Pediatric Clinic and Child Advocacy Center

Mount Nittany Health – State College, Pennsylvania

While access to specially trained pediatricians was important for the CAC, so was security and the need to maintain the highest level of privacy for victims of abuse. Additionally, the Pediatric side had to be opening, welcoming, and create a playful and exciting environment. JPT met these design challenges by providing two separate entrances with secure interior passages between the separate functions. Colors, shapes, and lighting were selected based on their appeal to children, and to soften the experience of a doctor visit.

Mount Nittany Medical Center/Hershey Medical Center Medical Sciences Building II State College, Pennsylvania This proposed three‐story, 100,000 SF Medical Office Building is to consolidate existing outpatient services and further development of schematic plans for a 15,000 SF Medical Oncology component on the second floor. DESIGN/

Design / Construct What sets JPT apart from other designers and contractors is our comprehensive team of healthcare design and construction professionals under one roof. Having both entities under one roof eliminates communication problems between designers and contractors, providing the best of both worlds for clients.

/CONSTRUCT

We specialize in architectural and engineering design and planning for the healthcare industry.

The one certainty we have in healthcare is that change will happen. It will come at different rates of intensity and magnitudes of order. As healthcare architects and constructors we are continuously challenged with the need to balance current and immediate priorities, including costs, with the consequence of this inevitable change. Healthcare is changing in fundamental ways. Healthcare providers will be building thousands of structures — building, re‐building, re‐purposing, and infilling for new and shifting purposes.

What is the future of Healthcare? What’s the process that works through this complexity? How are you going to build it? Every building must meet its purpose! You are building for highly complex purposes in a rapidly changing demographics, clinical and business environment — and you want those environments to continue to be useful for decades into the future. Answering these questions, and constructing the solutions in a building, can be a difficult and complicated process, even for most health care systems. Frankly, many architects do not know how to do it at all.

This is where JPT excels. Our firm can help you navigate these complexities and come out with a customized plan for your healthcare facility.

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia King of Prussia, Pennsylvania

We used engaging room design and distraction techniques to comfort the pediatric MRI patients. In turn, this led to less need for sedation, shorter wait times, and a higher satisfaction rating.

What we did: Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHoP) desired to replace a 1.5T MRI and replace with new 3.0T MRI equipment. As part of the new design and their functional process, they wished to utilize less sedation for children. Research was conducted to ascertain the most effective imagery for children to keep them engaged in thought. Based on this research, CHoP introduced a program that uses various techniques to distract and engage patients, and multisensory elements, such as imagery, music, and videos.

How it paid off: The program is successful, resulting in 89% less sedation for pediatric MRI procedures the first year of use. This drop increased capacity, as well as allowing the MRI service line to increase scans by 15% over that same period of time. Meanwhile, both parents and staff reported higher levels of satisfaction in reducing stress levels for them and the children.
