eople tend to forget the beauty of the concept that is the continent called Africa. It is the continent with the greatest number of diverse cultures and languages. Though in recent times, the invasion of European cultures has attempted to infest and infect the already laid down African cultures, there is proof that these African cultures are still waxing strong. The symbol of Africa is its diversity of cultures. A small country like Uganda has about 30 tribes and yet still manages to live in peace and prosperity. Due to ignorance and naivety, there have been many misconceptions of Africa and what it is about. Some claim that there is no snow in Africa which is very wrong and some people's thoughts are in the captivity of the thought of Africa as a dark continent. Another stereotype i find offensive is the fact that westerners intentionally forget to discern Africa as a country and as a continent. A young cousin of mine spent about 6 years in the United States and when next i saw him, he regarded Nigeria as Africa and i was just disgusted. I also couldn't blame him because it was the effect of the westernised 'civilisation'. There are several wonderful cultures in Africa. The Afar, Ashanti, Fon, Samburu, Zulu, Fang, Yoruba and many others. Exploring these various cultures would give a person an inept insight into what Africa as a continent entails. Over the years, the west had bathed in the egotistical waters and put on the garment of dominant superior complex which deluded them into thinking that they decided to spread those dominant tentacles to oppress various countries in Africa and all over the world which had led to the extinction of some of these beautiful cultures. I find myself asking these questions. These white people preach civilisation and peace but were we not civilised and living in peace before they came? Their culture is corrupt and the spread of it to African countries is like a corrupt cankerworm that has eaten deep into the core of Africa. Below are African countries that have

The tribes that were dominant in the pre-colonial era are being modified as a result of contact or contamination according to some westernised concepts with the institutionalised African cultures. Therefore, hybrid cultures were given birth to. Cultures that still have that African essence but are trying to adjust and conform to the western culture. In recent times, studies have shown that children from about 65%-70% do not know their indigenous heritage and cannot even speak the indigenous languages. As bad as things may seem, there is still hope for a better Africa. In the aspect of literature, some scholars argue that what makes European literature European, is the use of European languages. If African literature is written is written in European languages, what validation is there for it as African literature? It is therefore imperative that we create an awareness of what it means to be African because then and only then can we re-establish what Africa is and what it stands for. JPZ Magazine Issue II | 5

H I M A M A N DA N G O Z I ADICHIE: Nigeria most influential woman (born 15 September 1977) is a Nigerian novelist, nonfiction writer and short story writer. She has been called "the most prominent" of a "procession of critically acclaimed young anglophone authors [that] is succeeding in attracting a new generation of readers to African PERSONAL LIFE AND EDUCATION Adichie, who was born in the city of Enugu, grew up the fifth of six children in an Igbo family in the university town of Nsukka in southeastern Nigeria, where the University of Nigeria is situated. While she was growing up, her father James Nwoye Adichie was a professor of statistics at the university, and her mother Grace Ifeoma was the university's first female registrar. Her family's ancestral village is in Abba in Anambra State. Adichie studied medicine and pharmacy at the University of Nigeria for a year and a half. During this period, she edited The Compass, a magazine run by the university's Catholic medical students. At the age of 19, Adichie left Nigeria for the United States to study communications and political science at Drexel University in Philadelphia; she transferred to Eastern Connecticut State University to be near her sister, who had a medical practice in Coventry. She received a bachelor's degree from Eastern, with the distinction of summa cum laude in 2001. In 2003, she completed a master's degree in creative writing at Johns Hopkins University. In 2008, she received a Master of Arts degree in African studies from Yale University. Adichie was a Hodder fellow at Princeton University during the 2005–06 academic year. In 2008 she was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship. She has also been awarded a 2011–12 fellowship by the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, Harvard University. Wong International Short Story Prize 2002/2003 (PEN Center Award). Her first novel, Purple Hibiscus (2003), received wide critical acclaim; it was shortlisted for the Orange Prize for Fiction (2004) and was awarded the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best First Book (2005). Her second novel, Half of a Yellow Sun, named after the flag of the short-lived nation of Biafra, is set before and during the Nigerian Civil War. It received the 2007 Orange Prize for Fiction and the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award. Half of a Yellow Sun has been adapted into a film of the same title directed by Biyi Bandele, starring BAFTA winner and Academy Award nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor and BAFTA award-winner Thandie Newton, and was released in 2014. Her third book, The Thing Around Your Neck (2009), is a collection of short stories. In 2010 she was listed among the authors of The New Yorker′ s "20 Under 40" Fiction Issue. Adichie's story, "Ceiling", was included in the 2011 edition of The Best American Short Stories. one of 39 writers aged under 40 in the Hay Festival and Rainbow Book Club project Africa39, celebrating Port Harcourt UNESCO World Book Capital 2014. In 2015, she was co-curator of the PEN World Voices Festival. Adichie says on feminism and writing, "I think of myself as a storyteller, but I would not mind at all if someone were to think of me as a
G
feminist writer... I'm very feminist in the way I look at the world, and that world view must somehow be part of my work. LECTURES Adichie spoke on "The Danger of a Single Story" for TED in 2009. On 15 March 2012, she delivered the "Connecting Cultures" Commonwealth Lecture 2012 at the Guildhall, London. Adichie also spoke on being a feminist for TEDxEuston in December 2012, with her speech entitled, "We should all be feminists". This speech was sampled for the 2013 song "***Flawless" by American performer Beyoncé, where it attracted further attention. "We should all be feminists" TEDx talk, and "Flawless" song verse "We should all be feminists" was a TEDx talk that was given by Adichie in 2012. She shared her experiences of being an African feminist, and her views on gender construction and sexuality. Adichie believes that the problem with gender is that it shapes who we are. "I am angry. Gender as it functions today is a grave injustice. We should all be angry. Anger has a long history of bringing about positive change, but in addition to being angry, I'm also hopeful because I believe deeply in the ability of human beings to make and remake themselves for the better.” Parts of Adichie's talk were sampled in Beyoncé's song "Flawless" in December 2013. Speaking of the performance during an interview with NPR.org, Adichie commented that "anything that gets young people talking about feminism is a very good thing." Responding to critiques of Beyoncé's feminist credentials in another interview, Adichie asserted that "Whoever says they're feminist is bloody feminist."

ender equality, also known as s e x e q u a l i t y, g e n d e r egalitarianism, is the view that all genders both male and females should receive equal treatment and shouldn't be discriminated based on their gender. But instead of Gender Equality we have gender discrimination and violence against women rampant i n o u r s o c i e t y t o d a y. “Violence against women is global phenomena as old as human history”. Women are entitled to every human rights and freedom without discrimination or violation. Women's rights are inherent in nature and guaranteed by law. Therefore gender discrimination and violence against women are contrary to fundamental human rights, equity, natural justice and good governance. Reconstructing women's rights, gender discrimination and violence through library and information services delivery is aimed at making information available to all about this topical issue. In human rights issues availability and access to information on the nature of women's rights and dimensions of gender discrimination and violence can never be more appropriate than now”. Francis O. Anaeme Senior Librarian University of Nigeria, the Quest for a safer and friendlier environment for women and the girl-child has long been running across thin and thick lines all over the world. It was recently argued keenly that probably and most generally assumed, that men were born to take up 'Authorities', while women were born to enjoy 'Privileges'. You could hear of a man with three wives in the same house; but not a
woman with three husbands in the same house. In a different case, a gorgeous good looking lady might be o f f e r e d a j o b b y a company at the expense of a more competent man, simply because the l a d y ' s b e a u t y w o u l d entice more investors and customers. The former illustration oozes 'Authority' while the latter demonstrates 'privilege'. Although this is usually not the case. Right in our nation, Various NGOs, pressure groups, have shown massive support and encouragement for an hallmark change as to how women and the girl child are been viewed by the 'BlackAfrican' society. There have been Legion of reasons stated as to WHY and HOW women should been seen as more than just 'pretty faced', 'homefitted', 'cook-endowed' or 'romantic symbols' only good for the house chores and just as kidmistresses'. Looking critically at the political sphere of the nation, women have been silently relegated to a background where they are just good for 'a deputy position', while a few get a nod at National Assembly. Even voters including brilliant women themselves, have a doubting faith in accruing their votes to women at the electoral post. The reasons attached to this may be seduced out of context; 'women are seen and believed to be 'incapable' and 'weak' to assume the most notable leadership roles in the community'. This seems to be a thick 'glandular layer'. A naturally invoked knowledge, which for ages has acted as an indispensable force on the children of men to believe and perceive women to be unable to lead where men lives. Methods often employed by women when agitating for gender equity, quest for more recognition in the society, stiffer laws against rape etc. have been mediocre and even selfdamaging at times. Portraying women as been stronger than men would pull no hair from the Mountains skin; Refusal to address the more widely
accepted case of inappropriate dresses in higher institutions, would make the war against Rape less bloody and less won. As long as girls wear promiscuous clothes; they are always going to be at the haunting mouth of violence and miles away from Gender Equity. Dropping off the pen: it's needless to assume that the society has started receiving a revival from the preformed knowledge about women. More work would have to be done and fast. Feminists, women and girl child pressure groups, have a mountainous summit to reach in a bid to draw closer the gap between what the woman can do to benefit her society and what the society is made to believe the woman is. Ability to sensitize, empower and practically showcase vibrant roles women are playing in politics, academics, medicine, economy etc. would spur a greater acceptance of the women's quest. This would make the society to feel more secured. Parents may need to be more swaggered in giving their girl child a safely detailed Sex education. The correct sex knowledge being drifted into the inner mind of the girl child gives her the power to say No to premature Sexual advances by the opposite sex. The same knowledge would help to safeguard her from assuming a position or location where she becomes vulnerable to Rape. However, more popular ineffective shows about who a woman is sometimes allegedly 'more stronger than Samson and David, richer than Dangotes of this world, powerful than Obamas would always definitely make it harder for the quest of a possible gender equity to be more realistic and the more it widens the gap between the 'authorities' that men enjoy, and the 'share' Women are agitating to enjoy whether it's an impossible mission is yet to be known. BODY LANGUAGE LOVE SIGNALS
ody language is the process of communicating nonverbally through conscious or unconscious gestures and movements. People (sub-) communicate almost 90% of their intentions through their posture, movements, and tone of voice. The reality is that what a person says matters, but can be completely opposite of how he or she feels. "Body language is hardwired into our brains, and therefore most often used in unconscious movements," says Allan Pease, A body language expert. Experts and relationship analyst says understanding body languages in relationship and marriage goes a long way in relating and understanding eachother. In some people its obvious and easily seen, while sometimes some people don't easily show it. Women are better wired for picking up on non-verbal signals, so it leaves men with more chances of easily detecting and picking up women's non verbal expression. Signals men need to know 1.When women toss or flick their hair: If you are talking to a woman and she flicks her hair, maybe twice or more than that, it definitely means she's into you. But if you're the one watching and she's done it for someone else, well, better luck next time. It's a woman's way to show she cares about how she looks and wants to impress her man. 2. When women fiddle with a round object: If a woman is fondling a phallic-shaped object such as the stem of a wine glass or a dangling earring and giving you repeated glances, she finds you attractive. It also means she's approachable. Go for it. 3. When women are unconsciously touching themselves: This is body language at the most basic level. "Watch for a woman slowly stroking her neck, throat or thigh. 4.When women point their knees: When you see a woman sitting with one leg tucked up under her, chances are that the knee pointing outwards is pointing towards the person she finds the most interesting. Hope that is you. If she's wearing a dress or skirt, it can offer a fleeting glimpse of an exposed thigh to anyone who's looking — preferably the person of interest. 5.When women put their face on display: A woman who is trying to attract a man's attention, with elbows resting on a surface, will place one hand on top of the other, then place her chin on her hands and face directly to him as is she is offering it to him for admiration. It is an extremely feminine gesture, and an intimate one, as it also allows the woman to lean in towards the man. It also indicates that he has her full attention, and is open to flattery, flirtation and advances. Signals women need to know Girls, watch out for the following in your man: 1.When men have protruding thumbs: Thumbs are prominent in many hand gestures, as they represent strength of character and the ego. A man will use protruding thumbs, in front or back pockets, around women to whom he is attracted. 2.When men display their crotch: Every woman reading this knows at least one man who sits with his legs spread wide at her, like he is taking her photograph. The crotch display is effectively putting a man's masculinity on show. When his feet are planted firmly on the ground, with his legs apart, displaying the crotch and letting whoever is observing know that he's not going anywhere. 3.When their fingers point to what he wants you to notice: When a man's thumbs are tucked into his belt or into the tops of the pockets to frame the genital area, it indicates a sexually aggressive attitude. He has unwittingly given away what's on his mind. 4.When men try hard: To make them look more appealing, men will unconsciously arrange their
clothing. They will straighten their tie, brush imaginary dust off their shoulder and adjusts their trousers; even unconsciously. His mind is saying, 'I want to look my best for you' and his body responds accordingly. 5.When he laughs hard at unreasonable things you say or do: Men usually open up easily when they are comfortable with the mood in the air. If he loses himself, gives you attention and laugh hard at even the silliest thing you say, he's into you. Other Gesture and body languages are: Gesture: Brisk, erect walk Meaning: Confidence Gesture: Standing with hands on hips Meaning: Readiness, aggression Gesture: Sitting with legs crossed, foot kicking slightly Meaning: Boredom Gesture: Sitting, legs apart Meaning: Open, relaxed Gesture: Arms crossed on chest Meaning: Defensiveness Gesture: Walking with hands in pockets, shoulders hunched Meaning: Dejection Gesture: Hand to cheek Meaning: Evaluation, thinking Gesture: Touching, slightly rubbing nose Meaning: Rejection, doubt, lying Gesture: Rubbing the eye Meaning: Doubt, disbelief Gesture: Hands clasped behind back Meaning: Anger, frustration, apprehension Gesture: Locked ankles Meaning: Apprehension Gesture: Head resting in hand, eyes downcast Meaning: Boredom Gesture: Rubbing hands Meaning: Anticipation Gesture: Sitting with hands clasped behind head, legs crossed Meaning: Confidence, superiority Gesture: Open palm Meaning: Sincerity, openness, innocence Gesture: Pinching bridge of nose, eyes closed Meaning: Negative evaluation Gesture: Tapping or drumming fingers Meaning: Impatience Gesture: Steepling fingers Meaning: Authoritative Gesture: Patting/fondling hair Meaning: Lack of self-confidence; insecurity Gesture: Quickly tilted head Meaning: Interest Gesture: Stroking chin Meaning: Trying to make a decision Gesture: Looking down, face turned away Meaning: Disbelief Gesture: Biting nails Meaning: Insecurity, nervousness Gesture: Pulling or tugging at ear Meaning: Indecision Gesture: Prolonged tilted head Meaning: Boredom

They have been married for 10 years and have one child, Brad (4). Ben has been a hard worker, but has not been able to keep a job for more than 2 years at a time. He starts out okay, but soon becomes disillusioned and feels taken advantage of. He usually gets in an argument with his boss or coworkers over a perceived injustice and walks off the job. He is a skilled mechanic and soon finds work elsewhere. Vickie works as a secretary for a small business and has had the same job since she was 19. Even though she has no college education, she has worked her way up to a responsible position and is well paid.. Ben started another new job and was away at a specialized training when Vickie realized that she felt more relaxed and happier when Ben wasn't there. She was able to work, take care of the household duties, and have fun with Brad and still have energy left over. She got together with friends a few times and enjoyed relaxing in a social setting. When Ben got home, Vickie asked for a separation. She told Ben how relaxed and happy she had felt when he wasn't there, and started complaining about how he couldn't hold down a job, never helped around the house, and was almost a stranger to his son. Ben defended himself by saying he is trying, he loves her, and he's tired all the time from working so hard. He promises to be a better father and help more around the house. Knowing he had promised this before, Vickie says she'll give him one more chance to change....or she's leaving. After a brief attempt to fulfill his promises, Ben falls back into his old habits. One day he returns from work and there is a note from Vickie saying she's moved out to stay with a girlfriend to "see what she wants to do about the marriage". Birth Name: SULEIMAN Abdulfatai Olabode Born: 24 Sept 1991 Origin: Ondo State. Genre: Afro,Hip hop,R&B Occupation: Singer,Songwriter,Rapper Instruments: Guitar Mentor: Bryan Adams, Asa, Barrister Twist is an upcoming singer, song writer, rapper and an Entrepreneur, His love for music started at the age of 9 when his Dad got him a tape player as a birthday gift. The tape player changed a lot about him; music became his new and only hubby. Twist grew up listening to Barrister, Orlando Owo, King Sunny Ade, Daddy shoky, 2pac and many more which actually influenced his unique style of music. Twist hails from Ondo state capital, Akure although he was born and breed in Ilorin kwara state Nigeria. He became conscious of his ability to compose his own lyrics on his first day in the boarding school and ever since then he became more conscious of his flair. In 2007 he joined a group called Double trinity. Double Trinity was the only musical group in Federal Government College, ikirun back then. The group made up six good singers of which Twist took lead most of the time. They made hit songs that rocked the school back then, especially 'Double Trinities'. Twist claimed the group actually gave him an eye opener into the music industry and what he is capable of. After graduating from the high school, Twist couldn't secure admission into the tertiary institution as fast as he thought and instead of wasting time he decided to do more of music and improve on his vocals too. Twist had his first studio section in 2009 which turned out to be woeful. According to him, “it wasn't what I expected at all, the production was so poor and we had to do a lot of things manually, which slowed us down a lot. He said. “My first studio session actually received a lot of criticism but that made me propelled more” He added. Twist has shared stage with the likes of Tony Tetula, Olamide, Terry G, Skuky, Lamboginny, Reminisce and so on…Twist released his latest song Gold & Silver on 1st of February 2016, which has gotten mad air plays. The song got his fans astonished as he did a beautiful love song which is quite different from his usual style ''Rap'' To connect with Twist:

If your antioxidant levels are low, oxidative stress can occur, making you susceptible to many illnesses including heart disease and cancer. Therefore, in order to keep your body healthy and your immune systems strong, you must consume an abundance of antioxidants on a daily basis. These powerhouses can be found in many fruits and vegetables, and common antioxidants include vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, beta-carotene, flavonoids and polyphenols. Below are some foods that contain antioxidants and can benefit your health: They are real (unprocessed) foods – so powerful, they can help you lower your cholesterol, reduce your risk of heart disease, cancer, and even help put you in a better mood. And… there are NO side effects!

THE ADVERSE EFFECT OF
HORMONAL CONTRACEPTIVES
By Omooba Adeyemi J.O, Oladosu Ifeoluwa, Williams Olamide ontraceptive is a term used to classify the methods
C
of prevention used against contracting diseases during sexual intercourse It could also be seen as
the practice or phenomenon or devise for stopping or preventing pregnancy. The pill is an example of a contraceptive. It is also called emergency or morning pill. It is taken orally. It's main function is to prevent pregnancy. If taken correctly, it is up to 99.9% effective. However, the pill
HOW HORMONAL CONTRACEPTION WORK
T
here are two types of contraceptive pills: Combination pills and Mini or Progestin-only pill. The combination pill contains both of these hormones, whereas the mini pill - contains only the hormone progestin. All hormonal contraceptives i.e pills, rings(A plastic ring inserted into the vagina that releases hormones to suppress ovulation) contain dosages of synthetic man made estrogen and progestin hormone (or both). These hormones in their high quantity work to inhibit the cyclical changes that initiate conception or pregnancy. The hormonal contraceptives stop the body from ovulating. Hormonal contraceptives also change the cervical mucus to make it difficult for the sperm to go through the cervix and find an egg. Hormonal contraceptives can also prevent pregnancy by changing the lining of the womb so it's unlikely the fertilized egg will be implanted. In many proven cases, Oral contraceptives are also used as a method to prevent ovarian and endometrial cancers but it also comes with some undesirable side effects. 1. INTERMENSTRUAL SPOTTING : Intermenstrual spotting may occur due to the uterus adjusting to having a thinner endometrial lining. It could also be due to the body adjusting to having different levels of hormones. Approximately 50-60% of people using the pill experience vaginal bleeding between expected periods – This is also known as breakthrough bleeding. People who experience 5 or more days of bleeding while on active pills or heavy bleeding for 3 or more days should seek medical advice immediately. 2. NAUSEA: Some people experience mild nausea when first taking the pill. Symptoms, however, usually subside after a short period of time. Taking the pill with food or at bedtime can help lower the likelihood of nausea. 3. BREAST TENDERNESS: Birth control pills may cause breast enlargement or tenderness. This change tends to improve a few weeks after starting the pill. Reducing caffeine and salt intake can decrease breast tenderness, as can wearing a supportive bra. 4. HEADACHES: The sex hormones have an effect on the development of headaches and migraine. Pills with different types and doses of hormone may result in different headache symptoms. Some studies have previously suggested that headaches are least likely to
occur with pills that contain low doses of osteoporosis and bone fracture in later life.15 hormones. 5. WEIGHT GAIN: Clinical studies have found no consistent association between the use of birth control pills and weight fluctuations. However, many people taking the pill report experiencing some fluid retention, especially in the breast and hip areas.Fat cells can also be affected by the estrogen in birth control pills, although the hormone causes the cells to become larger rather than more numerous. 6. MOOD CHANGES: People with a history of depression are always advised to seek medical help before using any form of hormonal contraceptives. This is because some people do experience depression or other emotional changes while taking the pill. 7. MISSED PERIODS: Once in a while, for some people, a period may be skipped or missed. Several factors can influence this. Factors such as stress, illness, travel, and hormonal or thyroid abnormalities. If a period is missed or is very light while on the pill, a pregnancy test is recommended.
INTRAUTERINE DEVICES (IUDS) A small device made from plastic and copper that is inserted into the uterus. IUDs can be hormonal or non-hormonal. Hormonal IUDs thicken cervical mucus and suppress ovulation, while non-hormonal IUDs produce an inflammatory response in the uterus that is toxic for sperm. IUDs can cause intermenstrual spotting and irregular menses. Some IUDs can lead to heavier periods with worsened cramps. OOPHORECTOMY Oophorectomy is the surgical removal of the ovaries; the part of a woman's reproductive system that stores and releases eggs for fertilization and produces female sex hormones. Side effect could be:Bone thinning (osteoporosis). Removing your ovaries reduces the amount of bone-building estrogen your body produces. This may increase your risk of a broken bone.
Discomforts of menopause. Hot flashes, vaginal dryness, sexual problems, sleep disturbance and sometimes cognitive changes are problems for some women during menopause. Removing your ovaries doesn't mean you'll immediately have these problems, but it does mean that any menopausal symptoms you develop will occur earlier and are more likely to reduce your quality of life 9. So, I had a perfomance that had 20 characters, I feel comfortable doing everything myself, playing all 20 characteristics. So the first 5 years after my graduation, after my first degree, I was doing that all over the country; a one man show ( a package of 1hour 45minute). I was doing it round the country in University of Ilorin, Ibadan, Ife, Ondo, Jos, you know; just going around doing all those thing for like 5 years. But theatre, I can tell you has actually influenced me, I can speak now. Hafiz as a person is a very reserved person and I want to dress simply. I want to live, I don't want noise around me. So when I get home (my wife is also a very quiet person, so it suits me alot) I get that quiet. But sometimes I play with my children especially when I leave them for a long time. Sometimes, I travel out of the country and then come back like one or two months after. I don't want my children to be far away from me. Once I leave them for sometime, I want to bring them back to me. So the first few days I play with them. We do games, I perform for them, and then we come together to become friends, close friends again. But generally, Hafiz and Saka are two different people. Sir, which was your first acting role, and which movie would you say you acted and, or directed that you would love to see again as your best movie? That question is like that one you ask a father, which of your children do you like the most?' (laughs) Every child is loving to you except something terrible happens. However, let me just say in all my years I want to thank God that I enjoy every bit of my activities in the theatre, either on stage, on a location, even as a teacher. I enjoy what I'm doing and I want to thank God for that. God has given me the grace to find myself doing what I love and enjoy. However, there is a particular movie, I did not direct it, I acted in it. It was produced and directed by Uncle Yomi Odumosu. It is titled "The Head of State", I played the role of Chief of Staff. It is not the performance, it is the process that I went through. The professional experience I got there, I really appreciate it. It was one of the most challenging and professionally rewarding experiences that I have had in the theatre. I directed a stage play as a lecturer here. It is titled "Toast to the Modern Man". The idea was not my own; it was of Dr Femi Adedina. It was an article and I adapted it into a stage play. I felt so fulfilled when I watched it performed on stage. Unfortunately, when our department got burnt. . .I felt that of everything that got burnt in this department it stood out; it still comes across my mind every time. However, many of the movies I directed I enjoyed them. They were very good. Sir, can you tell us who or what inspires you? GOD. I must tell you, I don't have any special story and all. I did not have any dream about it. I just found myself there and I think it is God. God inspired me to do all I've done. God is the creator and giver, He is everything. God is fantastic. God is the greatest. To me, God has used so many people in the lives of my friends, my lecturers especially Mr Chuck Mike and Mrs Ajayi. Mr Chuck was a Black American and when I got to 100 level at Ife, he practically took me to the University of Ibadan every weekend to go and see Mrs Ajayi. I'm not sure if he paid Mrs Ajayi or not but he did a lot of personal work on me. Mr Chuck treated me as his very special student. And so all of mychallenges were resolved, at least many were. And Mama Ajayi was treating me like her own son. She was not teaching me in the class, she told me to be coming to her house every Saturday. So she
would teach me and do alot of exercises until when I started talking to a lot of people. They were both very good to me. And so if I am to mention two people in my life who have actually done something on terms of performance and artistry they will be Mr Chuck Mike and Mrs Ajayi. Ofcourse all my lecturers at Ife, they tried. They took interest in me. My family and my students. I want to thank all of them because God has used them to add alot of value to my life. Talking about endorsement deals, we know about you being an ambassador to MTN, and a few years back you worked with Etisalat. The issue of 'porting' from Etisalat to MTN, was it about money, interest, or something professional? Let me just correct issues. It is because of the person I am. I am a professional theatrical practitioner. I am a human being and I believe that as an average Yoruba person I hold integrity and dignity of human beings dear. So I will never forsake these for any material thing and I will never do anything that will tarnish the image of my profession. I have never do anything in my life outside the theatre. So it is a profession which I have a great deal of respect for, and will continue to do so till I die. I was never an ambassador to Etisalat, that is what so many people don't know. You can check the record, I was just a model for an agency that was managing Etisalat's account. They go out to corporate bodies, get jobs from them and then, they hire people to carry out and do things for them. And as at that time, I was free to do things for Etisalat, bricklayers, pure water... For anyone! I have never had any contact of interaction with Etisalat management, in my life up till now.So, as at that time, the agency was doing sim registration for Etisalat and it was a monthly thing. I guess, when they invited me and I did my own bit, they liked it, and then, they wanted to be using me as regularly as possible. There wasn't any arrangement at all. You can go and ask centre spread. Centre spread was the agency then. So, I was just like an ordinary labourer to the contractors. At a point in time, I stopped. If you noticed, there was a gap for about 5 or 6 months, I travelled out of the country. When I came back, mtn contacted me directly to be their ambassador. And the due process was followed and I went ahead and became their ambassador. It was a very simple thing. Money is good. In fairness to centre spread, they were paying me. Whenever they wanted to do something for Etisalat, they used me. They were
paying me well, Okay? But as a professional, I also need to upgrade my integrity. There are some things I would not like to tell you, but the thing is that, it is not because of money. Sir, in a few sentences, can you describe what fans think of you and what fans should be expecting from you this year? Well, I dont know what the fans think of me, but I want to say that in the nearest future, my production would be on screen. I am a teacher. I don't have so much time to go to locations, that is why my production is slow. Presently, we are shooting we have a programme that we want to air this year by the grace of God. It is titled, "We-We". It is a story that runs through London, America, and Nigeria. We have been able to shoot the London bit, we have been able to shoot the American bit. During the vacation that is coming, we would go and conclude the American bit. And then, we would come back and finish up the Nigerian bit and then start showing of on TV. I also want to be one of the major medium of adding value to people's lives. That is probably why I am in the academics. I like showing my opinions . You may impact the small knowledge but God has impacted onme in other people. For me, teaching is also a form of acting because when you're teaching, your are playing the role of a teacher . As so, if you perform in the classroom, the classroom performance is official. It is formal. The performance outside the classroom is informal. So, acting is acting, because in acting, you're passing a message , you are impacting knowledge in class. You are impacting knowledge. You are expressing opinion. So, I really enjoy that. So, the last time we saw you on screen, you were on "who wants to be a Millionaire", the "Who deserves to be a millionaire edition, and you were there to help Alariwo of Africa to win sum of money on the game so. Sir, should we see an aspect of you as a philanthropist? Hmmm, I can't say. I dont know. I just know that I love adding value to people's life. I love to give my small support to my fellow human being, not only to people in the entertainment industry but also everybody around me. And so, I want to be of assistance to the best of my ability. Sir, what is your advice to youths who want to go into the entertainment industry? Well, number one; there is no shortcut to success. I am sorry to say, youths today lay so much emphasis on packaging and place less importance on content. So, at the end of .the day,we package nothing. I would advice that we look into content again. It is when you have good content that you package and when you package your good content, it would last for a long time. But if you package on empty things, well, it would attract people, but just for sometime. And then, it would go off. That is why we see some people were here maybe yesterday and today, we dont see them again. That's one. You should be patient: Life itself has its own rhythm, step by step, stage by stage, sequence by sequence; that is the rhythm of life. So, if you dance outside that rhythm, there is a problem. People are so important. The philosophy of" now!" Is not good because it would make you to dance outside of the rhythm of life. So, at a point in time, there may be problems. That is why we have a lot of problems today. Life itself has due. You have to pay your due, not only in terms of serving people, but in terms of nature. Being patient, being prayerful, being hardworking, you know. For instance, you are all in school, while others are playing. This is also part of paying your due. Asides, for academic things,

HAFIZ OYETORO a.k.a SAKA
Can You Tell Us Who Hafiz Oyetoro Is? afiz Oyetoro is a Nigerian, an average person from western Nigeria born in Adegbola, Iseyin. Adegbola is a village within Iseyin. My parents are from Iseyin; my father was a big farmer. At a point, he went to farm in Adegbola; it used to be a farming settlement but at a point in time it became a village where they settled down and they only went to Iseyin once in a while. But while they were living there I was born there, as a matter of fact the first nine years of my life was spent in Adegbola. Adegbola is just a few kilometres from Iseyin. At that time they used to take me to Iseyin during festivals, Ileya, and so on. And at a point in time I started my primary school at Iseyin: Baptist Day School and when I finished from there I went to Koso Community Grammar school, Iseyin. So I finished from there and I went to study Dramatic Arts, my first degree, at University of Ife now Obafemi Awolowo University. When I finished from there I came back to Ibadan to do my Masters degree in African Studies. My area of study, then, was African Dance Theory. So after some time I started working, in fact after my first degree I was just working professionally as an actor. When I finished my service with the NYSC in the 90s Ilorin, Kwara state I came back to Ibadan to settle down and I was practising in the theatre where then I did my Masters. After that I came down to Lagos to settle down and in the process I got a job here at Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education as Assistant Lecturer. Well, to the glory of God, today I am now a Senior Lecturer and the Head of the department of Theatre Arts. I am married with kids. I am also trying to pursue a PhD programme at the University of Ibadan where I did my Masters degree. Presently this is what I do; I am a Theatrical Practitioner and a lecturer. I think I have answered that. Can you tell us at what age did you start entertainment and art? Well, I just found myself there. If you are talking about practising, I did not see myself as a professional theatre practitioner. But I think it actually came up when I went to the university. I noticed when I was in Primary school I was often put in drama competitions and the literary and debating societies. And I became a very active member of the dramatic societies when I was in Secondary school. Even then I was thinking I would be a pilot because, actually, I wanted to be a pilot. I told you my father
H
was a farmer, as a farmer I used to go to the farm with him so once in a while an aeroplane will fly pass. And when I looked up I'll see that object in the sky, and then one day I asked my father "What is that?" and he replied that it is a 'baloo'. And when I said what object is it because it is usually tiny. But my father told me that when it is up there it is so small but as it comes down it becomes big, big and bigger. So I was conscious and wanted to be part of it. I later found out that it was a means of transportation for the rich, so I was determined that one day I'll be a passenger. But a man told me that instead of being one of the many passengers, why not be the driver yourself. So I planned to be a 'driver' of an aeroplane at the time (not knowing it was rather a pilot). Basically, I started acting and working on the stage professionally after my first degree at University of Ife. Sir, you're are a father, an academician, an actor, and a comedian, Obviously, some people look up to you. How do you manage the attention from being a father, a proffesional, a teacher, and all? I thank God. God is managing things for me. I'm in the office now, when I finish from the office I would go home. Nigerian producers and directors know that Hafiz is a civil servant, and has to be in school from Mondays to Friday, and when they want to fix productions, shootings, and everything, they fixed during weekends and mostly during holidays. People are complaining now that 'we have not seen you'. Its because we are already in school. When we get our vacations now, I would go to location and get some of these things recorded. So, that's how I do it; weekends and holidays for shooting or doing MC and other entertainment things. During the week, I am in school, some weekends too, I stay at home with my family. Things are working well. God is faithful to me. Like I always tell people, the greatest mistake a man can make is to marry a woman who does not share his vision. And so, when I go out, I am comfortable that my home (not house now) is well in order. I always feel happy to go home whenever I leave work. Whether I'm on stage, I'm in class, on location, once I finish, I am always eager to go home. A woman in my home has turned a house to a home for me. Somethings that would always cause problems for me, that I would be thinking of doing, my wife is already doing it. So, I just go. So,

home is taken care of. My job, office is taken care of. So, things are working well for me. I must thank God for that. So, I also have time to relax. Before I married, I used to play badminton a lot as a form of exercise for me, you know. But at a point, because of time, some of the things I also do is to watch films and to listen (I listen a lot). I enjoy listening to people, sometimes, I used to go to beer palour or food seller where they used to play ludo. Unfortunately, I can't do that again. What I just do is to watch films, and listen to my colleague. I don't drink beer. Anything alcoholic, I don't take. I don't chase after women. I don't smoke. So, those are the areas that can take time. Because if you drink, you would like to go to the club to go and smoke, to have other women around. So, all those things I don't do. It gives me time to share amongst my activities. I thank God for giving me that grace. For all the years on set, you've made us laugh uncontrollably. Is that how you are naturally, or are you just being professional? I don't know. I think there is a difference. I don't know whether Hafiz himself is funny. But I think there is a difference between Hafiz Oyetoro and the Saka that everybody knows. And I think naturally Hafiz is a total theatre practioner. Naturally, I think Hafiz is also gifted comically because sometimes, when I go out and just express myself as Hafiz Oyetoro, people still laugh. Then, I begin to wonder " what's making these people laugh?". Naturally, but most of the time, Hafiz is on the quite side, while Saka is on the noisy side. I'm not the out spoken. I don't go out unless I'm invited for an event, I don't go. (I was brought up under a strict restriction) , so I got used to it. In fact when I got into the university, I found it very difficult to interact. And so , it was one of my lecturers, Mr Chuck Mike, who now had to take me to University of Ibadan to take a therapy because I didn't interact with people, I didn't talk so much. He took me to Mrs Ajayi, a speech specialist. And then, I went through speech therapy and all that. In fact, through out my IT years at Ife, I was going to Ibadan every weekend for speech therapy and I had to go and do some special psychology courses for me to be able to interact with people. So, Hafiz is just a closed person. But to the glory of God, you know the theatre has given me some influence in some ways; so now, I can discuss issues with people. When I was in school, because of the kind of person that I am, I couldn't interact with people, so I was actually doing solo perfomances. But I had an idea to gather people and share it. I was always on my own.

I could feel the biting pain of it but I was enchanted by the biting beauty of it. It was hard to let go because oblivion is where I would be without it,but while my love brought me ecstasy and untold joy my love was a poison to that person and i would rather unlove than bring minute pain to that person. So I have stepped into the boundary of insanity, that point called oblivion. A gift of love to someone who couldn't love me because like they say it takes love to let go.

thought my mother hated me. I was just a ruse; my father was the real villain. She hated my father. She spoke about him frequently and with so much bitterness in her voice. Those moments were the worst because she kept on talking even when only her lips were moving. Everyday was a new discovery as she slaved, begged and tore her life apart so we could survive. There were days when all the anger left her eyes. She would
stare at me, seeing him in me. Even then, all she would talk about was him, his voice, the way he walked, his gesticulations, the ways his lips quirked when he was about to smile, the colour of his eyes, the emotions just seeing him aroused. She speaks of him only, smiling as she went through those memories again. She would speak of him till tears were clouding her eyes and her pale pink lips on ebony skin were trembling. Then her countenance would suddenly change. She would scream at me, 'he abandoned me! Denied me! He kicked me away. Those eyes looked at me like something he couldn't touch. The anger would possess her again. At those times, I felt like someone trapped in the middle of two opposing forces. I grew up feeling her pain. I grew up with her bitterness instilled in my bones because i love her and I knew she wanted to love me too but the pain ate her. My pain increased when I held her hands, her eyes closed, her warmth gone and her body lifeless. 'My life started with him,' she once told me. It seemed like her life also ended with him. She had died of food poisoning. My mother was meticulous and careful to a fault. I knew only she could have successfully poisoned herself.
