A Once-Forgotten Piece

of property along Maxwell Boulevard has been undergoing a facelift over the past few months. The joint effort by Alabama Power and the City of Montgomery was originally planned to be completed as a “four-day park” where clean-up and a vast majority of improvements would take place over four days; however, Mother Nature had different plans. Not to be deterred, the Montgomery Clean City Commission came to the rescue finding volunteers from across the city to help in the effort to renew this amazing green space lost in the urban area of Maxwell Boulevard. Scheduled for completion in May, the park will be home to a one-acre passive park with beautiful bluff views of downtown and the Alabama River. 2

Purchased by the City of Montgomery a number of years ago, the property was a key component of the Maxwell Boulevard Improvement Plan. The property came with an added bonus - the boat ramp. Once the park improvements are complete, the ramp will be for the exclusive use of non-motorized boat launches (kayaks, canoes, dragon boats, etc.). Future plans include docks and the possibility of retail for renting equipment and supplies. The park will serve as a key stop on the new urban trail between Power Magazine Park and Wright Brothers Park, which continues on to the River Walk. Alabama Power spearheaded the clean-up project providing grant money and countless number of volunteer hours. Beginning in February, groups from Maxwell AFB and Alabama Power hauled up almost 50 tons of household debris and other trash. Then, almost 40 Alabama Power Lineman and other staff cleaned the terribly overgrown bluff, creating an amazing view of downtown. Work continued through March and April with groups from the Civil Air Patrol, Montgomery Clean City Commission, Montgomery Rowing Club, Master Gardeners, Vaughn Forest Baptist Church and students from Catholic High School volunteering to complete the clean-up of the park and bluff. New irrigation and sod has been laid and soon, benches and other permanent fixtures will be installed. The Cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Development Department Design Studio is also working with the Salvation Army on possible faĂ§ade improvements to their building and property to add to the aesthetic look of the park, Maxwell Boulevard and surrounding areas. The summer holds a great deal of promise for this once-forgotten piece of Downtown Montgomery. The City invites you to come and enjoy all of what our new downtown riverfront properties have to offer. It's Spring!

Make Time To Enjoy All That Montgomery Has To Offer Cold temperatures are behind us, the Biscuits are playing and spring has sprung. It’s an ideal time to remind everyone to be safe while working outdoors. Be mindful to stay hydrated and aware of conditions that could lead to heat exhaustion. Recently, an expert visited us to share the elements that make people fall in love with cities. Plans are underway to bring several ideas from the drawing board to the streets of Montgomery. Among the proposed events are: Dinner on Dexter, where people dine outside; Blount Park Kite Celebration; World’s Largest Biscuit Eating Contest; Midnight Hank Williams Festival; and Goat Hill Derby, with goats racing from the Capitol to Court Square.

While these are in development, we encourage you to take part in events already on the calendar: the Triathlon, Corporate Challenge, Second Saturdays and various relay walks. No one can complain that there’s nothing fun to do in the Capital of Dreams.

What's In a name?

Navigating Downtown Montgomery

riving the streets of downtown Montgomery can be tricky, especially when it comes to street names. Unlike Birmingham, the streets of downtown are not numbered, but rather have names, and in some cases, the street can change names without notice. The history of how the streets were named is interesting; however, it is doubtful if most people know how the streets received their names.

n order to determine how the streets were named, it is important to remember Montgomery was formed from two cities: New Philadelphia and East Alabama town. The streets of New Philadelphia were drawn in an orderly North, South, East, and West grid. This makes the streets very easy to navigate and give directions. Andrew Dexter named the five most central streets in New Philadelphia, which run East to West, in honor of the first five US Presidents (with the exception of Market Street). Beginning on the north side of the city and moving south there is Jefferson Street, Madison Avenue, Monroe Street, (skip Market/Dexter), Washington Avenue, and Adams Avenue.

It was a very common practice to name streets and other landmarks in honor of Presidents and war heroes. It also was not uncommon for people to hang paintings or prints of Presidents or famous battles in their homes or offices during the 19th Century.

Andrew Dexter. There is also a street named for John Scott, the founder of East Alabama Town, even though it is not as prominent as the one named for Andrew Dexter.

n East Alabama, streets were given more practical names. There is Court Street, named because the first recorded Court House was located right behind where the fountain now stands. Commerce Street was an easy name as it leads to the river and train lines, which were used to generate commerce for the city. Other streets were named for prominent families whose homes graced the streets or who were influential for their time.

riving the streets of downtown, it is easy to see the movement from one of the old towns to the other. For example, Madison Avenue becomes Bibb Street with just a slight shift to the left. Dexter Avenue, being such an important street, stops being Dexter at the fountain. At that point, the streets converge and a person can find themselves on Court, Montgomery, or Commerce Streets. While either of these streets could have been renamed as an extension of Dexter Avenue, each retains their original name.

It’s spring! That means it’s time for the annual behind-theamphitheater River Stomp with one new development. The ARMS Board has decided, now that emphasis has shifted away from Jubilee Cityfest, to partner with the City of Montgomery to begin a new music event called River Jam! ARMS has been working with the city for the past few months on everything from raising funds and contacting talent to stage management and production. The new event, which is free to the public, will be held May 18 at the city’s Riverfront.

It’s spring The main amphitheater stage will feature Nine Days, an alternative rock band that had a Top 40 hit in the nineties entitled Absolutely (Story of a Girl); Hard Rock’s winner of it’s Battle of the Bands, Rosco Bandana; popular zydeco artist Sunpie Barnes and the Louisiana Sunspots; and local blues harp player and vocalist John Bull, with his band featuring guitarist Sheffield Walker. A singer/songwriter stage, which will be located in the old amphitheater at the base of the Commerce Street tunnel, will feature Grammy Award-winning blues artist Alvin Youngblood Hart; Latin jazz artists Roman Street; Americana singer Ana Egge; and rock/country guitarist Jess Meuse. River Jam will begin at 5 p.m. and end around 10 p.m. Coolers are not allowed, but food and beverages will be available for purchase. Bring lawn chairs.

The event will be preceded by the city’s new Riverbend Brewfest, which will begin at 2 p.m. along the Riverfront and feature craft beers and microbrews for tasting. The cost for Brewfest is $20 per person and participants will receive an etched glass for tasting.

River Jam is based on the concept of exposing music lovers to some of the best bands they have never heard before – all for free. You may not be familiar with all the artists, but we guarantee you will be pleased with the talent level.

Beer! It’s been around for centuries, and while American brews can trace their beginnings to immigrants from Europe, the brews that we have become accustomed to have, in the past, born little resemblance to their Old World predecessors. Fortunately, American is now in the midst of a brewing revolution where brewers are producing small batch, craft, seasonal and specialty brews with the depth, complexity and character of their foreign counterparts yet with a decidedly American touch. So, in an effort to provide a unique tasting experience, and in response to more than a few requests, the inaugural Riverbend Brewfest will be held at Montgomery’s Riverfront Park on Saturday, May18th. Join us as breweries of local, regional and national renowned meet on the Riverwalk and offer up a sampling of some of today’s best brews for Montgomery’s connoisseurs of lagers, porters, ales and stouts. Gates will open at 2pm with tasting beginning at 2:15pm. Tickets are $20 and including a commemorative tasting glass. Join us after the Brewfest for the “Brews Cruise” aboard the Harriott II for only $10 with your Riverbend Brewfest ticket ($20 without). Dry Mouth?

Do you know the feeling of having a dry mouth? You know, when you wake up in the morning after you had been sleeping for hours with your mouth open. Your tongue feels like a disgruntled puffer fish and your gums and cheeks burn. Your teeth feel like they are covered with a thin film of tar. It’s hard to swallow, and you know it is not the time to get up close to breathe on anyone. Except on maybe your dog... dogs don’t judge. Now imagine what it would be like to deal with this feeling all the time. That is what it is like for millions of people who deal with dry mouth syndrome. Dry mouth, or xerostomia, is a when your salivary flow is stunted or stopped. There are many reasons why this can happen. Many medications cause dry mouth as well as some medical conditions such as Sjogrens disease and diabetes. It is uncomfortable and annoying. It can also cause tooth decay and gum disease. Saliva is your mouth’s natural bathwater. It’s like a cool rush of clean water hosing away the post mardi gras funk on Bourbon Street. It provides and delivers disease fighting substances throughout

your mouth. It neutralizes acids and washes away food and other debris. When it is stopped or restricted, the natural balance of your mouth shifts. It becomes more acidic and the bacteria and fungus that lives in all of our mouths becomes more concentrated and potent. Some other irritations include a constant sore throat, burning sensation, trouble speaking, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness or dry nasal passages. And ooohhhh, how I have lived, laughed and danced! I created a “Life List” and began checking off items! I have found peace and healing in laughter. I have traveled coast to coast. I have strengthened healthy relationships and realized it was time to break ties with unhealthy ones. I am still working; I will always work to be a better version of me. I lived my teens and twenties in a place of “I cant’s.” I can’t do this or that, I can’t change my lifestyle, I can’t be healthier, but what I was really saying was “I am choosing not to do things differently.” Around the age of 27 with a weight of 267 pounds and the reality of finalizing my divorce, I found myself emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually bankrupt, and I was ready for change! Corey's Mom Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there! My mother and I have been through so much together, and I want to thank her for all she has done for me. She has instilled a tough, hard nose mentality within me, and I thank her so much for that. Many individuals ask me, where do you get your drive, and will to succeed? Well, there’s only one response to that question for me, it’s from my mother! I’ve had the pleasure of watching her reach her own personal goals, and it hasn’t been an easy road. I’ve actually seen my mother stay up countless nights studying to pursue a more fulfilling occupational life, while we were in New Orleans. The outcome of her efforts were graduating at the top of her class and landing a great occupational position within her adult life. I’ve seen her through the ups and downs of dealing with family life, change in occupations, relocation, and life itself. The one thing that remains constant, is that she is consistently a mentally strong, and never steered from her purpose women. This year I’ve been able to have the pleasure of having my mother join me in my own personal occupational venture. In the year 2013, she has become a full time fitness trainer with our company, RezFIT. It’s definitely one of the highlights of my life to have mother alongside me as I fulfill a personal dream of owning my own business, and providing her an avenue of self employment. I know I’ve always been a hand full of a son, but I LOVE you mom. Happy Mother’s Day!

Donna's Mom Everyone has always asked me, "Where do I get this drive to exercise and to motivate others to do the same?" Well, my inspiration has been my mom. Growing up, I always remember my mom exercising. Whether it was walking at the trail or doing sit-ups in the living room watching Dynasty, she has always instilled it in me to workout. I would always want to tag along with my mom and her walking buddies to walk. It also has given us time to spend together and talk. However now the roles have somewhat changed. My mom was always the leader, and now I am leading her. My mom had never been a runner, only a walker. Four years ago she decided she was going to start running, so of course, I started to train her. For the 3 years, I have run side by side with my mom in the Hyundai 5K in October. The first year she got second in her age group. The second year she got first in her age group. The third year she won the Grand Master. I couldn't have been more proud. My mom turned 60 this year and is still going strong. I will continue to run the Hyundai 5K for as long as we can do it together. She has truly been an inspiration to me. I want to be just like her. Recently, we were invited to attend a luncheon at the very swanky Auburn Marriott Opelika Hotel & Conference Center. This place has won national awards for hospitality, and has an awesome pool area. Today we were not here to swim, however. Although it did look very inviting.

We were both very honored to be recognized at the state level for what we basically consider as "doing our job". Without a voice, many of these non-profit organizations like Goodwill and Easter Seals (another organization that was present at the luncheon that day), would not be able to get the word out that they are here to help make our

It's located at 1955 Cobbs Ford Road in the Premiere Place Shopping Center. ow many of us heard the saying “Do not judge a book by its cover?” The message is: if you really have to judge, do a good job judging. t is impossible NOT to judge. For instance, when meeting someone new, I hope you not only judge, but judge well. Don’t rely on your eyes or your feelings to judge, rather, look for the respect the person has for themselves, for their elders, or children, or pets for that matter, to judge.

e judge everywhere… we judge restaurants and are judged in our legal system. In a restaurant, we judge the quality of the food, the ambience and the server, but the consequences are not that harsh for a bad review. We have created a legal system that judges our behavior, and we even have punishments for our behaviors that are not conducive to societal building. The consequences are much more serious in this situation, and therefore should be thought out much more carefully.

onversely, all of us live in a place of anxiety when we know we are being judged. This is the very reason dating is anxiety-provoking. Every job interview is a judging process. Any public speech presumably invokes greater anxiety than death itself. Dr. Martin Luther King did not say, do not judge, but, “judge not by the color of one’s skin color, but of one’s character.” So, judge, and judge well. Dr. Kalai Mugilan received his Doctorate of Health Promotion/ Medical Sociology. He is an Assistant Professor at South University and the co-founder of Varietas LLC Diversity Training, Certification, Staff Augmentation, which is located in Montgomery. Isaiah's Restaurant

Isaiah’s Restaurant is the home of Johnnie Mae’s Famous Peach Cobbler and Lemon-Peppered Catfish and Collards, which happen to be two of the 100 dishes you must eat in Alabama before you die. According to noted African American Historian Dr. Richard Bailey, Isaiah’s Restaurant is located on the site (previously known as Mildred’s Grove) where the first observance of the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation took place in Montgomery on January 1, 1866. Isaiah and Johnnie Chambers Sankey wanted to build something of significance that would help change the landscape in a previously neglected and forgotten neighborhood. Their goal was to build a first-class establishment in one of the poorest census tracts in Montgomery County. It has been their pleasure to entertain guests from places such as France, Germany, England, Italy, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Ghana West Africa. Recipe of the Month: Isaiah’s Mac & Cheese

This recipe makes a large order for family gatherings. 4 cups macaroni 2 lb. Velveeta Cheese, softened 12 oz. can Carnation milk 12 oz. hot water 1 1/2 sticks of butter, melted 1 Tbs black pepper 1 tsp salt 6 eggs

Cook macaroni until tender. Drain. Add all ingredients to macaroni while still hot, except eggs. Stir until all ingredients are blended well and cheese is completely melted. Add eggs and stir well. Pour into two medium deep-dish aluminum pans or your favorite baking dish. Makes about 30 servings.

Is It Time For Your Harvest? by Allen Bowen

The changing of the seasons presents an opportunity to reflect on the fact that God has an

almanac. Perhaps modern technology has given you a case of amnesia, but for those of us that can remember, an almanac was that little book that helped us determine the best time of year to plant the crops we intended to harvest. It is a calendar that presents the seasons and cycles of a year. You see, the principle of seed time and harvest will not override the understanding of time and purpose. God does everything according to His almanac of time and purpose.

In autumn, you turn over the ground so last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stalks and stems can become next yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

harvest. Broken clods freshly turned, filled with crushed cornstalks and covered with manure, form the mulch you need to prepare the ground and replenish the starving soil after the previous yield. Like the ground that has given much and received little, you too need to be broken and turned over, allowed to rest for a time, and prepared for the next season of yield. Perhaps you have just completed a time of being turned over and undergoing manure-filled experiences. That period was just a prerequisite for a miracle! Thank God for seasons of rest He gives to His children. If the ground produced without ever resting, it would soon be stripped of all precious minerals it needs to productive.

I have learned through life lessons that somewhere on the other side of a tremendous test, is

the harvest of your dream. If you have planted the seeds of a promise and watered them thoroughly with tears of struggle, then get ready cause your time for your harvest is near. Weeping MAY be endured for a night, but joy cometh in the morning!!! Woe unto the person who has seeds without water. Your tears of struggle become the irrigation of the Holy Spirit. It is through your own tearfilled struggles that God directs the waters of life of life to the field of your dreams. They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. Psalm 126:5

Trinity Trinity Presbyterian School More than four decades ago, a group of community leaders and parents gathered together with the vision of creating a school that would combine challenging academics with a Christian perspective.

Trinity Presbyterian School is the result of that vision and is an accredited K4-12th grade school for over 900 students.

The faculty and administration at Trinity work and live by the school’s mission statement: “To glorify God by providing for students the highest quality college preparatory education, training them in the Biblical world and life view, thus enabling them to serve God in spirit, mind, and body.” Trinity was the first school in the River Region to implement an Apple 1:1 Laptop Program. Starting August 2012, each child in grades 6-12 received Macbooks for their everyday use. Each classroom at Trinity has a SmartBoard, and the entire campus has wireless internet. This creates a 21st Century learning environment in every classroom for teachers and students. Trinity is located on one campus so older students are able to mentor younger students.

Trash to Treasure! by Kasey Hope

Most art teachers are natural hoarders.. I admit I am too! I always think that surely we can do something cool with these scraps. These kids proved me right when they took my trash and turned it into some super-cool art pieces. You can try the same thing at home! Here's what you need... 1) Any old wood scrap 2) ANY kind of paper. For example, tissue paper ( left over from gift bags maybe), newspaper, scrapbook paper, phone book pages, etc. 3) ModPodge 4) Old paint brush to use with ModPodge

Then let your imagination run wild! Lay on your background pieces first. Paint ModPodge directly on the wood, lay down your paper, and then paint ModPodge on top of it again. After the background is done you can began adding pieces for your focal point. Again, ModPodge needs to be applied underneath the paper and again on top of each piece. Then, just let it dry for a few hours. It will dry completely clear and you will have a cool piece of art!

Recently, I read and article that was interesting to me as a veterinary professional. Cats have now become one of the most popular pets in America. In a lot of ways, it makes sense. As Baby Boomers age but continue to work and move away from single-family residences, a cat becomes the perfect bark-free and walk-free companion. It makes sense as well that a lot of busy moms find that cats satisfy the child’s need for a pet but require less maintenance. I must warn, that as a veterinarian, cats are independent but still need medical care just like dogs. Cats are also great at hiding illnesses that can turn fatal if not treated. If you are a cat lover but have not had regular veterinary care for your purring friend call your veterinarian today. 1. Insurance 101 More Accidents Happen When Teens

Are Out of School

by Henry Hernandez, State Farm™ Insurance Agent The odds of a teenage driver having an accident are high. According to Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) research, teens spend 44 percent more hours driving each week in the summer than during the school year. Furthermore, 16-yearolds have higher crash rates than drivers of any other age. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among 15- to 20year olds. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation almost 3,500 drivers in this age group died in motor vehicle crashes in 2006, and an additional 272,000 were injured. In the same year, drivers aged 15 to 20 accounted for 12.9 percent of all drivers involved in fatal crashes and 16 percent of all drivers involved in police-reported crashes. “Teens think they are indestructible and often engage in risktaking behavior,” said Loretta Worters, Vice President of the Insurance Information Institute (III). “They are distracted by things they shouldn’t do in a car like eating, talking on their cell phones, text messaging, talking to friends in the car – and they often don’t wear their seatbelts.” It’s important for families with teen drivers to educate them about driving safely and to make sure that they, along with their teen drivers, are properly insured.

Protection for your teen

The III recommends taking the following steps to ensure the safety of your teen: Pick a safe car. The type of car a young person drives can dramatically affect the price of insurance. You and your teenager should choose a car that is easy to drive and would offer protection in the event of a crash. You should avoid small cars and those with high performance images that might encourage speed and recklessness. Trucks and SUVs should also be avoided, since they are more prone to rollovers. Have your teen take a driver’s education course. A teen who has learned to drive though a driver’s education course is viewed more favorably by insurers than a teen who has been taught by his or her parents. Indeed in some states, teens must take a driver’s education course if they want to get a license at age 16; otherwise, they have to wait until they are 18. Enroll your teen in safe driver programs. Some insurers offer “safe driver” programs. Teen participants in these programs sign contracts stating that they will not, for instance, drink and drive. Check whether your insurance company has such a program. If your teenager completes the program, you may be eligible for a discount. Talk to your teen about the dangers of combining driving with alcohol, drugs, lack of sleep and distractions. Teach your children about the dangers of drinking and driving and other distractions. was drinking, using a cell phone, text messaging, playing the radio, or talking to friends in the backseat. Also, teens should be careful not to create distractions and to exhibit safe behavior when they are passengers in their friends’ cars. Be a good role model. New drivers learn by example, so if you drive recklessly, your teenage driver may imitate you. Always wear your seatbelt and never drink and drive. Graduated driver’s license programs. New drivers are restricted from certain activities, such as driving with passengers, until they have had their licenses for a set period, such as six months. A number of states have reduced teen accidents by restricting the amount of time new drivers may be on the road without supervision. If you live in one of these states, ask if any discounts are available. If your state does not have such a program, you can still institute this same policy with your own children.

Protection for you

The III also offers the following suggestion to help you protect yourself financially while minimizing the cost of adding a teen to your insurance: Insure your son or daughter on your own policy. It is generally cheaper to add your teenagers to your insurance policy than for them to purchase their own. If your teen owns a car, insure it with your company so that you can get a multi-policy discount. Increase your liability insurance. State minimums for liability insurance will probably not be enough to fully protect you from lawsuits should your teen get into an accident. Many vehicles today are worth more than $15,000, and medical bills for injuries could easily exceed $20,000 for one person. If your teen is found negligent in an accident and the damages exceed your insurance limits, you will be financially responsible and can be sued in court for those amounts not covered by your insurance. Raise your deductible. Going from a $250 to $500 or $1,000 deductible can save you 10 percent to 20 percent on your premium. You can use that savings to increase your liability insurance. Let your insurer know if your teenager is going away to school. You may be eligible for lower premiums once your teen heads to college, providing he or she leaves the car behind. Many insurers will reduce rates for students attending a school at least 100 miles away from home and who do not have a car on campus. Encourage your teen to get good grades and to take a driver training course. Most companies will give discounts for getting at least a “B” average in school and for taking a recognized driver training course.

It's time to change up what you had left over from last year. Try an anti-aging moisturizer with SPF. More than four decades since CSN first harmonized in Laurel Canyon, and played their first-ever concert as a trio at the legendary Woodstock festival, its members continue a creative partnership that is one of the most influential and enduring in music. David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash have each been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame two times-once with Crosby, Stills & Nash, and a second time with The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, and The Hollies, respectively.
