FLOCK OF CHICKENS

A passion for growth in Kenya

Provide a sustainable source of food and income

A flock of chickens is far more than some hens, a rooster and a daily supply of fresh eggs. Your gift will help train families and community groups to raise poultry and sell surplus stock and eggs in the marketplace.

FRUIT TREES

$25 per share / FS0901 $135 per flock / FS0902

A few years ago, our local partner in Kenya, Anglican Development Services – Nyanza (ADS), started working with communities to alleviate child malnutrition. They decided to switch from growing tobacco to growing passion fruit—which is not only good to eat but in high demand throughout Kenya and on the export market. Through the program, farmers learned to control pests; prune the branches to get a good harvest; separate the fruit based on size, color and ripeness; and share what they learned with their neighbors. The farmers also started a tree nursery, where they grow avocados, mangoes, papaya, citrus and forest trees, and created a team of grafters who create stronger trees by combining disease-resistant local trees with higher-yielding foreign varieties.

Enrich a family’s food supply and farmland

Your gift of lemon, mango, avocado and banana trees will provide a long-term, sustainable source of nutrition and income. Fruit trees planted on hillsides are also used for erosion control, helping farmers maintain their land. $35 per share / FS2401

Farmers who had been growing tobacco for many years told us that they were so much happier now—no longer at the mercy of the tobacco companies and able to make good money for their families. Laughing, one man said, “When my wife washes my clothes, she will now sometimes find change in the pockets.”

Provide nece

Success Story:

Access to clean water and sanitation in Nicaragua In remote Nicaraguan communities, a lack of clean water and poor sanitation are major obstacles that people face. The Murillo family of Camoapa was having serious health problems because of their latrine’s unsanitary conditions. Maria Murillo said that her children were constantly ill and simply using the dilapidated structure was a daily challenge for everyone. Fortunately, Maria’s family was able to receive a new latrine through Episcopal Relief & Development and our partner, El Porvenir, a community-based organization that facilitates the construction of latrines and fresh water wells in Nicaragua. The Murillo family also learned about basic hygiene and was trained on latrine upkeep. Maria said that her family is now much happier and healthier. “We feel that our lives have changed,” she says. The Murillo family is an inspiring example of how simple gifts such as clean water and proper hygiene can keep an entire family healthy.

rainwater harvesting Provide access to fresh, clean water

After being collected in catchment tanks or underground capture points, rainwater is filtered and treated—supplying a community with safe drinking water year round. $400 for one water catchment system / PH9134

Tapping into success in Burundi Though there is high rainfall in Kagoti, Burundi, the rainwater soaks into the ground or flows down the hillsides. As a result, most people have to get their water from streams and creeks, which are easily contaminated. With technical assistance from the local water agency and support from our partner, the Anglican Church of Burundi, Kagoti community members built a capture point underground to gather the relatively clean rainwater. After the water is captured, it is filtered with layers of clay and sand before flowing out through PVC pipes. Community members also built a fence around the area to protect it from people walking over it, digging near it and from animals. In Kagoti, water now gushes out of five taps on the sunny hillside. Various community members told us how happy they were to have a reliable source of clean water. Illness in the area has decreased, and the protected spring saves everyone a great deal of time. Community leaders are now planning to build more water points in neighboring communities. Gifts such as rainwater harvesting can help people around the world use natural resources to provide clean water for their families and communities.

lifelong health Success Story:

Healing a hurting world—literally! In the small village in India where Beti and Mehdi live, the nearest health center is almost four miles away. With no access to public transportation, the only option for them and their neighbors was visiting the local quacksalver, who charges excessively for simple first-aid treatments such as cleaning a wound or providing antacids. Beti and Mehdi heard they could learn to treat minor illnesses and ailments through a first-aid training program with our local partner, the Church Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA). As community health workers in their village, Beti and Mehdi now help their neighbors in times of minor medical emergencies. Beti recently treated a boy who fell down on his way to school. She sanitized his wound with antiseptic and covered it with a bandage, free of charge! Said Mehdi, “We feel happy that we cured so many people of our community. Even though it is small, we couldn’t do this before.” Their story shows how two women and one Gift for Life can improve the lives of an entire community.

But then she heard about a local women’s group offering micro-credit loans and business training in cooperation with ECLOF Peru, Episcopal Relief & Development’s local partner. Bring Gifts for Life to your parish Parishes all over the country are finding new ways to support Gifts for Life—from making ornaments to hosting shrimp-boil dinners. We’re excited to share one of these inspiring parish stories with you.

The Church of Saint Paul, Hamilton and Wenham, Massachusetts

The Schmit Sisters’ Malaria Net Stocking Project Marie Antonioli and Tom Schmit have always tried to teach their children about helping others. One evening, Tom challenged his daughters – Gina, Sophia and Olivia – to consider ways they could encourage their congregation’s involvement with Gifts for Life. The Schmit sisters did not have to look far for role models. They were well aware of the work being done by the Episcopal women’s group to produce items for sale at farmers markets and local craft shows. With these members in mind, the girls decided to use their sewing talents to make tree ornaments in the shape of Christmas stockings using mosquito netting. In mid-November, the three sisters announced their project in church, set up a booth in the basement and began their coffee hour sales under the canopy of a mosquito net they had purchased. The girls sold each stocking for $12, enough for a malaria net to be purchased through the Gifts for Life catalog. In just one month, they were able to raise $700! Through Gifts for Life and the generous support of their Episcopal community, Gina, Sophia and Olivia are making a big difference.
