Serious About Energy: Food for Thought

A MESSAGE FROM THE ENERGY LEADERSHIP TEAM

This May, JPS celebrated 94 years of fuelling homes and businesses all across Jamaica – and what a journey it has been. Today, we know that with major changes underway in Energy sectors regionally and internationally, our role as power experts is vital in providing trusted guidance and appropriate solutions for our customers, large and small. These solutions include the welcome addition of Renewables and LNG, which will be significant contributors to releasing us from the burdened reliance on expensive imported oil. As Jamaica pursues its goals of energy security and affordability, JPS has been successfully helping more and more customers examine their choices to determine which energy option works best to meet their needs. We have also led the charge in ensuring that Energy Efficiency is seen as the first line of defense against wasted energy in businesses and in homes, through our eStore energy saving devices, Pay-AsYou-Go prepaid meters and commercial Energy Audits. We regard Energy Education as an important component in making energy more affordable and as such, through our PowerSmart Energy Challenge TV Reality Show, various Energy Seminars and the work of the JPS Foundation Energy Clubs in schools, we are helping Jamaicans “put the power in their hands”, by arming them with knowledge to be energy-wise and to save money. As we have served in traditional ways for nearly a century, we are now eagerly serving as the go-to-source for energy efficiency and renewable solutions. We know Jamaica. We know Energy. The partnership with our customers mean the world to us and we are proud to be re-imagining energy…together. - Sheree Martin Senior Vice President, Energy Delivery

Serious about Energy: Food for Thought

The airline industry is a high paced, constantly moving environment with many key factors at play. Efficiency is the number one priority when you’re delivering first class meals to passengers traveling the global skies. Strephon Sanderson, the managing director of Goddard Catering, understands that efficiency is money and has successfully partnered with JPS on an initiative to get serious about energy. Here he shares some interesting Food for Thought on being a champion in the skies and on your plate.

The Goddard Catering Group is an international company with locations worldwide. When & why did they decide to expand their brand to Kingston, Jamaica? We are actually a Pan Caribbean company because we are in the entire Caribbean and Central & South America. We have not yet gone worldwide because our partners, LSG Sky Chefs out of Germany, handle the rest of the world. It was a natural progression for us; we started in Barbados as a supermarket. It then eventually spawned into a catering company for airlines, we actually did it from the Marriott hotel kitchen in Barbados. We entered the Jamaican market in 1981 after the change of government and divestment of government interests. So we partnered with Marriott, LSG & Grace Kennedy and bought the property from the government

Their internal competence and their capacity exceeded all the other providers of this service.

Tell us about your foray into the world of alternative energy. In 2015 we decided that when we design our Energy Management program we would add photovoltage to it. We installed the first 100 kilowatts in both flagship kitchens in Kingston and Montego Bay in 2015. This year we decided to expand, based on our experience, from the installation of the first 100 kilowatt. JPS wasn’t in the renewable energy business as yet. However, after we recognized that they were in this market now, we decided to have them partner with us. Their internal competence and their capacity exceeded all the other providers of this service. JPS also offered us a very competitive rate, which is important. We consider them to be the ideal company to help us do what we want to do.

2

What specific examples of energy conservation are you looking forward to with this new system? It’s actually to reduce our demand, because we cannot control the cost of power. That’s the only thing we have control over as a customer. About 4 or 5 years ago our electricity cost was approximately 12% of our gross sales. We have actually increased our revenues through expanding what we do, but right now it’s averaging about 4%. What we are doing is actually paying back for it. You mentioned that it’s a pan-Caribbean company, have other locations looked into solar energy? Yes, it’s driven into two folds, managing our energy costs and our impact on the environment. All our kitchens, which are located in 26 facilities in 24 countries are currently installing some form of energy management program in their facility.

3

Any advice for local companies who are trying to be more energy efficient? First of all, they should get an audit done to see where they’re at and then start an energy management program. Some of the time you might not need to install any technology but just by changing behaviour you can actually make a huge difference to your energy usage. Are there any plans to take additional steps in the future? Yes, but we will approach it in a modular way to see what can be done. We recognize that based on the nature of our business we cannot do without the public energy supply. We hope that JPS will continue on the path they’re on in regards to reducing the cost of electricity to the public. At some point we won’t be able to add anything more, as being so close to the airport comes with restrictions in regards to windmills and so forth. However, we continue to review the program from time to time to see what we have achieved and what we need to change. When JPS completes the installation later this year, it should reduce our carbon footprint by 450 metric tons per year.

4

Do you look forward to being competitive the more efficient you get? If so, please elaborate. Most definitely, because our customers are looking for better prices from us, as we know costs are driven by the cost of input. So yes we are looking forward to becoming more competitive. How would you describe the relationship and service from JPS? It is excellent! In the last 5 years the service from JPS has improved immensely. Their technical and account executive team is very responsive. Have you partnered with JPS on any other energy saving initiatives? We have not but I can say that working with them we find the JPS team has been very responsive, they know what we’re doing internally and they support it. The partnership can grow, because we are here for the long term and we know they are as well. What brought you into catering? I never thought about it, I was in Warehousing. I actually applied to Grace for a Warehousing position and there was no vacancy, but they had an opening in Goddard. That was 25 years ago!

4 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE GOING SOLAR Richard Gordon MANAGER, RENEWABLE ENERGY SYSTEMS, JPS

If you’re thinking of going solar then you’ll definitely have some questions. How do I get started? Does it make much of a difference? If so, how will I know? Having questions is completely natural when making a major investment. In fact, research is a wise decision especially when you are able to get the information necessary to take the most effective approach. As your energy partners we’re providing you with Four Things to Know Before You Go Solar!

Know Your Energy History

How efficient have you been throughout your energy usage? Having the answer to this question will guide you in deciding how much of an investment you will need to make. Being honest with yourself about your energy consumption will help you save in the long run.

Light Bill vs. Energy Costs

It is a little known fact that reducing your light bill is different from lowering your energy cost. One of the most frequent questions is, “How much of a difference will it make?”. The best way is to understand how much you will save versus the cost to purchase and maintain the solar system over a 20-25 year lifetime, something any good installer should be able to calculate. This will indicate your new cost of energy which can be compared with your present cost of energy. Looking at the long term you will learn that a wise investment involves lowering you energy costs and lowering your light bill.

Make Sure You’re Covered

Having solid infrastructure is imperative when you want to go Solar. Your roof needs to be in good enough condition to last the next 15 years without major repairs. The maximum wind speeds your roof can sustain needs to also be factored in the design of your PV system. Another important point is that solar panels need light to operate, not heat, so do a check to make certain that large mango tree won’t negatively impact the performance of your PV System. 7

Check & Double Check

You cannot be complacent with your electrical system. Technical codes and guidelines exist to help prevent any mishaps. Have a licensed electrician inspect and work on your electrical panel. These four points, though important, just scratch the surface of all the information available to anyone interested in making a solar power investment. The transition can be made easier by being honest with yourself, doing your research and contacting JPS to help make your solar move simple, because

Electric Vehicles FAD OR THE FUTURE OF TRANSPORTATION? Raise your hand if The Jetsons had you believing that we’d have flying cars by now. Though we’re not there yet we can be optimistic that some major strides are being made.

One such advancement is that of the electrical vehicle (EV)

Kenyatta Campbell

HEAD OF ENERGY SOLUTIONS, JPS

The advent of EV was met with much skepticism, and though it represents only 0.1% of global stock, sales have been increasing dramatically. EV saw a 70% jump in new registrations globally between 2014 & 2015. The verdict is in; people are warming up to EV’s, and fast.

However, many still question the viability and practicality of this new technology. Though electrical vehicles might not fully replace your fossil fueled sedan in the immediate future, they are providing an environmentally friendlier alternative. The proliferation of EV’s in the Caribbean is testament to the public’s growing demand; Cayman and Barbados have active commercial EV markets and and islands such as Bermuda, Aruba & Trinidad have created policies to support the growth of the market. 13

Even the chargers have been recently modified allowing fast charging; charge up for 20-30 minutes and you’re ready to hit the road! Battery prices have also declined as companies like Tesla are making huge investments in storage technology. This has led to higher levels of energy density and lower costs. Pretty soon they will reach price parity with ICEs.

Tesla Model S

With the increased environmental consciousness of consumers, and the push by governments to reduce their carbon footprint, there will be more wide-scale initiatives to select more environmentally friendly options. Considering these factors, our vote is that electrical vehicles are here to stay. 14

ENERGY SOLUTIONS FOR YOUR HOME

Aisha Campbell

GENERAL MANAGER DEVELOPMENT DIVISION WIHCON

1. Why did you decide to use JPS for this partnership? We chose JPS as we saw an alignment of our visions and objectives. For us it was sustainable energy solutions within our housing developments that tied with JPS’ push in the direction of energy efficiency and energy conservation. There were other providers of renewable energy solutions but we looked at the following: 1. We felt comfortable around the fact that we would get the service and the quality that we needed to provide to our customers. 2. We also we felt comfortable that JPS is not going anywhere so 10 years down the line we would have them to call and troubleshoot any issues that we would face in the future. 2. How long did this project/partnership last? The reality is we have been one of JPS’s customers for many years as we do Housing Development, so the relationship is not new. What is new is our branching out in this area of energy efficiency which we started aiming for about 2 ½ years ago. 3. Describe the Energy Solution product offered by JPS for Le Bermonde Project? 500 Watt PV system with a battery backup which was provided in each home.

15

4. Other than technical support describe any other services or support provided by JPS? What JPS did and what we were able to achieve with them in this regard was not only the technical aspect but also the PR and Marketing and the sensitization of our homeowners as to the benefit of having this solution and system in their home. We partnered with their PR arm to get the message out and show them how this investment had excellent long term benefits. 5. How did you find the knowledge level and professionalism of the JPS Team over the life of the project? I would say that they really demonstrated a high level of technical capabilities in terms of the system that was chosen. They were able to explain clearly and were constantly in contact which allowed us to update our customers on a regular basis. 6. Would you recommend JPS to your customers? Absolutely! I think they have the customer service, technical know-how and I also think they get it in terms of how present we have to be in regards to how we are impacting the environment and how we can individually play our part to minimize the negative impact. JPS Energy Solutions are ideal for that.
