Visionary Representation “Craft Museum”

Educate the public about the importance of human civilization and appreciate the role that artefacts have played in history". This drawing expresses my expectations and fits my goals for the Craft Museum. The great civilizations of our species must be remembered in the minds of everyone, to understand the lives, inventions and wisdom of the ancients, to respect the cultures and customs of all races, and thus to cherish the comfort of the present time. The design of the pavilion also echoes the theme of the museum, where trees and their wood have played an important role in human life throughout history. From the Paleolithic period onwards, wood has been one of our most important building materials, both for construction and for the manufacture of tools, weapons and furniture. Wooden pavilions also blend in with nature and give a touch of peace in a noisy city. The pavilion functions as a display area, a small stage and a resting area. The museum officials can exhibit paintings or exhibits here so that users can enjoy the beautiful artwork while taking a break, and there is also a user guide and a guided tour of the museum, as well as postcards for purchase.

MUSEUM CRAFTS

TRADITIONAL ARTS & CRAFTS OF MALAYSIA Negrito aborigines are considered to be one of the first groups of people to inhabit the Malaysian peninsula. When the Proto-Malays, made up of seafarers and farmers, came to the peninsula they sent the Negritos into the jungles and hills. The Proto-Malays came from China and were technologically advanced, especially in comparison to the Negritos. After the Proto-Malays came to the DeuteroMalays, which were made up of many different people Arabs, Chinese, Indians, Proto-Malays, and Siamese. The Deutero-Malays were proficient in their use of iron and when they united with Indonesians, they combined to make up the people are known today as the Malay. These are some of the traditional arts, crafts which are well known in Malaysia. They keep us connected to our roots and build our cultural identity. While some of these crafts stand strong against the tests of time, others are faced with challenges as their artisans struggle to keep the cultural heritage alive.

GÖSTA SERLACHIUS MUSEUM & THE COPENHAGEN ROYAL ARENA

Gösta Serlachius Museum / MX_SI CULTURAL ARCHITECTURE Gösta Serlachius Museum at Mänttä-Vilppula is an art museum based on the collection of Gösta Serlachius Fine Art Foundation, one of the most notable private art collections in the Nordic countries. The Art Museum Gösta is located in the midst of beautiful lakeside nature. The old estate of the paper mill owner formed the earliest part of the museum. A new section, the so-called pavilion, complements the museum complex. The Serlachius Museum Gösta presents art from Finland’s Golden Age, but evocative contemporary art from Finland and further afield also has an important role to play. The museum, which opened in 2014, is an interesting example of modern wooden architecture. Its design has enabled the Art Museum to expand its operations into the field of contemporary art. The Art Museum is located in a setting of cultural and historical value on the shores of Lake Melasjärvi.

DESIGN CONCEPT

Serlachius held an international architectural competition in 20102011 for the design of the museum’s expansion. The competition was won by MX_SI, which is a Barcelona-based architectural firm. The new building is set in an abstract petrified forest and forms an entrance square with the historically important Joennimei estate. The spatial richness resulting from the fluid and continuous dialogue between the interior and exterior environment, as well as the harmony of the projected volumes and how the building adapts to the landscape of the surrounding area. The structure consists of laminated wooden columns and beams. They support the building, but also create its unique appearance. The alternating wood and glass surfaces give the building a sense of rhythm and connect it to the surrounding park.

PROGRAM & SPATIAL PLANNING Gösta Serlachius Museum / MX_SI

The Copenhagen Royal Arena / 3XN, HKS Concert House Danish firm 3XN has completed a large sporting and cultural arena in Copenhagen, featuring a glazed curtain wall wrapped in timber fins arranged to allow partial views of the interior. The 35,000-square-metre Royal Arena is situated in the Danish capital’s residential Ørestad Syd area and was designed by 3XN together with global architecture firm HKS to host concerts and

international sporting events. Its location in a densely urban area prompted the project team to focus on ensuring that the venue contributes to the local community by encouraging public engagement with its spaces and facilities.

The arena’s exterior design is also intended to present a more transparent and welcoming presence than typical stadiums, with the glazed surfaces and slatted timber sheath allowing views inwards and outwards.

ORNAMENTAL FACADE The Copenhagen Royal Arena / 3XN, HKS

My ornamental facade will will have a similar structure to arena, with a curtain wall wrapped in walnut wood fins, allowing a partial view of the interior, and the timber fins can also be used as shading device to improve the daylight quality of interior.

DAYLIGHT Timber fins can be the solar shading system that uses a series of vertical blades to control the amount of sunlight and solar heat entering a building.

DESIGN CONCEPT Located between Balai Seni Negara and Istana Budaya, the craft museum showcases some of the traditional arts, crafts and trades that are widely known in Malaysia. Malaysia is a complex, multi-ethnic country, consisting of three main ethnic groups. Malay, Chinese and Indian, with diverse cultural backgrounds. In order to adapt the architectural style of the museum to the nearby buildings, the local culture is the main factor influencing the architectural design of Malaysia, in terms of the form and impression of the building structure. After Malaysia's independence, most architects explored modern architectural styles of building design, which is heavily influenced by Western art, Malaysian architecture was designed by blending elements of Islam and Western architecture to form a uniquely Malaysian modern architecture.

LAYERED ROOF The multi-layered roof that was built applied designs of the traditional Malay vernacular architecture, which also increasingly seen in other buildings that were constructed during the period between the 1970s to 1980s. The tiered roofs are interpretations of the vernacular architecture, but it is smaller in scale and has close-proximity with the ground. the act of implementation of the vernacular architecture aim was to solidify Malaysia's architecture identity. TIMBER FIN Timber Fin reflected the feature of traditional Malay house.

3a. SURROUNDING LANDSCAPE The presence of the greenery surrounding the craft museum brings liveliness into the area. plantations are found to be welcoming the public who enter the area. The exterior of the museum is accentuated by numerous vertical timber fins that provide a structural vision of modern art in the building. The vertical details are also one of the features that reflect the traditional Malay houses.

The structure consists of solid timber columns and beams that protrude and combine with the large curtain walls to further enhance its visual height. They support the building and create its unique appearance. The alternating wood and glass surfaces give the building a sense of rhythm and connect it to the surrounding landscape. Although the building uses a glass curtain wall, the material used is tinted glass, which reduces the amount of heat entering the space while allowing more natural light to enter the interior spaces, and the windows are further shielded with translucent curtains to reduce the amount of light and heat entering the space. A curtain wall wrapped with timber fins provides a partial view of the interior. As the timber fins also serve as a shading device, its vertical blades control the amount of sunlight and solar heat entering the room, therefore improves the quality of daylight in the room.
