Our products are unique not only because they are thoughtfully designed and handmade by artisans in small production batches crafted in rich Indian art forms, but also because they are made sustainably. We strive to empower all business partners from producer to consumer and to minimize our environmental footprint. We use Fair Trade practices in our work - meaning we support marginalized producers, pay fair wages and ensure safe workplaces free from child labor - and strive for environmental stewardship in the materials and processes used. In this catalog, we have put special emphasis on highlighting products made using recycled/upcycled materials and crafted primarily by women producers. Indian culture is traditionally very patriarchal, and women have few opportunities to work. There is also a large amount of waste degrading the environment. Our India team, SETU (meaning “bridge” in Hindi), develops and maintains artisan producer relationships and handles packaging, exporting and artisan development. This approach gives us the advantage of reduced product development and production lead times and costs and allows Handmade Expressions to understand the social, economic, and environmental challenges artisans face and provide support to our partners as needed.

By supporting traditional, handmade methods of production, artisans use fewer resources and fossil fuels to craft all products you find in this catalog, most of which are also composed of natural or recycled materials.

Appliqué is an old and traditional art form where a pattern is cut by hammer and chisel on a sheet of fabric. Recycled Denim Tote

This new line of upcycled plastic tote bags is crafted from post-consumer plastic shopping bags that would otherwise go to landfill. Skilled artisans in the Kutch region of India developed this concept to create threads out of plastic that can be woven to create new functional products. Women were then trained in traditional handloom weaving techniques to craft the bags you see here. This project allows for sustainable employment opportunities and growth for artisans.

Upcycled Plastic Tote Bags These plastic bags are a perfect example of blending traditional artforms with modern day usage. Although hand weaving techniques are very common in India, weaving recycled plastic bags instead of yarn is a new approach and one that supports sustainable efforts. Because these lightweight bags are durable and spacious, they are great for everyday use, heading to the beach or carrying around books and electronic devices. Our new line of Mandala fashion accessories come from the Kutch region of India, which is known for its rich and intricate embroidery. Embroidery is a very old craft, as women traditionally created products for their dowry. After this region was devastated by an earthquake in 2001, women began marketing these pieces for sale. Because their products were so traditional in style and so expensive, HME’s designers worked closely with artisans for over a year to develop a collection of richly embroidered products that would have appeal and sell in U.S. markets. We are excited to introduce this range to you!

Empowering artisans to be self-sufficient is a crucial step for socioeconomic development. HME believes that the trading relationship is more than just buying and selling. We have two full-time product designers who work closely with artisan groups to utilize and incorporate traditional art forms into modern products that will be successful in U.S. markets. Preservation

Preserving the environment is integrated in our strategy of logistics and product development. While most of our products are shipped by sea, some production is sent by plane because of inventory or time constraints. Shipping by air, however, releases 30x more CO2 than shipping by sea. We also have strategies for reducing our waste sent to landfill. Many products in this catalog incorporate repurposed materials and most are either biodegradable or recyclable.

Handmade Expressionsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; U.S. team is a big proponent of recycling - most of the orders shipped to you are packaged with recycled papers and materials and we have set an aggressive goal of reducing our air shipment volume by 20% this year.

Handmade paper is a very old and traditional process in India. All of our paper products are eco-friendly and tree-free, made from recycled cotton scraps from the textile industry. After cotton pieces are sorted, they are shredded and made into a pulp then pressed into large paper sheets. The sheets are hung to dry and flattened. There is a very unique feel to the paper and sheets are soft and sturdy. The paper-making groups we work with are located in Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan, and they provide fair wages and good working conditions for the artisans.

support. This is why HME contributes 1% of our revenues solely to community development projects each year. Such projects are identified by artisan communities as areas of need, and decided upon by HMEâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s India team. They range from health camps with medicine and eyeglass provision to nutrition education, computer support, and womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s empowerment workshops. Such projects allow communities we work with to thrive and artisans to have a better quality of life.

Our line of rugs and striped napkins are hand-woven by artisans on traditional looms in the outskirts of New Delhi. These skilled artisans use three different types of looms to craft a variety of patterns and textiles. With the rapid expansion of Delhi and urbanization of sur rounding areas, many people are moving from villages to cities in search of work. The jobs they find, however, are often insecure and exploitative. Traditional craftwork, such as handloom weaving, helps to keep artisans in secure jobs and strengthen rural communities.

Minimum Order We have a $100 minimum order. There are also minimum quantities by item. In an effort to reduce plastic packaging, all products must be ordered in multiples of the minimum quantity. Payment Information We accept all major credit cards and checks. Checks should be made payable to Handmade Expressions. Please contact us if you would like any other payment arrangements. Lead Times Generally orders will be shipped out within 3-5 business days. If you have an urgent deadline, please make note of it when you place your order. You may also place orders in advance with staggered or future ship dates to suit your business needs. Shipping Information All orders are shipped out from our warehouse in Austin, TX. Shipping charges are based on weight, size, and destination of the order. We ship UPS Ground for all domestic orders and use FedEx or USPS for international shipments.
