The first expression, Beirut is a beautiful harbour city, but it has been affected by the accidental explosion at the port last year, which has left the city in a state of disrepair. It led to destruction of houses and left people homeless. The commercial center also affected by the explosion, leaving the city unable to function. Beirut is the capital of Lebanon, the seat of government and has a major impact on the Lebanese economy. The city, however, suffered a devastating tragedy in 2020. A massive explosion killed more than 200 people, 12,000 buildings and caused more than 300,000 people to leave their homes. The aim of this project is to provide ideas for rebuilding this coastal city. I see this plan as focusing primarily on restructuring Beirut's economy, improving the city's tourism industry and attracting more economic sources.

In this project, my first thought of the solutions are to first fix the country's economy, by restore and rebuild the commercial center to attract more tourists and stimulate tourism and to build a monuments to those who sacrificed in the explosion and has become a tourist attraction. Next is the rehabilitation of the port so that the port could function properly and the surrounding area could be developed into a commercial and tourist area. After that, the places of worship was rebuilt because my concept is that religious beliefs are very important and cannot be destroyed. There is also the important issue of the need for the country to strengthen its own military forces in case of emergency, because of the constant wars in the countries surrounding Lebanon. The aircraft were used to represent the country's ability to strengthen its military forces against war.

As mentioned previously, I got the idea to promote the economic development of Beirut through the redevelopment of the commercial center and transport service. I hope that in the future Beirut will become a very developed city, that the success of the commercial center development will gradually turn the surrounding area into a financial center. Because of the war in neighbouring countries, Lebanon hosts many refugees affected by the war, so I hope that in the future, the housing problems of the people will be solved and that the standard of living will be better.

urban

Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, is not only the seat of the Lebanese government, but also has a significant impact on the Lebanese economy. But the city, which was named one of the world's most dynamic cities in 2009, has lost its colour after a series of man-made events. The aim of this project is to give ideas to rebuild this coastal city. The plan focuses primarily on restructure Beirut's economy, improve the city's tourism industry and attract more economic sources.

URBAN STRATEGY

SITE SELECTED In our group, we divide masterplan into zones and individual group members are responsible for one of these zones. Starting from previous project, my main focus has been on the restructuring economy of the Beirut Port after the disaster, from which the restructuring of tourism development was chosen as the main programme.

DESIGN STRATEGY The economy is dominated by tourism, finance and other service industries. In recent years, Lebanon’s economy has been deteriorating, with the massive explosion of the port of Beirut in 2020 compounded by the outbreak of the covid epidemic, adding to Lebanon’s already difficult situation. As the economy continued to decline, people began to worry about their standard of living. They went out into the streets to protest and demonstrate, making it impossible for communities to function properly. Not only that. the Syrian refugees in Lebanon are affecting the social fabric of the country, and if the refugees are not addressed in a timely manner, there will be increasing tensions between the refugees and the local population, which will pose a security risk in the future.

URBAN STRATEGY ZONING With regard to my urban strategy, I have planned a community that is suitable for participation in tourism

development. In my opinion, the community can be the main body of

tourism

development,

involving the

community in the economic activities of tourism to achieve greater economic benefits. From the tourist's point of view, community involvement can give them a better understanding of the local culture. The whole environment can be divided into three main areas: the commercial area, the community and the disaster relief area

URBAN STRATEGY

CIRCULATION For the circulation, the orange dash line is represent the highway that across my site. The road is also a necessary route to the port and is therefore heavily trafficked. The blue dash line is the path that transport takes to get to the commercial area and the community. Where pedestrian access is blocked by a road, it is connected by a footbridge, forming a complete circulation. And the pink dot line is the bicycle pathway.

INTERGRATED SYSTEM

This diagram shows the transit hubs for this site. there are three transit hubs at this site and all three are within walking distance. The population can take these transportation service to other areas of the city.

URBAN STRATEGY The economy is dominated by tourism, finance and other

service industries. In recent years, Lebanon’s economy has been deteriorating, with the 2020 epidemic outbreak compounded by the massive explosion of the port of Beirut, adding to Lebanon’s already difficult situation. The whole environment can be divided into three main areas: commercial area, community and the disaster relief area. The commercial area has a strong impact on tourism. The rise of tourism inevitably leads to the commodification of the culture of the destination. In order to create the ideal

tourist

attraction,

although

the

destination

community reconstructs the local culture, this does not mean that it is a process of cultural infiltration. On the contrary, local traditional culture is presented to the public in a commercialised form, contributing even more to the revival of local culture. The community can be the mainstay of tourism development, involving the community in the economic

activities of tourism and the community's participation in the development of tourism, in order to achieve greater economic benefits. From the tourist's point of view, community

participation

can

give

them

a

better

understanding of the local culture. Since the outbreak of the conflict in Syria, Lebanon has become the country with the highest density of refugees per capita in the world and has been struggling to cope with a crisis that shows no signs of slowing down. The number of refugees from Syria now equals almost a quarter of Lebanon's resident population. The Syrian refugees in Lebanon are affecting the social fabric of the country, and if the refugees are not addressed in a timely manner, there will be increasing tensions between the refugees and the local population, which will pose a security risk in the future. No one would want to travel in a place where security is extremely precarious.

BUILDING STRATEGY

DESIGN CONCEPT

MEMORIAL PARK When improperly stored ammonium nitrate exploded in the port of Beirut on 4 August 2020, the city was devastated. more than 200 people were killed, thousands injured and some 300,000 displaced. A year after the explosion that destroyed Beirut, a

memorial park is envisaged to honour the victims and survivors.

CULTURAL MARKET A cultural market will be established next to the Memorial Park, providing a service for visitors or

locals to buy tributes to the Memorial Park or a place to buy religious art and traditional crafts. In addition to this, it could also become a base for celebrations.
