2. YOUTH LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
THE AFFABLE and ultra successful Yaneek Page led the four young women in the JPS Foundation Young Women Leadership (YWL) Programme on a journey to find their driving force at the second Leadership Development Session held on February 7, 2014. Page, the founder of Future Services International Limited and conceptualiser of hit business reality TV show, The Innovators, was the perfect choice to encourage the ladies to step out of their comfort zones to be able to pursue and embrace success. Noting that she was once shy,
LESSONS FROM ‘THE INNOVATOR’ she told the ladies how she was able to find her voice by being involved in youth and entrepreneurial related endevours, often times as a volunteer. She also stressed the importance of being in service to others as a leader and demonstrated this beautifully
when she offered a glass of water to one of the young ladies. Page left them with a thoughtprovoking expression from Albert Einstein: “The woman who follows the crowd will usually go no further than the crowd. The woman
who walks alone is likely to find herself in places no one else has ever been before.” The next Development Session takes place on Friday March 14, when leading gender studies researcher, Professor Verene Shepherd, addresses the topic of ‘Gender in Leadership’.

… YWL ladies making positive differences We are so proud of our YWL participants who continue to impress us. This month we highlight two of our stars, Shana-Kay Cunningham and Kemesha Vassell. Kemesha Vassell continues to ride high on the academic wave. Her hard work continues to pay off as she was named to the Dean’s List. Inspired by the programme, ShanaKay decided to do something she always wanted to do—mentor. Here’s what the future Lawyer said about this
decision. “I went to the Jamaica National Children's Home to volunteer to mentor a child, to be specific, an orphan. So I will be mentoring a 16 year old female, who wants to be a lawyer. How cool is that! I am so happy as this is something I have always wanted to do.” Shana-Kay was also a featured guest on RJR’s Palav on Sunday February 16 alongside her mentor and JPS President & CEO, Kelly Tomblin and spoke eloquently about the YWL project.

4. EDUCATION
FALMOUTH GARDENS BASIC SCHOOL GETS WITH NEW PLAYGROUND STUDENTS AT the Falmouth Gardens Basic School in Trelawny now enjoy an enhanced playtime experience thanks to a speciallydesigned playground facilitated by the JPS Foundation. The facility was officially handed over to the children on Wednesday February 12, 2014. Conceptualised and designed by Sculptural Engineer and Contractor, Mr. Scheed Cole, it features eight fun pieces which are sure to keep the children energised and engaged. In addition to the conventional swings and see-saws, the outdoor play paradise boasts a Noah’s Ark, a Rock Climber with tunnel, a sand pit and two lifesized animals – a Tortoise and a Donkey that sits above a tyre hill.
“Interactions on the playground can bring about the innovation that can help turn around our world” In thanking Mr. Cole for his artistic vision, JPS President & CEO, Kelly Tomblin, shared that “Education is broader than it once was. Each of us has different powers and research shows that the playground helps to bring out a lot of the special attributes that we all have. “Interactions on the playground can bring about the innovation that can help turn around our world.” This is the first specially-designed playground to be installed at one of the three schools under the JPS
Foundation’s Model Schools Project. The York Town Basic School in Clarendon and the Kingston-based Rennock Lodge Infant School are next in line to receive a similar play area. Principal of the school, Margaret Gordon-Bennett, was delighted with having this new addition to her school. “I am so overjoyed. I thank the JPS Foundation for all its contributions to our school. Everyone is just so amazed at how beautiful this play area is and it will be of great benefit to the children.”
5. ENERGY ACADEMY
JPS FOUNDATION’S ENERGY ACADEMY POWERS STUDENTS’ LEARNING The JPS Foundation’s booth was a main attraction for Garvey Maceo High School students at their Jamaica Day event on Friday February 28, 2014. The occasion allowed for the Foundation to re-introduce its Energy Academy which is geared towards enhancing students’ learning in science and electrical engineering. The Foundation’s Volunteer Parish Liaison for Clarendon, Locksley Buckley, thoroughly engaged students in demonstrations of energy efficiency and how to correctly read a metre. While he focused on the students, Operations Manager, Donovan Moore, Customer Care Rep, Andrea Howell, Lineman Jvunalle Scully and Driver Rohan Williamson handled queries from the teachers and other adults regarding high costs of electricity and conservation techniques. Jamaica Day 2014 was intended to advance the teachings of Garveyism in the New National Civics Programme in
the year of the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the Universal Negro Improvement Association. This anniversary provides an opportunity to celebrate the markers of our unique Jamaicanness and our contribution to the world by acknowledging that which is represented in our continuous striving for excellence and greatness. It is anchored to objective number one of the Culture In Education Policy: “To develop or cause to develop a set of activities in the school geared at fostering greater cultural awareness within the school community and through this engender pride in self and country”. STUDENTS AT the JPS Foundation’s three Model Schools were showered with some extra love on Valentine’s Day, Friday February 14, when they were visited by teams of JPS staff from Regions South, East and West. The visits to the York Town Basic School, Rennock Lodge Infant School and Falmouth Gardens Basic School were the culmination of a thrilling two-week ‘Heart to Heart’ promotion which saw staff purchasing hearts valued from J$250 to J$1,000. This was coordinated by the JPS Foundation Volunteer Parish Liaisons who ramped up big sales totalling over J$180,000. Adding to the excitement was a competition element which saw St. Elizabeth’s Marcia Braham accruing the most funds and winning a lovely seven-piece jug set. Proceeds from these sales will go towards helping to enhance each institution. The hearts were then presented to the students on Valentine’s Day as a symbol of team members’ love for them. The children were also treated to yummy stuff like cake, ice cream and goodie bags of sweets to take home. The JPS Foundation ‘heartily’ thanks all team members who supported this loving endeavour.
