Winter Wedding COLOUR PALETTES
This time of year is so colourful, you have hundreds of classic combinations available to you, but what if these have been overdone? Or what if your favourite colour doesn’t work? No need to worry, we have a list of less common colour combos that would look great on your big day.
G R E E N , B L U E & S I LV E R This is a sophisticated colour combination that your guests won’t expect, it’s a far cry from the classic green and red and it will look fab on your wedding day. Try blue and silver centrepieces and lots of greenery around the room.
S I LV E R , G O L D & C R E A M Metallics are an extremely popular trend this year popping up everywhere from your local shop window to the Paris fashion week runway. You could decorate your venue with silver fairy lights and gold centerpieces with simple cream table cloths. Rose gold is another popular trend so you could swap it for the gold if you felt like it. Always remember, when it comes to metallics less is usually more.
TURQUOISE & ORANGE This very unexpected colour combination works a treat in decorating a venue. These colours scream trendy and will make your venue super modern looking. It’s a fab colour scheme and definitely not boring. Try turquoise table runners with orange roses in the centrepieces.
RED, CREAM & WHITE This fab colour scheme will give a rich, wintry feel to your venue while still keeping peoples mind on the event itself, you don’t want your guests feeling like it’s all about Christmas. Try white table cloths, cream chair sashes and poinsettias or red roses as your main flower of choice.
RED, WHITE & GREEN This colour scheme is a classic homage to the holidays and it looks absolutely gorgeous. There’s a reason it’s the most popular colour combo for this time of year. Try white table cloths and centrepieces, and dot the room with plenty of holly and mistletoe. You could use baby’s breath and red roses for the floral arrangements. 10

t is not always an easy task to choose the exact style of wedding cake you would like for your big day. Pinterest boards and Instagram stories, offer so many options. Do you want something
classical and elegant, or modern and colourful? Most couples will choose something to reflect the style of their wedding, or their personality or the venue itself or even all three. Here are some of our favourite designs to offer some inspiration for your big day.

SEASONAL Scheming
By Ann Cronin
The colour combos and shade schemes we’re loving for a winter wonderland wedding. Winter wonderland Channel your inner Elsa from Frozen and deck out your wedding day in a colour scheme that is fit for an ice queen. Light blue with ivory or white will ensure your day’s ambiance is nothing short of a winter wonderland. Frosted overcasts of snow-spray or silver detailing will only add to the overall atmosphere.
Golden additions ‘Tis the season for incorporating some dazzling golden elements into your colour schemes. Whether you want it as a block colour of your day or simply as detailing throughout your décor, there is never a season in which it is more appropriate than now.
Deep and dark A winter wedding allows you to get away with deeper and richer tones in your colour palette. Deep burgundy or navy will go down well combined with ivory or gold, while plums and purples team well with grey.
Nature’s colour palette Draw inspiration from this season’s natural shading and base your day around earth tones. Shades of green, brown and white or cream combined will be representative of the earth’s tones and ensure your wedding carries a contemporary Christmas ambiance. Think snow dusted foliage and timber tones to ensure you’re capturing a natural beauty in your colour choices. 20
A tinge of tartan Ensure the Christmas vibes are well received by incorporating some tartan elements into your big day’s décor and attire. Green and red or red and navy tartan are festive stables, but you could also opt for more earthly tones to keep things subdued and subtle.
Silver simplicity A touch of silver is never a bad idea at a winter wedding, but it is also possible to base your entire colour scheme around this. Greys and silvers with white or ivory is the perfect cool toned combo for a festive celebration.

Winter warmers To ensure your guests aren’t scathed by the cold temperatures, favours such as gloves, scarves, blankets, hand warmers, hats and socks are always a good choice and will be very popular among your guests. These are particularly successfully if you’re quests are giving you and you husband a sparkler send-off or have to parts of the day outdoors.
Hot chocolate station What better way to treat your guests than with a cup of one of winter’s most beloved beverages? Setting up a self-service bar for hot cholate and other toasty beverages for your big day is a guaranteed success. It will keep guests warm and serve as a delicious break from the stronger drinks that people have been drinking all day.
FESTIVE FAVOURS FOR YOUR Winter Wedding By Ann Cronin
Christmas weddings offer extra creative license when it comes to selecting seasonally appropriate wedding favours, and we’ve compiled our recommendations for adding some extra festive flair to big day. Christmas crackers Having your guests split Christmas crackers containing seating plans, the running order or wedding programs is a great extra festive addition or quirk to the day. Alternatively you could fill them with sprigs of mistletoe or holly, sweets and a small gift to remember the day by.
Seasonal sweets Candy canes, gingerbread men, mince pies; the list of Christmas time sweet treats is endless. Whether you wish to pack each of your guests a goodie bag full of festive treats, have them served as nibbles throughout your big day or have a candy cart present for all of your guests to graze away at.
Personalised baubles Having each of your guests take home a bauble which is personalised is a way of ensuring everyone remembers your big day and has a keepsake that can hang proudly on their tree yearly. Alternatively, you could gift your bridal party with personalised high-end glass baubles, or have a Christmas tree at your reception hosting baubles for each guests seating place. 24
Festive fragrances Giving your guests a parting present that encapsulates the winter scent is sure to go down a hit. Whether it’s a cinnamon or ginger scented candle or a nature-based potpourri pack, ensure your guests take the seasonal scent of your winter wedding home with them with this parting present.
Kids’ corner Set up your kids table with festive fun such as themed colouring sheets, cookie decorating, Christmas card making or even appoint them with the task of writing to Santa telling him all about your big day. Send them each home with a goodie-bag of sweet treats or a personalised keepsake from your special day.

Postage For every save-the-date, invitation and thank you card sent out to your guests there will be stamp costs involved and their cost can add up to a more significant digit very easily. Take into account how much exactly the total cost is so you’re not left surprised when you see the financial dent it has made.
Undergarments For the bride who is dreaming of luxury lingerie for her big day, it can be easy to forget how much those hidden additions add to your attire’s overall price. Many brides will have to fork out for supportive and comfortable underwear for the big day as well as some more sexy and seducing choices for later on. All kinds of undergarments worn by you and your wedding party will add up so be sure to factor in the full ensemble’s cost rather than just the items you see at face value.
HIDDEN COSTS BEHIND EVERY Wedding By Ann Cronin
No matter what kind of wedding you and your beloved have opted for, every couple’s big day has some hidden expenses that are often forgotten. Here are some of the less obvious costs you should factor in to your wedding budget. The night before
Day-after additions
If traveling away from your local area for your wedding, you’ll have to avail of some kind of accommodation for the night before the wedding, and this cost is doubled if you and your partner are staying traditionally separated from one another until the ceremony. Transport costs to your location and back are also worth noting.
If your celebrations are going to roll into a two-day party there are many undercover costs to take into account. After booking the venue, food or entertainment, you also have to think about day-two outfits for you and your husband, drink costs and travel expenses. Taxi fares or another overnight stay in your venue can also add to your expenses.
Honeymoon costs When flights and accommodations are all done and dusted, it can be easy to forget that the cost of living and enjoying yourselves may pile up to an equal amount. Between food, drinks, activities, site-seeing and transport, your honeymoon expenses will have increased in cost significantly by the end of the trip so be sure to have enough put by to facilitate the entire getaway. If heading anywhere particularly exotic, visas and vaccinations may also add unanticipated dents to the honeymoon fund. 28
PRE-WEDDING Timeline
By Ann Cronin
Being organised in the weeks leading up to the big day helps to alleviate stress and make sure that you haven’t left anything out!
Six weeks to go Pick up your Marriage Registration Form if you haven’t already done so and double check that you’ve covered every other legal requirement. This is quite possibly the most important point to note – you can’t get married without the paperwork! If you or your partner dye your hair, book touch up appointments for the week before your wedding day. Book a manicure and pedicure for the day before the wedding.
Five weeks to go Start chasing any late RS s and give the final head count number to your venue or wedding planner. Once you have tracked down everyone who’s attending. Finalise your seating plan with your partner and go over the running order for speeches. Re-confirm everything with your suppliers or wedding planner and make decisions regarding any final details that need to be sorted. You don’t want to leave any last-minute planning to the final few weeks so try sort these now so you can ease the stress coming up to your big day.
Four weeks to go Pick up your wedding rings if you have not already done so and ensure they’re stored somewhere safe for the next few weeks. Meet with your celebrant to discuss final details such as hymns and readings and any other last-minute additions to the ceremony. Go on your hen and stag parties!
32
Three weeks to go Finalise your vows and encourage your partner to do so too. If you, your partner or wedding party are giving speeches, remind everyone to finalise their speeches and encourage everyone to read what they have written to someone else for feedback. Check with all of your groomsmen and bridal party to see if they’ve attended fittings and tailors, and remind them to pick up their outfits. Purchase gifts for your bridesmaids, maid of honour and anyone else you wish to gift such as members of your partner’s family.
Two w e e ks to g o Attend your final gown fitting and ensure you are happy with the final look, accessories and other details. Choose your something old, new, borrowed and blue! Relax and indulge in frequent pamper sessions, girl time, meditation sessions and even a spa treatment if required. Allow for frequent date-nights and time with your partner to ease any nerves.
One week to go Ensure you’ve appointed or asked people to pick up any items which need to be collected. Attend your hair and nail appointments. Ensure you’re eating properly and sleeping well so that you aren’t run down for the big day. njoy and embrace the final few days as it will all be over before you know it! 33

THE GROOM’S GUIDE TO WRITING
Your Own Vows
By Ann Cronin
Writing your own vows can be a di cult task. ever again will you have to publically voice such significant sentiments in front of so many of the people in your life, and it can be particularly hard if you’re not used to putting your affection for your bride-to-be into words. o not fear though, as we’ve put together some of our best tips and tricks for writing your own vows. Make your promises The ultimate purpose of your vows are to solidify your promises to one another. Think up what promises you wish to put on yourself regarding loving and caring for your partner for the rest of your lives together. Make them honest and realistic, as well as unique to your relationship if possible.
Practice, practice, practice
Do your research If you’re completely lost regarding how wedding vows are structured, the best way to learn is to read other couples vows. Whether you want to find some examples online or ask friends and family to read over their vows, it’s the best way of understanding how vows should be structured and received. Don’t plagiarize though – no matter how romantic and perfect that template you find online may be, your vows will succeed better if they come from you.
Make sure you’re on the same page While many couples do opt to keep their vows a surprise for one another, it is always best to have a quick chat with each other in terms of how the vows should be structured. For example, you should ensure your vows timing and length is somewhat equal to avoid any awkward differences or comparisons on the day. You should also ask your partner about the general vibe and feel of their vows to ensure that your sentiments carry the same tone. 46
It may sound silly, but practicing reading your vows aloud is the key to success. You need to know that what you’ve written reads well and master the pace and speed at which you speak. It’s always best to time your speech a few times to ensure it is of a suitable length, and reading it to others will help with both confidence and getting feedback on what you’ve prepared.

Think outside the Box Irish couples are well known for having a unique take on the world.
To capitalise on this take we have put together a list of things you can do to make your wedding stand out as one of a kind. CIRCULAR CEREMONY Have your loved ones seated around you while you get hitched, it makes for an intimate ceremony even if there is a large crowd and everyone will get a good view of the nuptials. You could also bring this style into your reception by getting rid of the top table and just having a circular table for you and your wedding party. With this table in the middle of the room, everybody will get to see you and it makes you much more approachable than you would be at a classic top table.
ALTERNATIVES TO CAKE Cake isn’t your cup of tea? No problem, there are tons of different confections to sink your teeth into on your wedding day. Try donuts or pastries instead to give your guests something unexpected. If you are getting married around the same time as some of your friends who will have a similar guest list, it might give your guests a much needed break from wedding cake. Talk to our confectionery suppliers for their advice on this and together you can come up with some wonderful ideas. Desert tables will also be the biggest thing to hit the sweet scene for 2017.
SCRATCH CARD WEDDING INVITES These are a super cute way of inviting people to your wedding. Create a scratch card so people can have fun unveiling the date of your big day; it’s a super fun and even DIY option if you are so inclined. Write something cheesy like ‘lucky in love’ on them and your guests will love it, everyone’s a winner. 50
PHOTO STAND INS Instead of the usual photo booth opt for a funny photo stand in to be set up in your drinks reception. A super fun idea sure to give your guests a great laugh.

CARING FOR YOUR WEDDING SHOES ON YOUR BIG DAY
By Ann Cronin
A bride’s wedding shoes are a treasured accessory which not only serve as a stylish addition to your bridal ensemble, but also serve as a treasured keepsake for years to come. It’s understandable that you will want to keep your wedding day footwear in the best condition, so here are our tips for caring for your footwear throughout the big day.
Helpful tools
Stored with care Before and after the big day, your heels should be stored in a safe and dry space with their own protective armour. Always keeps your wedding shoes in an appropriate box with tissue wrapping, and always handle them with care when they’re being transported. If switching to flats as the evening draws in and comfort or dancing become priority, ensure you have somewhere safe and careful to store them for the remainder of the day.
There are some items you can have on hand to care for your wedding shoes throughout the day. Wet wipes and cotton pads can be great for wiping off stains and marks throughout the day. While breaking the heels in prior your day, if you’re finding they’re a bit loose, look into buying suitable insoles or padding to keep them perfectly placed. If they’re small or cutting at your feet, bring along excess blister pads and plasters to protect your feet from cuts and your heels from resulting stains.
Weathering the storm The elements are probably your wedding shoes’ biggest threat. o matter what kind of weather forecast graces your big day, there are certain things to be mindful of. Avoid grass and muddy ground. Puddles and wet surfaces should be avoided if possible, and heels should be wiped clean immediately after if not. Look into the idea of wearing a different pair of heels for parts of your day that involve these natural conditions. Don’t leave light coloured fabric heels out in direct sunlight if you wish to avoid colour fading or changing. 56
After-care Have a chat with a drycleaner regarding how best to treat the fabrics of your shoes after the big day, and get advice on how to deal with particular stains. Look into having any loose embellishments fixed and missing detailing replaced. oogle can also be a helpful resource when searching for cleaning hacks and tips. If there’s any details or stains which can’t be rectified, don’t panic. It only adds to the fact that these shoes served you on such a special, exciting and jam-packed day.

“Eve, you are exemplary at your job, you answered every query in a timely, friendly manner and your attention to detail is amazing. You are a pleasure to deal with. You thought of things I’d never have remembered. You wove a magic day for us. Everything was prepared, calm and smooth ... we and our guests felt very taken care of. Grainne, you and your team handled the reservations beautifully, many of our guests mentioned how friendly and professional you are, you made everyone feel at home. Sinead, you were so good to everyone on the day ... even noticing one of our Flowergirls upset when she was forgotten ... she had her moment at the microphone thanks to you. Our wedding day was so special thanks to all the staff at Aherlow, despite the very heavy rain on the day, we and our guests had a wonderful day and that is because you all ensured a warm homely friendly welcome. Eve, thank you for setting a room aside for us, it was put to good use as we used it for many of our photographs and had a singing session in the early hours of the morning. The relaxed calm atmosphere really made us and all of our guests at ease, all the staff were amazing, friendly, professional and at pains to make everyone happy. The food was sumptuous and exactly how we wanted it and I can tell you everyone enjoyed their meals. Service was smooth and carefully planned. The function room was dressed beautifully, we were so proud to walk in, you arranged the tables perfectly, they were placed to ensure everyone had a view of the top table and other tables which meant no table was side-lined or obscured. Michael and I can honestly say we chose wisely ... Aherlow House Hotel is so unusual, nestled in beautiful panoramic views and has a wonderful relaxed homely glamour that so many other hotels lack and the staff are lovely. We unreservedly recommend Aherlow House Hotel especially Eve ... we found it hard to leave and will be back many times.Thank you” Sarah & Michael - November 2019
