Be Inspired 4 Life The greatest show on Earth is coming to London on 27 July 2012. It will probably never return due to it being London’s third Olympic Games. No city, to date, has been awarded the opportunity to host the Olympics four times. The Games provide us with a unique opportunity to inspire Hampshire’s children, young people and practitioners now and in the future. This pack is a collection of ideas and suggestions in consultation with both primary and secondary phases. It is designed to help and assist classroom practitioners with ideas of how to embrace the Olympics and Paralympics and link with the National Curriculum. It also provides the opportunity for a cross-curricular or subject specific approach. Our aim is to encourage people to see that the Olympic and Paralympic Games are not just about sport, but are a platform for a variety of agendas and approaches. This includes the Olympic values, the history of the ancient and modern Olympic Games, raising aspirations and resilience of young people, and increasing awareness of the importance of healthy eating and active lifestyles. By taking this approach, our aim is to have an ongoing impact not only on individuals, but also within families and wider communities. To achieve a legacy for Hampshire many different partners have worked together to produce these resources. These partners are: • Hampshire County Council, through: o HC3S o School Sports Partnerships o Hampshire Healthy Schools o Children’s Services o Schools Library Service o RADE

This resource has had further input from children and professionals within the following schools and, more importantly, from the young people themselves: • Anton Junior School • Anton Infant School • Connaught Secondary School • Grately House

• NHS Hampshire

• Harrow Way Community School

• Sport Hampshire and IOW

• Portway Junior School

• Winchester District Council

• Manor Field Junior School

• Be Your Best Foundation.

• Wyvern School.

Background context Welcome to Hampshire’s Be Inspired 4 Life teaching resource. It has been created using the inspiration of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games as a springboard to engage children, young people and professionals. The Games provide an excellent opportunity for teachers and educators to: • raise children’s aspirations • encourage high levels of attainment • promote healthy lifestyles and healthy eating • develop or strengthen partnerships locally, nationally or internationally. This resource supports practitioners with ideas, lesson suggestions, background information, resources and websites. Topics are not just based around PE and sport, but in a cross-curricular approach in five themes stated below. It is designed to be used in a variety of ways, either by a cross-curricular approach with detailed mind maps, or by subjects with suggestions progressive across the Key Stages. Alternatively you could use the themes as a topic based approach for a unit of work, or just dip into the areas or suggestions which suit you. Each theme also has web links to support the delivery of the suggestions given. • Theme 1: The Olympic and Paralympic values • Theme 2: The history of the Olympic and Paralympic Games • Theme 3: Aspirations and resilience • Theme 4: Physical activity • Theme 5: Healthy body and healthy eating Accompanying this resource is a challenge booklet for children, which is designed to run alongside the themes. The underlying principles of this resource are: • cross-curricular – not narrowly focused on sport and languages • being fully inclusive – not narrowly focused on the Olympics and mainstream schools • student centred – not teacher centred • a chievement focused – with suggestions that will support raising attainment and outcomes for all young people • R RR/UNCRC – links closely with the seven Olympic and Paralympic values and school ethos of any Rights Respecting School.
