t come to terms with? After a few years in London and New York, Frederik comes home to his Danish values. His father is

nothing but a shadow beside his strong, emancipated mother, while his sister has become a priest. She thinks Frederik should reflect on his family, and on the fact that no amount of money in the world can buy him the freedom he dreams of. An innocent family is a novel about how even the best intentions can have consequences.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Katrine Marie Guldager (born in 1966) is one of Denmark’s best established authors. ★★★★★ “What a talent! The Danish literature blooms strange and large flowers at the moment … Grand both in construction and execution … There are many strings and many mysteries in this imaginative and fantastic novel with an extraordinary long and disciplined tension span which is not definitively resolved until the very end. Everywhere, you feel the experienced writer who manages to maintain the artistic feel all the way through the book because of the episodes that vibrate life and feeling. The caricatures are throughout the novel so clear and sharp that you surrender yourself to their accentuation and enlargement also because they are so dense and illuminated and raised above reality, straight into the truthful insanity of poetry. ” – Nordjyske Stiftstidende

n a white lighthouse that for centuries has seen ships founder and sailors drown in the sea – a sea known for generations as the ‘Depths of Hell’ – lives a man with a peculiar secret. As he broods over his shipwrecked life, an old woman disappears from a prestigious care home in one of the country’s wealthiest districts. And this isn’t just any old woman. It is the Widow, mother to two of the nation’s most powerful men: the prime minister and the secretary of justice. The police find a number of clues in the Widow’s room that further their investigation into the missing woman, and as the evidence mounts up it becomes clear that the reason for her disappearance lies many decades in the past: something happened when her

sons were children, living on the same street as a group of five friends. One of them was the man in the lighthouse, and it emerges that what happened to him and his classmates back then is inextricably linked to the drama unfolding in the present.

“The prize-winning journalist Erik Valeur who four years ago had his breakthrough as an award-winning fiction writer with “The Seventh Child” has done it again … Apart from the highly packed and elementary tension in the book, which guarantees an excellent reading cadence and appetite, the author clearly enjoys – and with him the reader – the persiflage even when he mocks the media’s management-journalism, the psychiatrics’ feel-good movement, the hypocrisy of power and all sorts of political nonsense in the ruling classes. It’s satire of the finest kind” – Berlingske

The Seventh Child

t birth the seven children have only two things in common: They all come into the world in Maternity Ward B at the National Hospital in Copenhagen, and they are all given up for adoption. In the following months, the women who run Kongslund, the famed orphanage, find new families for the children in different parts of Denmark. They grow up without the slightest clue about their past. Many years later an anonymous letter is sent to a down-and-out journalist at a failing newspaper. The letter reveals that one of the seven children carries a secret, and someone has done everything possible to keep that secret hidden. When the story is made public, it brings explosive consequences. Could it be that for

the past fifty years the prestigious orphanage has been covering up the love affairs of wealthy and famous Danes, hiding scandalous liaisons that took place at the highest levels of society? The seven adopted children, now adults, are swept up in the search to uncover their past. At the same time, they are desperately trying to figure out which of them is the seventh child, and what could be the nature of the secret that person holds. The Seventh Child is the story of how this mystery is unraveled — and about the bond between the seven children, whose lives end up inextricably linked during the decades when the social welfare system was established in Denmark, from the 1960s until the present. It soon emerges that their life stories and deepest secrets are closely interwoven with each other, and a broader picture of obsession, exploitation and personal responsibility begins to take shape. he Plan is a coming-of-age story about being a child, growing up, falling in love and trying to find yourself in a multicultural microcosm. At the same time, it is a historical novel about the human cost of the failed integration policies of the 1990s and the hostile immigration debates of the 2000s. Morten is growing up in Copenhagen’s Urbanplan ghetto, the worst conceivable start in life. He is intelligent, more talented than his schoolfellows, and dreams of making it as an actor. But he’s clinging to the dream under impossible conditions in a sleazy and culturally deprived environment characterised by violence and crime, surrounded by the lower classes’ self-perpetuating ‘who-do-you-think-youare’ attitude, which more than anything else reinforces his and his friends’ conviction that they’ll never amount to anything.

The War Inside begins with the peaceful student protests of 2013–14, which over the course of a few months developed into bloody street-fighting in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev. It was a revolution led by Ukrainians who wanted emancipation from Russian dominance, which has deep roots in their history, language and self-perception.

carrying a message from his fellow hostage James Foley to his family in the US. Two months later, ISIS began killing the remaining British and American hostages - Daniel’s former friends during their captivity. The ISIS Hostage is a touching and terrifying story about friendship, torture and surviving in prison under extreme circumstances, focusing on one of the most spectacular and tragic international kidnapping cases in recent years. It offers an insight into the people who guarded and fed the hostages, some of whom were a product of the Syrian regime’s prisons, while others were from our own Western societies. Drawing on European, American, and Arabian history, this book illustrates both how they are linked and how they feed into one of the greatest challenges the Middle East will face in the years to come.

CHILDREN’S BOOKS

God would like to make the world a nice place again. Unfortunately for God, he’s put the somewhat absent-minded, slightly too halfhearted, slightly too hungry Holy Ghost on the job. The Holy Ghost ends up getting his wires crossed with the boy God wanted as a new saviour, accidentally choosing the main character, Albert Svensson. When he discovers his mistake, he grants Albert one wish, and Albert wishes his divorced parents were back together again. The book then traces seven days in Albert’s life, as what started as a pipe dream turns into a minor catastrophe. The status quo turns into utter chaos, and over the course of the week Albert realises one thing: his parents need to get divorced again! So he sets off to have a chat with God, knowing that He’s the only one who can reverse Albert’s wish to bring his parents back together. All ends happily, both children and adults learn something. Albert Svensson’s mum and dad decide to try a little bit harder – if not for their own sake, then for Albert’s. Seven Divine Days in Albert Svensson’s Otherwise Rather Ordinary Life is illustrated by Rasmus Juul.

THE BIG BOOB MISSION Thomas has a dream. He and his best friend are going on a mission that will turn the two boys into men. They’re going to see boobs. In real life. They feel like they’re the only two boys in year seven who haven’t seen them, and if they don’t get to see some before year eight they’re going to die as lonely, balding virgins.

SPECIFICATIONS: 192 pages, September 2016

The Big Boob Mission takes place in the year 2000 in a small town in western Jutland, where everybody knows everybody and most people play badminton in the winter months and football in the summer. Thomas and Christian are the school’s two oddballs, with their own club in the basement where they plan their mission.

In The Big Boob Mission we follow Thomas as he tries to juggle friendship, love, angry parents, Bjarke from the other class – the bane of his life – and the new boy, who was kicked out of school in the neighbouring town and seems a little dangerous. The Big Boob Mission is a story about friendship, and about realizing that saying something out loud doesn’t always make it right. The book takes place before the internet had been properly introduced in Jutland, but it nonetheless deals with issues that young people still face today. The Big Boob Mission is illustrated by Jan Solheim.

GRILLS & GREENS Most people love the flavour of grilled food. Anne Hjernøe has been grilling for as long as she can remember, and in her new book she shows that there’s really no limits to what you can grill. This book features all Anne’s favourites from the patio grill, and the recipes work equally well for coal grills as for gas grills. A tender steak marked with the pattern left by the grill is a classic, but Anne also has plenty of suggestions for everything from ribs, sausages, pulled pork and porchetta to grilled chicken or prawn skewers,

sliders (small, homemade burgers), lamb chops, whole fish, smoked mussels and lobsters with citrus aioli. Something else that tastes delicious when grilled is fried pork belly with parsley sauce – in Anne’s version it’s transformed into tasty grilled pork belly with a cold parsley cream and new potatoes. Anne also demonstrates how you can throw vegetables on the grill once you’ve got it going. The results are mouthwatering, providing the perfect side dish.
