In September 2007, Specialized Bicycles collaborated with Google and Goodby, Silverstein & Partners to launch the Pedal-Powered Machine Contest. The contest challenged inventors, entrepreneurs, students and tinkerers of all kinds to create a pedal-powered solution for offsetting climate change. The results were greater and farther reaching than expected. Out of all the entries coming in from across the globe, the deserving prize went to a five-person team of designers from IDEO who invented the Aquaduct, a mobile vehicle for transporting and filtering drinking water. Today, the Aquaduct is being considered for real-world application—an innovation with the potential to change the lives of over one billion people in the world who live without access to clean drinking water. Witnessing the power of the bicycle as a vehicle for change continues to push us to make even bigger

strides. Using the Globe line as fodder for further environmental and social activism, we partnered with Bicycling Magazine’s BikeTown and NATO to donate 50 Globes to a local orphanage in war-torn Afghanistan and to the Afghani National Cycling Federation. Our Globe bicycles have always been the most viable tool for commuting and general transportation because of their utility, accessibility and reliability, but in parts of the world where owning a car is a luxury enjoyed by few, these bikes are a blessing and an opportunity.
