SCHOOL UNIFORMS

SUMMER SLIDE PREVENTION

Each year when students come back to school it takes them a little while to get back into the swing of things and to perform at the level they were working at prior to the vacation. Educators call this the summer slide. This is very natural for all of us. The best way to minimize that loss is to keep students engaged over the summer. Maintain a schedule and have students read, write, and engage in mathematics each day.

LIBRARIES

Summer reading should be fun. The on-base libraries have exciting reading programs. Join up! View militarymwrguam.com for more information or call Naval Base Guam NBG 564-1836 or Andersen 366-4291.

EFMP TRAINING

MAY 26, 2021 AT ANDERSEN TOP OF THE ROCK by Family Readiness Regional Program Director, Dr. Marcia Gladney Marcia.Gladney@fe.navy.mil The Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) is designed to provide support to military family members with special needs. The EFMP is a multidisciplinary assignment tool that interfaces with other military and civilian agencies to provide comprehensive and coordinated medical, educational, community and personnel support to military families with special needs.

SPECIAL NEEDS RESOURCES Often when families relocate the most difficult task is reconnecting with service providers and support groups that are similar to the support network they had at the last duty station. Scan the code below to view a list of some of the service providers, informational sites, and support groups for families that have children with special needs.

EFMP documents long-term medical needs (including physical and mental health) and special education needs of Exceptional Family Members. Enrollment in the EFMP ensures consideration of the needs of family members in the assignment process. Training was spearheaded by Joint Region Marianas Family Readiness Regional Program Director, Dr. Marcia Gladney. JRM provided family support, medical personnel, family members and service members with the latest information on programs and services available to military families with special needs. Presentations targeted topics such as Exceptional Family Member Program Overview, TRICARE, Helping Families through the IEP Process, What is Autism/Developmental Delay, Suitability Screening, Family Support Programs, Clinical Counseling Services, School Liaison Program and access to other programs and services. The training culminated with the need to strengthen partnerships to ensure comprehensive services are available to support the military community. Participants were asked to spread the word about EFMP, encourage families to enroll, and increase awareness regarding support services provided at NBG Fleet and Family Support Center and Airmen and Family Readiness Center.

School Board DODEA Guam School Board Vacancy Nominations Interested in making a difference in the DoDEA Guam Schools? Interested parents who have children in the DoDEA Guam schools may apply. A completed nomination form must be returned to the school or the DoDEA Guam Community Superintendent’s office email at linda.salas@dodea.edu or fax (671)344-9584. For a nomination form and for more information your child’s school or call (671)344-9578. The school board for the DoDEA/DDESS Pacific West Guam Schools is a fivemember panel elected by parents and staff of the DoDEA schools on Guam. The School Board represents Andersen Elementary, Andersen Middle, Guam High and McCool Elementary/Middle School. The School Board members must have children attending at least one of the represented schools and may not be employees of the DoDEA Pacific Guam school system. 10

School board members are elected to serve a one to two-year term. Because many military families serve on Guam for two years, it is acceptable to serve a one-year term as long as it is for one entire school year (August – June). The time commitment is approximately 5 hours per month. Meetings include agenda setting meetings, school board meetings and meetings with the high school student council, town hall meetings, and other meetings as requested by the Community Superintendent. Additional time commitments may include school functions, liaison meetings, phone conversation with parents, and additional ad hoc committees. OVERVIEW OF SPECIFIC DUTIES OF A SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER: • Participates in the development and oversight of educational policies, procedures, and programs for the Guam School District consistent with Instruction Number 1342.25. This board serves strictly in an advisory capacity.

• Prepares agenda and approves minutes for school board meetings. • Prepares an annual written onsite review of the Community Superintendent’s performance for consideration by the Director, DoDEA Pacific. • Participates in the development of school policies, rules, and regulations, in conjunction with the Community Superintendent and recommends which policies will be reflected in the school policies. • Attends school board training as provided by the district. • Elects members to serve as President, Vice-President and Secretary for oneyear terms. • Prepares a schedule of school board meetings that meets the panel’s and community’s needs. • Participates in preparation of the End of the Year (EOY) report for consideration by the Director, DoDEA Pacific.

DoDEA Pacific Schools Leaders Visit Guam

GUAM HIGH STUDENTS & FINANACIAL MANAGEMENT The Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) partnered with Guam High School to educate students on the importance of financial literacy. FFSC’s Accredited Financial Counselor (AFC) Germaine Moore presented basics on budgeting along with an activity to tie the presentation together. Students were given a variety of expenses and were instructed to create a budget based on what was given. The significance was to inform students on the importance of budgeting, saving, and utilizing money wisely. SUPPORT FOR HOME-SCHOOL STUDENTS

The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) takes great pride in its ability to extend a positive educational experience to any eligible military-connected student who chooses to engage with our schools, including homeschool students. DoDEA recognizes and respects that home-schooling is a military member’s right and that it can be a legitimate alternative form of education for military-connected families. DoDEA neither encourages nor discourages military members from home-schooling their children. DoDEA Directive-Type Memorandum (DTM) 16-E-001, dated December 19, 2016, claries DoDEA services that are available to eligible Department of Defense (DoD) dependent home-school students.
