SHE BUILT THIS™ - MEET EMILY ABORN Written for New Hampshire Women Magazine Entrepreneurship can be a solitary and challenging journey. Wake. Work hard. Sleep. Repeat. Some liken it to jumping off a cliff and sewing a parachute on the way down. Days can pass before you talk to or see another person. Doubt and uncertainty saddle up in your mind just to stir things up. Is there anyone who can relate? Does anyone else understand what I’m going through? In 2017, Emily Aborn sat

in the mattress store she owned with her husband in Amherst, NH feeling isolated and alone. She worked in the store during business hours, and her husband operated his painting business while also conducting deliveries and keeping the books for the store. After searching for a resource in small business that she could talk to, Emily contacted someone from the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) who gave her some of the best advice of her life. “She sat me

down and said you need to act like you are a brand new entrepreneur, get out there, and make connections,” said Aborn. Like a true entrepreneur, Emily’s mind swirled with possibilities of how to meet and engage with fellow women business owners. One day on a car ride, an idea popped into her head. “I want to talk to fellow women entrepreneurs and give them a place to share their stories of success to inspire others,” she said. “My friend and I organized an event at LaBelle Winery and one hundred and sixty people came! There was such a need in our area to connect and so many more women in this boat than we thought.” After this successful event, Aborn created a Facebook group to continue the conversation amongst these women entrepreneurs. “At the time, I called it, ‘Chicks’ Who Mean Business,” she said. “Then, I went on to streamline everything from my events to the podcast I’d started, to other dreams and visions I had for its growth and the group became She Built This. Women entrepreneurs needed a community to share what we were going through, network, and connect in meaningful ways.” This member-based community of women started in 2018, but officially became a business in 2019. She Built This hosted yearly events at

Labelle Winery averaging around one hundred and sixty guests in attendance. When 2020 came, Aborn had plans to do three events in a year, across New Hampshire, when the Covid-19 pandemic hit. She quickly shifted her strategy, which meant a switch from in-person events to online events. “I was nervous about doing online events,” she said. Yet, Aborn seemed to intuitively understand online events that were different and exciting had the potential to drive attendance. It is here where her creativity and drive shined in the wake of adversity. “I decided if we’re going to do it, we’re going to do it right,” she said. “We decided to do a PJ party. It was extremely fun and successful. I even sent all the participants a special gift so they could keep the magic alive, long after the event was over.” Aborn said She Built This’ mission is to let women know following [their] dreams is normal. “She Built This is a community for women in business,” she said. “It’s a community coming together to help with resources, cheerleading, support, and referrals [through events, networking, and a Facebook page with over sixteen hundred people]. There are no global restrictions. Right now, many participants happen to be from New England, but some are located as far as Australia - it’s all over.” Members range from service providers to product-based businesses. Many have been in business for years, while others are just starting out. Aborn explained Continued on Page 8

some members don’t even have a business of their own but want to be a resource for women who do. “Tangibly, we provide workshops, networking, and offer lots of visibility opportunities,” she said. The shift from in-person events to online events was a significant change, but Aborn said it provides an opportunity for She Built This to expand and give access to more participants because of the ability for people to join virtually. Aborn said she’ll continue with a blend of virtual and live events going forward. “It has all been a blessing because people have been able to show up consistently and meet more often,” she said. “I’m looking forward to trying for outdoor events in the spring of 2022. We likely won’t go back to only live events.” Another way Aborn is able to reach out and connect with women in business is through her She Built This podcast. “It’s probably my favorite part of

my business,” she said. “It started as a passion project because I’ve always wanted to have one. I wanted it to be about women entrepreneurs and highlighting people’s stories. New Year’s Resolutions We Can Keep

Making New Year’s resolutions can feel like a daunting task especially when we set our expectations on tough goals. Here are five resolutions we may actually enjoy and build upon as we continue throughout the months of 2022. 1. Two minutes of mindful breathing a day: Mindful breathing means our attention and focus is simply on our breath. Start by finding a quiet spot in your home where you can sit comfort-

ably. You can close your eyes or keep them open. Begin with a deep breath in and out. Then, breath normally, but let your belly expand instead of raising your shoulders. Focus your attention on your breathing and your body. Feel yourself sitting and notice how your body feels as a whole. When thoughts come in (and they always do), gently bring your awareness back to breathing. Try this for two minutes a day and gradually increase. Check out some meditation phone apps that can bring you into guided medita-

tion when you feel up to it. 2. Set a daily intention before you get out of bed: According to 7th Generation Spiritual Teacher, Chandresh Bhardway, “Setting an intention is like drawing a map of where you wish to go—it becomes the driving force behind your goals and visions. Without an intention, there is no map, and you’re just driving down a road with no destination in mind.” * So, what are daily intentions? They can be as simple as intending to start the morning with a healthy breakfast or taking a walk! As you get into the practice of setting a daily intention, start to increase the effort involved in these daily practices. For example, “I intend to practice self love today.” Or, “I intend to not take things so personally.” There are lots of resources online to learn more about how daily intentions can help you in work and personal life. Do a Google search for “How to Set Daily Intentions,” and see what you find. 3. Replacing one sugary drink a day: A single soda can have over 30 grams of sugar in one can! According to the American Heart Association, daily sugar intake guidelines are 36 grams a day for men and 25 grams of sugar a day for women. One soda a day can eat up a whole daily intake. With so many alternatives to soda, sports drinks, and fruit drinks - it’s easier

than you think to start with removing one sugary drink from your daily diet. Flavored seltzer water is a great alternative to a soda. Be sure there’s no hidden sugar though. How about loading a tall glass of water with sliced strawberries and lime wedges? 4. Replacing a nighttime snack: Buttered popcorn during our nightly binge watching, a walk by the pantry to refill on the nacho chips while chatting on a video call, a second look in the fridge for something sweet after dinner - yep, we’ve all been there. Nighttime snacking can lead to unwanted weight gain. Most of this nighttime snacking is done mindlessly and often when we are not even hungry. Research shows eating more protein and fiber during the day can help curb cravings at night. Try to incorporate more healthy proteins into your diet during the day (i.e., oatmeal with almond milk or low-fat milk, nuts and fruits) and when reaching for snacks at night, ask yourself are you really hungry or just bored? Opt for a seltzer water with lots of flavor. You may be thirsty instead of hungry! One study showed that sometimes people mistake hunger for thirst. Another idea is to schedule your snack night! Popcorn on Fridays with Netflix? 5. Increase physical fitness by setting this goal: Sometimes even the thought of starting an exercise plan can seem so overwhelming, we don’t even try. Starting slow and building Continued on Page 13

on your personal successes may increase the likelihood of sticking with an activity plan. If you’re just starting out and the pandemic has really slowed your activity down, start slow! Just like your daily intentions, intend to make mindful changes that fit your lifestyle. For example, if you’re working from home, walk around your house during your conference calls (unless you’re required to be at your desk!). Also, take a few stretch breaks during the day. Turn on some music and take a dance break. You’ll be surprised how great you feel after. Consider a work desk that allows you to stand more instead of sitting all day. Did you know that just standing alone burns more calories than sitting? As you increase your basic physical activity, try to increase it into walks outdoors during your lunch break (or, just walk around inside). And, lastly, increase that housework. You can burn calories just by increasing the amount of house cleaning you do a day. *Chandresh Bhardway,”10 Intentions to Set For Your Most Authentic Life,” Mindbodygreen.com

MEDICAL SPA | SPECIAL SECTION

UNDERSTANDING NON-INVASIVE TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR TIRED LOOKING EYES Dr. Lisa Vuich is a graduate of Tufts University (1988) and Tufts University School of Medicine (1992). She opened Renew MediSpa in 2006 and has worked steadily since then to ensure that Renew MediSpa remains at the cutting edge of the latest advancements in nonsurgical aesthetics. She is a nationally recognized injector, a member of numerous aesthetic organizations, a Key Opinion Leader for several aesthetic companies, and a Master Clinical instructor for Specialty Med Training. She is board certified by the American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine and regularly instructs physicians and other providers on injection technique, platelet-rich plasma therapies and other aesthetic procedures through the Renew MediSpa Training Institute.

In the field of non-surgical aesthetics, one of the most common concerns presented by patients is the agerelated changes they see happening in the region around the eyes. This is a complex area, with many factors at play, and often more than a single treatment option needed in order to get someone the smooth and refreshed appearance they desire. While an individualized consultation is the best way to assess your particular situation, we can review the options broadly here. Botulinum Toxin: “Botox” injections are certainly straightforward and popular. This injectable medication temporarily relaxes the muscles around the eyes that would otherwise contract to make wrinkles appear deeper with certain facial expressions such as smiling and squinting. “Botox” does not fill a line, nor can it address concerns such as under eye “bags” or dark circles. Ultimately the toxin wears off in about 3 months and thus needs to be repeated this frequently to maintain whatever results have been achieved.

Dermal Filler: An injectable filler composed primarily of hyaluronic acid can be placed in the delicate under eye area to partially fill a depression we call the “tear trough.” In the right patient, this can result in less under eye “shadowing” and thus a more refreshed appearance. If there has been loss of volume in the cheeks as well, that usually needs to be addressed simultaneously with additional syringes of dermal filler at additional cost. Anti-aging creams and serums: Regardless of quality or cost, topicals do little to restore this region beyond some limited skin lightening and fine line smoothing. They are more effective at promoting hydration and protecting existing collagen, thus they are rarely sufficient by themselves to adequately treat an active concern. “Miracle Creams”: Some topical agents are heavily marketed to reduce under eye “bags” within minutes. These products often contain a compound called sodium silicate, which contracts/ shrinks as it dries. Although this can produce a temporary tightening effect, it will be lost as soon as the product is washed off or wears off (within a handful of hours). There may be a chalky residue present once the product dries, and you may not be able to apply your makeup over it. Furthermore,

14 / VOL 4 ISSUE 1 / NEW HAMPSHIRE WOMEN MAGAZINE

any water including tears, rain, humidity and sweating will completely wash the product and thus any effect away. Medical Micro needling: This noninvasive procedure with minimal to no downtime, usually performed by an RN, stimulates new collagen formation and can thus improve fine lines if performed in a series. It cannot however address under eye “bags,”nor can it tighten or lift the skin of the lids or the brows. Laser Resurfacing: Certain lasers, such as our SmartSkin CO2 laser, can similarly be used to smooth, lighten and tighten skin but again will not be able to address under eye “bags.” Plasma Pen: Heat formed at the skin surface by these pens results in a superficial burn. As an injury, a burn triggers a healing response but is in my opinion a very high-risk procedure in terms of potential complications such as scarring. Furthermore, the majority of patients who write reviews of their results seem to be mostly horrified by the downtime and dissatisfied with any results that are achieved. Plasma Pens cannot address under eye fat pad issues. AGNES RF: Now Available at Renew MediSpa: Radiofrequency energy has a very long history of success in the field of nonsurgical aesthetics. The energy is used to deliver heat to specific layers of the skin and subcutaneous tissue, to generate new collagen formation (for smoothing and tightening) or even to selectively destroy problematic

skin structures such as excess fat. The beauty of AGNES RF for the periorbital region is the customizability of the treatment and the wide range of concerns which it can address simultaneously. Heat is delivered precisely to a region at the tips of 1 to 3 micro needles, which are chosen based on the particular concerns of the patient. With a customized treatment plan, a single AGNES RF session can address: • Fine lines of the entire periorbital and brow region • Loose skin: It can be used to lift the brow as well as tighten and smooth the entirety of the skin around the eye region including under or above the brow, the sides aka “crow’s feet” and even the delicate skin below the lower eyelid, over the course of 1 to 3 treatment sessions • Under eye “bags”: These protruding fat pads can be permanently reduced in size as the carefully selected micro needle delivers the energy at a depth where it is able to melt the unwanted fat cells. An additional pass with another micro needle will tighten the surrounding skin to further enhance the results. AGNES RF was developed by a renowned dermatologist in Korea, based on years of clinical research, and was FDA approved in 2017. In the next issue I will discuss the applications of AGNES RF for other aesthetic concerns.
