Success Story:
REFORESTATION PROJECT IN SRI LANKA Since the 2004 tsunami, Episcopal Relief & Development has collaborated with many organizations in Sri Lanka on their post-disaster efforts. One of these partners is the Centre for Environmental Justice (CEJ), a local grassroots organization that focuses on nature conservation. Together, we are working to reforest the coastal greenbelt as a buffer from any future tidal waves or tsunamis. So far, CEJ has mobilized community networks and youth groups to plant over 17,000 mangrove trees along the southern and eastern coasts of Sri Lanka. It hasn’t been an easy task — as we had to get permission from local government authorities and convince the local people to get onboard — but it has been 100% worth it. If you came to Sri Lanka today, you’d see what a world of difference this project is already making in safeguarding the coast and its people from future disasters.

Success Story:
PROVIDING RELIEF DURING THE EBOLA CRISIS Since last year’s Ebola outbreak, Episcopal Relief & Development has been working with our church partners to bring support to people in affected areas — especially villages that would otherwise have been forgotten. When the outbreak first occurred, we were able to mobilize quickly because we had items supplied through Gifts for Life on hand. For example, our office in Ghana provided people with medicine, protective equipment, food and other resources at lightning speed. We also utilized networks made possible through Gifts for Life — including women’s groups, farm cooperatives and community development groups — to deliver supplies and educate people on ways to avoid Ebola. More than a year after the initial Ebola outbreak, the epidemic is mostly contained, and the number of new cases has plummeted. Now, thanks to your compassionate support, we are helping people rebuild their lives and create brighter futures for their families.

Success Story:
LITERACY PROGRAM FOR ADULTS IN VANUATU On an island in the Vanuatu group called Maewo, you’ll find Lisa. At just 18 years old, she’s teaching 28 eager aspiring carpenters to read and write. As one of the best-educated people in her village, Lisa was selected to go to a training course and then pass on her knowledge to the students of the local Rural Training Centre, where young people who have missed out on formal education can learn vocational skills. Lisa’s confidence as a teacher is growing every day, and she is enjoying her new role. The students love her calm and kind approach to a subject they have struggled with in the past. Her story shows how literacy programs for adults can dramatically improve the skills and health of people in isolated communities like these — where secondary education is usually beyond the reach of most families.

OUR PARISHES LOVE GIFTS FOR LIFE!
Every year, parishes across the country find creative and inspiring ways to support Gifts for Life. We’re excited to share some of these wonderful success stories with you — and hope you will share your story with us next year!
Featured Parish:
ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH IN VISTA, CA Five-year-old Blanca Camacho and her three-year-old sister Annia saw pictures of animals and children in last year’s Gifts for Life catalog and decided they wanted to send a goat to children in Africa. To earn the money, they asked their friends in the congregation to chip in. With the help of their mother and grandmother, they created a poster to hang in the parish hall during Advent, designed T-shirts to wear during church and distributed small handouts to the parishioners. Anyone who donated to their project received a handwritten thank-you note, plus a list of local goat milk cheeses compiled by their Aunt Kiki, a local cheese monger — to connect people personally to the benefits of having a goat. With the help of the people at All Saints’, Blanca and Annia raised enough for two goats and even a pig — and they want to do the same next year!
More inspiring parishes ST. TIMOTHY’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN ST. LOUIS, MO
