Connecting You To The Capital City

montgomery park trails Getting from here to there enjoying the great outdoors! With plenty of sunshine and year-round warm temperatures, Montgomery is an ideal place to enjoy the great outdoors. Lately, city and private leaders have begun several new efforts to make Montgomery a great place to bike, walk, and jog.

For example, did you know that Woodmere Arts Park, Blount Cultural Park, and Ida Belle Young Nature Park individually offer an extensive set of running and/or biking trails? If you zoom out on Google Earth, you will discover

that these three parks are only separated by a road on each side. The City of Montgomery is proposing adding a few crosswalks & connector paths to create enough continuous paths to run/ walk 6.2 miles (10K) across all three parks. These parks offer some of the most picturesque pastoral views in the city. Montgomery’s Development Department, Parks and Recreation Department and various neighborhood associations have been working collectively to design the trail system to enhance the area subdivisions and the City as a whole. A group of citizens called the Lagoon Park Trail Committee have

been working to clean up several miles of trails throughout Lagoon Park for walkers, runners and mountain biking. City Workers, business and volunteers have donated hundreds of hours of labor, services and supplies to help clear the trail. Four miles of trail are ready for use. To complete the trail a bridge has to be constructed over a creek which will cost more than $25,000. The Committee hopes to be able to raise the money through private donations. There is another $50,000 to $100,000 of long-term improvements needed to ensure the trail doesn’t get washed away or disappear over time. Montgomery Multi-Sport is in the

process of designing another 8 to 12 miles of trail for mountain biking that will incorporate much of this first phase of existing trail. Working as privatepublic partnership, communities have more ownership and will work with the city to make sure the trails are properly maintained. Plans are also in the works to have bike lanes installed throughout the city to connect places like the East Montgomery Park Trail to Oak Park and on to the Riverfront and Wright Brothers Park. Increasing connectivity to the vast number of green spaces in our city is essential to building a safer, stronger, healthier community. The Pride of Montgomery

A Word from Mrs. Strange

PRIDE

The

Welcome to Montgomery, Alabama's capital! A few years back we initiated a branding campaign to spread the word that we’re also the Capital of Dreams! While we are proud of our place in history as the Birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement and Cradle of Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange the Confederacy, we wanted people and First Lady Linda Strange to see what the city has to offer now and in the future; and to let everyone know that Montgomery is a place where dreams can come true. A good education is the platform on which dreams can be built. We’re proud of the national recognition our public schools are receiving. LAMP Magnet High School was deemed the number one magnet school in the country! We have several other schools that are also receiving high praise for student achievement. Montgomery is home to eight colleges and universities. Military personnel from around the world come to Air University at Maxwell Air Force Base to learn about the newest ways to protect us through the air, in space and in cyberspace. We’re working to become a dream destination for tourists. Public and private partnerships are bringing in new attractions, new hotels and new restaurants. We are home to some of the finest sports venues in the Southeast. Riverwalk Stadium, where the Montgomery Biscuits play, has received numerous design awards as one of Minor League Baseball’s best ballparks. Perhaps some of you have come here to Montgomery to cheer on your sons and daughters during championship tournaments or other athletic events. If you have a taste for culture, our Museum of Fine Arts is located in the same park as the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. Its collection of American artwork is known nationally. As the City’s First Lady…I’d like to exert a little executive privilege and extend a special invitation. During the League of Municipalities convention, if you go to the Museum and say, “I’m a friend of Linda’s,” you’ll be admitted absolutely free of charge. I have to confess that the Museum doesn’t charge anyone admission…but I want the staff there to remember that I have friends everywhere! Lastly, like most of your hometowns, Montgomery relies heavily on sales taxes as a revenue stream. That’s why I’d like to tell you about shopping opportunities here in the Capital of Dreams. Eastdale Mall is a traditional, indoor shopping venue with dozens of stores and even its own ice skating rink. The Shoppes at EastChase are located right on I-85 at Exit 9. There are wonderful stores, boutiques and restaurants, something for shoppers of all different tastes. We also have quaint, little family-operated shops in our Cloverdale neighborhood, on Mulberry Street and spread across the City. Montgomery’s best asset is its people. Please take the time to see the hospitality we have to offer and I’m sure you’ll come back again and again. Have a great time while you’re here in the Capital of Dreams!

LASIK

The LASIK team of doctors at Primary Eyecare Associates in Montgomery are (from left) Fredrick Jackson, O.D.; Bret L. Fisher, M.D.; and Benjamin Harris, O.D.

LASIK laser vision correction is not just a service at Primary Eyecare Associates. They have set exemplary standards for their patients to receive the most successful, affordable LASIK available today. The Montgomery eye care practice and owner Fredrick Jackson, O.D., have been managing LASIK patients for a dozen years. They use state-of-the art LASIK technology, including the first Z-LASIK flapmaker in Montgomery. Their LASIK surgeon, Bret L. Fisher, M.D., is internationally known and has performed more than 11,000 successful LASIK procedures. "We strive to offer the best LASIK in Alabama, and I think we've achieved that for many years," Jackson said. "We not only take pride on our LASIK results, we make sure our patients feel cared for and informed about their vision."

Is Precision Focus Of Primary Eyecare Associates

Affordability also is a central concern. Primary Eyecare Associates offers LASIK starting at $795 per eye, with no hidden exam fees – making it the least expensive LASIK in the region. Moreover, patients are offered financing through CareCredit, with interest rates low as 0% for two years and payments as low as $33 per month.

For the rest of the LASIK procedure, they offer CustomVue technology, which is the gold standard of the industry. The CustomVue system includes using custom 3-D mapping by the VISX Wavescan to guide the procedure and, in the final LASIK step, using the VISX Excimer Star Laser to reshape the cornea and correct vision.

The practice also offers free pre-LASIK screening to ensure patients' eyes are suitable for LASIK. If they are not, there is no fee, Jackson explained.

This all-laser LASIK corrects near and farsightedness, with or without astigmatism. Monovision LASIK is an option for presbyopia.

"In years past, LASIK became nationally known as an expensive procedure, for patients and doctors alike. But Primary Eyecare Associates now makes it affordable to most," said Benjamin Harris, O.D.

Their LASIK equipment is most highly maintained and is recalibrated for accuracy at the start of each LASIK surgery day and after every handful of procedures, Jackson noted. Many other LASIK clinics don't recalibrate often because it is expensive to do, since gas canisters used cost about $1,000 each to fill.

Jackson and Harris manage LASIK patients' pre-op and post-op care. Fisher is one of the most experienced LASIK surgeons in the country and has performed the refractive surgery for 15 years. Primary Eyecare Associates was the first in the region to offer blade-free Z-LASIK, which is the safest and most accurate system to create LASIK's corneal flap. This Femtosecond LDV Laser manufactured by Ziemer emits a high-frequency beam 100 times less intense than earlier flap-making lasers, according to Ziemer. Its other benefits include faster healing times and reducing rare complications from LASIK.

Primary Eyecare Associates also has donated LASIK to Montgomery area "Hometown Heroes" for three years. "We periodically give away LASIK to outstanding citizens. We ask the public to nominate members of the military, police officers, firefighters or teachers," Jackson explained. Primary Eyecare Associates has clinics with optical shops in Montgomery and Prattville. For an appointment or more information, call (334) 271-3900, or visit www.PrimaryiCare.com.

Since eyes are like fingerprints and no two are alike, the VISX Wavescan mapping system is used by Benjamin Harris, O.D., (right) to custom guide LASIK vision correction for patient William Reeves of Montgomery. A LASIK technician displays eye data that is used to create a Z-LASIK flap, with Ziemer's state-of-the-art Femtosecond LDV Laser.

Health & Fitness An Amazing Journey... ... of 6 Millimeters! by Dr. Frank Rho

I want to give you a tiny illustration of how amazing you are. Imagine you are the size of a single human cell hovering over the surface of your perfect tooth. It's shining and white, reflecting the light like the frosty frozen surface of a clear winter lake. As we touch the surface and feel its smooth hardness, we move past the surface into the enamel, seeing the light illuminate the crystalline structure like a glowing quartz cave. The hardest part of our body, it is 97% mineral and a little bit of water. As we descend deeper into the tooth, it suddenly makes a change. The surface turns darker and softer and we see that it looks a lot more like bone. The dentin of your perfect tooth has millions of channels; round tubes leading to the center, filled with a clean, clear fluid that pulses in and out like the tides of the ocean. We swim into one of the caves. The cave wall surface is 70% mineral and the rest looks like tightly wound fibers as it speeds by. Deeper into the tooth we go weaving through the twists and turns of the dentinal tubule until we reach a soft back wall. There are some amazing cells here. Little miracle factories that made the dentin you are in now. Looking past it, we see life: the vital pulsing of bloodflow nourishing and bringing life giving oxygen to the cells. Tiny strands of nerves flow like long brushed hair. It’s amazing to me when I think about the complexity and care that the Creator had in making us. I described just 6 millimeters of your tooth and left a lot out. If that little bit of us is that extraordinary, just imagine how much of a miracle you must be in your entirety. Have a great month!

Dr. Frank K. Rho received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Loma Linda University in 1997. saying good-bye... by Holli Driver-Coley

How do you say “good-bye”? How do you get “closure” when a loved one passes away? I don’t have the perfect answer. What I do know is that you establish a new “normal”, a new world without that person physically in it. At least, that’s what I’ve done since receiving “THE” call February 13, 2013 where the voice on the other end uttered, “there’s been an accident. Your father’s dead. I think you need to come down here.” The next moments, hours, days, weeks, seem to all roll together like a dream at first then robotic movements of life: work, friends, family, and responsibilities.

cycle through each stage many times in different order. The grieving process is a personal journey. No one gets to dictate what it should or should not look like. Each person gets to create their own ritual for letting go, for moving forward, for celebrating their loved one. There is no wrong or right. The necessary goal is that you keep moving through the process, keep walking out the journey of grief and do not get stuck in any one area.

The FIGHT Against Obesity by Corey & Donna Ellis

Lets keep it real, no one really wants to, or chooses to be overweight. It has to do with circumstances, obstacles, and situations that causes him or her to find comfort in overeating.

If you didn’t know, the state of Alabama is considered one of the most overweight states in the country. As professional fitness trainers, knowing this information gives us the drive to extend a helping hand. The individual, first and foremost, has to take the initiative to admit that he or she has an obesity problem. I often hear overweight people exclaim that big is beautiful, or he or she loves being big. I have also heard individuals comparing double digit pants sizes with one another, and almost seeming to be proud of the inflated number on the size pants they wore.

16

The Pride of Montgomery

Health & Fitness Boy's & Girls Club Annual Membership: $5 Impact: Priceless

by Salina O’Brian

S

ir Isaac Newton once said, “If I’ve seen further, it is by standing on the shoulder of giants.” Here at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the River Region (BGCRR) that’s what we do: help the boys and girls of the River Region see further. The giants who help us accomplish this are our board members, local businesses and caring individuals who sponsor our charity events, and countless volunteer who give their time to help us offer a positive place for kids in those crucial after-school hours for an annual membership of $5. The Boys & Girls Clubs serve over 1,300 youth in Montgomery and Elmore Counties at three different sites each year, providing diverse activities that meet the interests of all youth. Our core programs engage young people in activities with adults, peers, and family members that enable them to develop self-esteem and to reach their full potential. The clubs are 18

Boy's & Girls Clubs of the river region considered a second home and provide a professional staff that offers guidance and leadership as positive role models. Our Clubs are at the heart of our communities. We create programs that address the unique needs of each community. Why is the current teen pregnancy rate in Montgomery County at 40.3% per 1,000 teen girls? This is a direct result of a lack of investment in appropriate sexual health education. Our “Making Proud Choices” program was implemented in 2011 to offer medically-accurate, age appropriate, evidence-based sexual health education to our members ages 13-19 at our West End Unit, Chisholm Unit, and Wetumpka Unit, all located in high-risk areas vulnerable to teen pregnancies and STIs. The Boys and Girls Clubs of America have implemented a new strategic direction plan, Formula for Impact, a 10-year strategic direction for the

Boys & Girls Clubs movement, which captures the components that make the outcome-driven Club Experience powerful and life-changing and enable youth to achieve academic success, good character and citizenship, and healthy lifestyles. This is done through offering program activities in five key areas: The Arts, Health & Life Skills, Sports, fitness, & Recreation, Character & Leadership Development, and Education & Career Development.

JT & Leanne: Married with Microphones!

Dads & Stepdads An Important Role! According to US Politics Today, as of March 2012 - Census data demonstrates that almost one-half of the people in the U.S. come from "split families." JT and I are a “blended” family, I like that term better. I also grew up in a blended family. My parents divorced when I was 16. It was very hard, but as a result I have an amazing stepdad. He has always been there for me and my sister and is great to my mom. He also takes a very active role in being the girls’ Papa! It takes a special man to come into a ready-made family. After my divorce, I thought I was never going to get married again. Odds are high that second marriages will end in divorce, almost more so than first marriages. JT and I got married in 2006 and he has been an amazing stepdad from day one. Sometimes the role of a step-parent is very confusing, especially because in today’s world, dads are taking a more active role in parenting. I feel very lucky and very blessed that JT has been there for the

8-hour dance recitals, the 2½ hour band concerts and been a great support to me when it comes to discipline. I am sure it gets pretty scary for him from time to time with 3 teenage daughters – he is the only man in the house, but in my book – he always gets an A for being a great stepdad! So to all the stepdads out there – hats off to you and Happy Father’s Day June 16th! It's JT here - being a dad and a stepdad is a challenge. There are always issues, especially with teenagers. Modern technology like the internet, cell phones, texting, chatting, and Facebook have made it even more difficult to make sure your kids are doing the right thing and not headed down the wrong path. Communication is the key for me. I make it a point to take time out of my busy schedule to talk to the girls, see how their day went, and arrange times where we can do things together or one-on-one. Whether it's playing softball in the back yard, taking them to SweetFrog for some frozen yogurt with 40 toppings, or just

sitting down to dinner as a family, it goes a long way. How Leanne keeps up with the laundry that this household produces, I will never know. I'm trying to help as best I can and run a radio station, produce a TV show, sell real estate and be a dad at the same time. Wow! That's a lot - our family life stays crazy and seems to be on fast forward lately. Our oldest, Kim, will be graduating from High School Next Year - Go Prattville Lions! I have to get back to working and parenting (and maybe even some sleep in between!) Have a great month - Happy Fathers Day to all my fellow dads out there & talk to you in August!

Unity in Diversity not Uniformity Dr. Kalai Mugilan, MA, MPH, PHD

W

e confuse the meaning of unity and diversity as though these words are opposites of each other. As though, diversity is the enemy of unity, and with diversity, unity cannot be achieved. However, the opposite of unity is disunity; not diversity. Unity is to be in accordance or in agreement. The word diversity refers to variety. No matter how improbable it feels, unity can be fully realized in diversity, just look around the world. Unity and diversity exists well, and better and stronger than unity in uniformity.

T

he universe is filled with diversity with very little uniformity; in fact, diversity is the fabric of life. You could even say diversity is what makes the continuation of life possible in the face of all adversities in the universe. Even within the same immediate family, people observe diversity and wonder, “how did that happen? And no matter how hard we try to form uniformity, diversity will naturally evolve out of it.

22

The Pride of Montgomery

W

hile the concept of uniformity has its functions and appears solid and strong, uniformity fails miserably in the face of severe adversity. However, regardless of the adversity, when unity is present right along with diversity, not necessarily uniformity, life on earth can have a pretty good chance of surviving the adversities.

I

n fact, even in everyday life issues, in the face of any problem, we need a diversity of ideas and thoughts not uniformity of ideas and thoughts.

Chef & Owner Missy Mercer

Browne and Missy Mercer, the owners of Louisa’s Bakery, are anything but new to the food industry! The Mercers have over 18 years’ restaurant experience. Missy studied at the California Culinary Academy where she earned her culinary degree, and they are constantly working harder to produce the best food possible with the freshest ingredients. Browne and Missy purchased Café Louisa and Tomatinos, located on Fairview Avenue in Old Cloverdale, nine years ago and then expanded and opened Louisa's Bakery in January 2007.

The idea to open Louisa’s Bakery began when the Mercers realized that the demand for their baked goods was so high, more space was required to keep up with production. After three years of baking out of their kitchens at Café Louisa and Tomatinos, the couple expanded to the Woodley Road location to add 1,000 square feet of extra kitchen space. They created the bakery to be “carry-out” retail, since Café Louisa is right around the corner. Missy loves the challenge of working "under pressure" and serving the public. Hearing comments from her customers brings her so much joy. She is proud of all the people that work so hard to make fresh food from scratch, with local ingredients, and have fun doing it! Her favorite part of being a business owner is the ability to make decisions and manage the processes in order to make things run smoothly on a daily basis. Missy likes the fact that she can "tweak" things to streamline production and ultimately, to take care of customers more efficiently. When asked about her passion involving Louisa’s Bakery, Missy is quick to respond, “producing the highest quality baked goods made with the best ingredients possible from local syrups, nuts, seasonal fruit, Swiss chocolate and unrefined sugars and flours.”

3 cups Flour 1/3 cup Sugar ¼ cup Non fat Dry Milk ¾ tsp Salt 1 TBL Baking Powder

2 Eggs 2 tsp Vanilla Extract ½ cup Milk 4 oz Butter-diced & cold 1 cup Seasonal Fruit

Procedure: Combine all dry ingredients. Whisk eggs & milk together. Add vanilla. Cut butter into dry ingredients then add liquid. Add Fruit. Form into wedges and chill for at least 30 minutes. Egg wash, sprinkle with turbinado sugar & bake for approx. 30 minutes at 350 degrees.

When God Asks The Question

"What Is Your Name?" by Allen Bowen

Genesis 32:27-28

New International Version (NIV)

27 The man asked him, “What is your name?” “Jacob,” he answered. 28 Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.” Don’t be too surprised if one day God asks you the same question that He asked Jacob in this verse. What is your name? The more days that He allows me to live, the more I am convinced that whenever he asks a question, He is teaching. He is omniscient, He doesn't need to know anything. The old school teachers would tell us that they often asked us questions to see if we were learning anything. In other words, they would give us tests and quizzes to see if we had wised up any. What is your name? When He asks this question, don’t be caught off guard. Know that He is not concerned about the church you attend, who your pastor is, where you work or who you are married to. He wants to know if you know your name. Who are you? Aside from your friends, your image, your clothes, your car, your neighborhood, and everything that you possess, Who are YOU? When God asked Jacob who he was, his answer was pitiful. He said, “I am Jacob.” The reality of what he was saying is that he was simply who people say that he is, or who they said he was. Just Jacob! All his life people had called him a cheat, a liar, a thief, a con man: a trickster. My job in this writing is to tell you that you are not what others say you are. They did not create you and have no authority of who you are. Many people will try to label you to limit you. You are more than an opinion. Do not let others determine your success! Do not let others limit your potential! What is Your Name? You may be one of many who have been chained to your childhood, chained to your past, but understand you are more than your past, you are more than a bank account, and in fact you are more than your circumstances. Ask yourself this question on a daily basis: What is your name? Note: Many have been called to do many things, but all have been created for praise!!!

ALlen Bowen is the owner of The Space Walker, as well as a Pastor and Youth Minister.

Something's FISHY! by Kasey Hope

It's summertime and what better art to do than some fun fish! Here are two fun techniques to do at home! 1) Take some Crayola Color Explosion paper (the blank pieces, not the one with characters on it) and cut into some fun fish shapes. Then let your little ones use the special markers to decorate the fish. The markers work like magic. They don't show up at first, but give it a few seconds and some very cool colors will begin to appear! Or for more advanced little artist try this.... 2) The wet-on -wet technique is when you wet watercolor paper with plain water and then drop in watercolors with your brush. You are adding wet paint on top of wet paper and suddenly the colors bleed together creating a tie-dye kind of look. Here are some samples of what my students created with the wet on wet effect. We had a blast with these techniques and I am sure you will too!

When Will I Know It Is Time To Let Go? by Dr. Phil Mitchell, DVM

It is difficult telling an owner who has loved and cherished their pet that the end is drawing near. The anguish required to make the final decision to euthanize is heartbreaking and difficult. Most pet owners seek the answer to the question “When will I know its time to let go?”

THE ANSWER IS NEVER EASY Over the past twenty-five years of practicing veterinarian medicine, God has blessed me with wisdom to help my clients with this decision. I also must give credit to many of my veterinarian peers who have shared their advice with me over the years. Hopefully, the following information will give you guidance if you are faced with euthanizing your pet.

EVERY PET’S ILLNESS AND SITUATION IS DIFFERENT There really isn’t a “one size fits all” rule when euthanasia is being considered. Getting input from your veterinarian on the specifics of your pet’s medical condition is critical. I have also found that taking a friend with you on your veterinarian visits may also be a good idea. It is often better to have someone there who isn’t as emotionally involved with your pet to help you see what your pet is facing from a different perspective.

A LONG-TESTED FACT IS PETS LIVE IN THE MOMENT Pets have an innate ability to embrace the present. Every time I come home my mixed breed white fluff does the jumping for joy parade around my feet. Even though I have entered this door thousands of times before, and will leave again in a few hours, it means nothing to my dog. All that matters to him is the joy he feels right now. When our pets are suffering they do not reflect on the past or ponder what tomorrow will bring. All they know is what they feel today. By considering this perspective, hopefully a pet owner can see the world more clearly through their pet’s eyes. And remember, their eyes are what matter when life is getting difficult for them.

BE HONEST WITH THE ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS I have often found that having pet owners think about the following questions helps them come closer to making a decision. I would even recommend writing down your answers to reflect on when guilty feelings surface. 1) Why do I think it might be time to euthanize my pet? 2) What are my concerns or fears about the euthanasia process? 3) Are there any other interests I am taking into consideration besides what is best for my pet? 4) Am I making this decision because it is best for my pet, or because I am not ready to let go?

USE THE QUALITY OF LIFE GAUGE TO HELP DETERMINE HOW YOUR PET FEELS • Is life a joy or a drag for my pet? Think about the top five things your pet loves to do. Write these down. When he/she can no longer do three or more of them, their quality of life is being impacted. • How many good days versus bad days does your pet have? Tracing the answer to this question can actually help you see that your pet isn’t feeling well. When your loved one is having more bad days than good, a decision needs to be made. • HHHHHMM Dr. Alice Villalobos, a veterinarian oncologist, devised a scale known as HHHHHMM. The five H’s represent Hurt, Hunger, Hydration, Happiness, Hygiene (a pet’s ability to keep themselves clean from bodily waste, not their owner keeping them clean). The two M’s represent Mobility and More (more bad days than good days). Dr. Villalobos recommends grading each letter on a scale with 1 being a poor quality of life and 10 being the best quality of life. If the majority of categories are ranked as 5 or above, continue with supportive care for your pet. When these numbers begin to fall, this is a great indicator it’s time. No matter what the circumstance it is never easy making the final decision to euthanize your special friend. As I have stated earlier, all circumstances and situations are different. As a pet owner, accepting the decision to euthanize your pet is difficult. I hope I have given you some tools to help ease the guilt if you are faced with this decision.

Dr. Philip Mitchell has been practicing veterinary medicine for over 20 years at Taylor Crossing Animal Hospital. 44

5 Critical Times to Review Your Insurance by Henry Hernandez, State Farm™ Insurance Agent

Insurance protects you, your family and your home from the unexpected, but it can only do its job if the coverage is up-to-date. Use the occasion of a major life event to make sure your insurance is still suited to your needs. Review your insurance annually or during key life changes such as these:

1. Your family configuration changes. If you’re marrying, expecting a baby, or adopting a child you’ll want to protect your growing family with adequate life insurance and disability income insurance. Losing a family member through death or divorce should also prompt a policy review. Remember to change the beneficiary designations on your existing policies as needed. 2. Your children grow up. When you have a new teen driver, adequate auto insurance is a must. Your State Farm® agent can tell you about discounts that may be available. If your student is leaving for college or has recently graduated, it’s a good time to consider personal property, liability and renters insurance for the new living arrangements. 3. You’re planning a move. Whenever your address changes, reassess your homeowners insurance to make sure the new property is adequately protected. An impending move is also a good opportunity to update your home inventory - whether you’re adding items such as new furniture or scaling back for a move to a smaller home. Even if your address doesn’t change, review your coverage when you add rooms to or significantly renovate your current home.

46

The Pride of Montgomery

4. You’re starting a business. Whether you’re going to rent office space or open a home-based business, include a thorough insurance review in your startup plans. Depending on the size of your operation, you may have to consider property and liability, commercial vehicle and workers’ compensation coverage, as well as a health care plan for employees. If you’re a sole proprietor working from home, be sure to review your homeowners plan to see that your business and equipment are fully covered. 5. You need health insurance options. In today’s rapidly changing health care environment, protecting your family’s health can be a challenge. If your current plan is up for renewal or if you’ve been downsized and need brand-new coverage, take the time to compare plan features against your family’s current or anticipated needs. Whether you have an impending life event or it’s just been awhile since you reviewed your coverage, contact your State Farm agent for assistance. The Insurance Information Institute also offers information on general insurance topics. Got QUESTIONS? Henry Hernandez has ANSWERS! hen looking for a unique gift shop with exceptional customer service, engraving in house and a gift with a “WOW” factor, visit Fine Line Engravers & Gifts.

Your experience begins the minute you walk through the door and are greeted by one of the many happy faces who works there. They do not only greet you, but ask what you are specifically looking for, what is the personality of the person you are buying the gift for and your budget. The combination of the answers always provides a gift that is unique to the person you are giving it to and you feeling great about the gift you gave. In addition and in most cases, you can choose your gift and have it engraved in short time, because everything is done in the store. The owner, Kim Tomberlin, is by no means new to the business! She started her engraving business in 1985. Years later, the first store was opened in the LeCroy Shopping Village in 2001. The store thrived there for ten years at which time she moved it to 1651 Perry Hill Road next to Fresh Market. When Kim is asked what her passion with her business is she is quick to respond, “seeing the customer’s reaction to the finished gift.” One of her favorite things is etching on glass. She loves that she can put as much or little detail on an item. For example, she can take a plain piece of glass and turn it into a treasure. Visit Kim and her staff at her location in Perry Hill Place as they get ready for wedding season. Let them help you find the perfect gift for your occasion!

Bracelets by Geri Cronier Graduate Gemologist, Jewelry Designer, and VP Croniers Fine Jewelry

Today in bracelet design, people are mixing fine and vintage pieces with rough metals, blackening agents around stones, and materials like leather and wood. The juxtaposition of the more casual and natural-looking materials create a less formal, everyday look. The stacking of the many designs gives a person the ability to get a different look each day and has an artistic flair as well. Everyone wants to use their jewelry to make a statement and express their personality in different ways from day to day. The ability to use bracelets as a component part of an overall look makes us all like painters with different colors and designs. Tennis bracelets are just plain lines of diamonds and many people have them and think that they are only dressy. Famous tennis player, Chris Evert, made them sporty and popular for daily wear in the 1980s. Now people seek to stack sterling, leather, solid stone bangles, and vintage designs in addition to blackened almost gothic looking pieces with these to create a modern impression just like a room with furniture from different periods with all the pieces seamlessly flowing. Many people inherit tennis bracelets from mothers or grandmothers and are not sure how to wear them with their existing pieces. Often the person has all white gold jewelry and inherits a yellow gold tennis bracelet. By stacking this piece with a two-tone or blackened bracelet, it makes a new design that is more reasonable and relevant to the person's existing wardrobe. Something on your wrist that says something cool about where you've been and where you're going, so check out the many directions for your own bracelet wardrobe! Many are as low as $200 and create a more earthy or vintage feel paired with the items you already own.

Worth A Look

Go Nude & Go Bold This Summer! by Rebekah Edwards LUSH Makeup Art Go nude and go bold this summer! There is no better time than the summer to go natural. Try a concealer and tinted moisturizer for coverage and an illuminator to brighten your skin. Top off with a finishing powder to decrease the oil and shine, leaving skin with a matte, luminous look. This look is great for any outdoor festivities and won't leave you sweating your makeup off! Finish off your nude look with a bold, beautiful lips! Bright fuschias, pinks, corals and bold reds are a must!!! Avoid a glossy bold lip, which will take away from the matte natural foundation look. Try a matte lipstick, they are bold, yet softer. An easy trick to make the lip color last? Apply foundation all over lips first, then set with powder. Then line and fill the mouth with nude lip liner to prevent lip color from bleeding. A pop of color and a nude face makes you look more youthful, and fashion forward! LL uu ss hh M M aa kk ee uu pp AA rr tt .. cc oo m m 56

Father’s Day Run June 15; 7:30 a.m. Frazer United Methodist Church 6000 Atlanta Highway; 334-272-8622 Frazer’s decision to host a run on Father’s Day weekend was inspired in part by the movie “Courageous,” a Christian film emphasizing the principle that “honor begins at home.” This is an especially vital message for men in our generation when fathers who are absent physically, emotionally or spiritually are devastating more and more children. Our run is open to everyone–men, women, those who have children and those who do not. However, our prayer is that God will use this event in particular to encourage Dad’s to run or walk with their sons or daughters—not only for this one day, but to “run” with them and “walk” with them throughout their lives. It takes a Courageous man to step up and be a true father, but the rewards are well worth the sacrifices! Special prize drawings will be held for father-son/fatherdaughter teams running or walking together. Proceeds go to support Stella’s Voice, Frazer’s mission partner providing protection, housing, care, and a better future for orphaned girls and boys in the Eastern European nation of Moldova.
