Our India team, SETU (meaning “bridge” in Hindi), develops and maintains artisan producer relationships and handles packaging, exporting and artisan development. Handmade Expressions’ Austin team manages design, sales, and marketing. This approach gives us the advantage of reduced product development and production lead times and costs and allows Handmade Expressions to understand the social, economic, and environmental challenges artisans face and provide support to our partners as needed.

The Jogi Collection

The ever popular Jogi fabric is made in the desert villages of Rajasthan, India. The vivid color combinations are a reflection of the culture in this area. Locals paint the dull desert with their use of colorful garments and accessories. Handmade Expressionsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; team of designers understand the beauty and versatility of this fabric and have developed some exciting new additions. Our Colorsplash Collection is an ongoing favorite for Handmade Expressions. Made in the desert region of Rajasthan, where the climate limits agricultural opportunities, men and women work together to create these intricate products for their source of income. Pieces of upcycled, post-consumer fabric are collected from the textile industry, cleaned, sorted by color and patched together to create this exquisite and authentic look.

Handmade Expressions Spring 2013

This line of upcycled plastic tote bags is crafted from post-consumer plastic shopping bags that would otherwise go to landfill. Skilled artisans in the Kutch region of India developed this concept to create threads out of plastic that can be woven to create new functional products. Women were then trained in traditional hand loom weaving techniques to craft the bags you see here. This project allows for sustainable employment opportunities and growth for artisans.

Upcycled Plastic Tote Bags These plastic bags are a perfect example of blending traditional art forms with modern day usage. Although hand weaving techniques are very common in India, weaving recycled plastic bags instead of yarn is a new, sustainable approach and one that supports sustainable efforts. Because these lightweight bags are durable and spacious, they are great for everyday use, heading to the beach or carrying around books and electronic devices. In celebration of World Fair Trade Day 2012, Handmade Expressions helped a week long Fair Trade Tour that begin in Austin,TX, went up the coast of California and ended at FTF’s annual conference in Seattle, WA. The guest speaker was Lata Kachhawaha (also known as Lata ji). Lata ji is a passionate and inspiring woman from Rajasthan, India who has devoted her life to improving the conditions of rural artisans, particularly women. She helped to found the Society to Uplift Rural Economy (SURE), an NGO based in the dry desert region of Barmer that created the cutwork bags you see here. Lata ji shared her personal story and described in detail SURE’s programs that together promote a holistic strategy for rural development. Having worked in this field for over 25 years, her knowledge and the experiences she shared were incredibly inspiring! “We do this work so there is hope for the next generation,” Lata ji said. Her goal is to see all girls being educated and for traditional craft work to continue in a way that provides a decent livelihood for women and their families.“Change is a slow process,” Lata ji explained. But, Lata ji’s progress proves change is possible.There was deep pride in her voice as she discussed the changes she has seen in communities over the course of her work, particularly when with women’s confidence. This tour fostered a connection between the two ends of the fair trade system – an artisan lead with advocates and retailers and consumers in the USA an importer and wholesaler of artisanal products, Handmade Expressions is in a unique position to reach out in both directions.We were able to strengthen relationships with our retail partners by supporting their outreach initiatives through events. Everyone was appreciative of the unique opportunity and said it helped motivate them in their work for fair trade.

In early 2012, Handmade Expressions’ India team, SETU, began a sustainable development project to conserve water with the blockprinting community who makes our best-selling Eco Shoppers. In August, 2012, a water treatment plant was installed at the artisans’ workshop in Barmer, in western Rajasthan, to be used for production of block-printed fabric.This will save a minimum of 5 million liters of water per year! Water is a scarce and precious resource in the dry, desert region of Barmer. Traditionally, hand block-printing requires an immense volume of water to dye and print the fabric.This one group alone consumes 25,000-50,000 liters of water each day, which must be trucked in from surrounding regions. There also has been no way to clean or reuse this water, so waste water with effluents was traditionally drained into the land. After identifying this issue, SETU researched possible solutions and decided to develop a custom machine. Working with a lab, they devised a water filtration system comprised of a quartz/sand pressure filter and an activated carbon filter. Tests effectively proved the water output is clean and suitable for reuse in block-print production.This plant has capacity to filter 2,000 liters of water each hour and each lot of water can be filtered and reused 15 times. The plant was installed and, after a two-week trial period, formally inaugurated on August 28, 2012.Water filtration is a huge economic relief for artisans, as they expect large monetary savings from purchasing less water and are no longer at risk of shutting down due to water scarcity. It also will help keep their community healthy by eliminating effluents that were drained into the surrounding land.This project has proven to be a successful, breakthrough environmental initiative by Handmade Expressions and SETU and has inspired us to identify other artisan communities who can benefit from water treatment.

This line of upcycled tape bags are crafted by an NGO in New Delhi that trains people with special needs in craftwork as a method for socio-economic empowerment. Handmade Expressions worked closely with this group to create thse bags made from upcycled casette tapes and cotton. These bags are sustainable, innovative and a great fashion accessory.

Quilted Clucth

Our new quilted clutches are crafted by women associated with an NGO located in Gujarat, a rural region in Western India. Climate allows for seasonal agricultural opportunities. Due to this region’s depleting resources, family members generally migrate elsewhere to find work opportunities. Craftwork, such as quilting, has allowed women to stay in community and earn higher, more stable income while also managing agriculture and other housework. With increased income, women have gained social status within their families and community. Training, product development and capacity building are just a few ways this NGO is working towards the economic and social changes of women in this area.

In 2012, SETU implemented vocational training programs for women artisans across a few urban slum areas in order to help them earn income and improve their living conditions by acquiring new craft skills. Through these programs, the women learned to craft modern jewelry styles using repurposed scraps of fabric and saris that otherwise would have been sent to landfill. The design team at Handmade Expressions worked together with these artisans in developing innovative design concepts, combining their newly learned skills with market trend research. We are proud to introduce our new collection of upcycled jewelry â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a true example of innovation, partnership and empowerment.

In June 2012, SETU, our business partners in India, went to visit the artisan group responsible for making the majority of our jewelry. The report back was extremely motivating and supportive of the positive impacts made by sustainable development. What began as a small artisan group working from a tiny, congested workshop in Old Delhi is now a large community who has been able to improve the quality of life for their families as well as support sustainable production efforts. Economic success provided the group with the opportunity to move into a new, larger workshop with more environmentally-friendly processes. The group also took initiative in creating better ventilated spaces and containers to properly dispose of chemicals. They now source materials that are mostly recyclable and address artisan and health concerns by using entirely lead-free,cadmium-free,and nickel-free materials. Their wages are now 12 times greater than prior to working with fair trade partners. In addition, we have seen vast social progress over the years of our partnership. This artisan community has strongly supported the education of their members and their families. Women now take night classes and all children are going to school.The founder’s daughter, this year, is going to be the first female of the artisan community to attend college and the group is extremely proud! This impact report was encouraging to our team at Handmade Expressions - knowing our relationships are creating social and environmental empowerment. This group has proven to be a true success story with a love for their entire community.

Handmade paper is a very old and traditional process in India. All of our paper products are eco-friendly and tree-free, made from recycled cotton scraps from the textile industry. After cotton pieces are sorted, they are shredded and made into a pulp then pressed into large paper sheets. The sheets are hung to dry and flattened. There is a very unique feel to the paper and sheets are soft and sturdy. The paper-making groups we work with are located in Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan, and they provide fair wages and good working conditions for the artisans.

In June 2012, SETU members went to visit the various communities in Northern India where our partner wood artisans reside. Roughly 15000 skilled carvers are associated with a large NGO who is dedicated to social development for artisans and their families. Over the last few years of our partnership, we have witnessed significant developments in education and overall livelihood among this community. Children are attending schools and colleges, training to become advocates, engineers and professors. The community was excited to share that the son of an artisan is now a Judge! Through sales of wooden crafts as well as the help of various government grants, numerous development activities have been achieved. The NGO has provided most artisans with health insurance cards. There is an onsite doctor in the village office available to provide consultations and free prescriptions to for medications. Last year, a library was built and proposals to establish a school and hospital in the next year are underway. There also were fifteen solar powered street lamps installed on otherwise dark village roads. Handmade Expressions has supported their initiatives by providing 50% of the communityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s orders over the last few years. Our India team SETU has also sponsored particular skills development and training programs for the artisan community. The success and ongoing growth of this NGO is not only apparent in their livelihood, increased income and support from the government but it also lingers in the air. An uplifting energy in the community confirms the positive impact of our partnerships and proves our work is indeed heading in the right direction.

These skilled artisans use three different types of looms to craft a variety of patterns and textiles. With the rapid expansion of Delhi and urbanization of surrounding areas, many people are moving from villages to cities in search of work. The jobs they find, however, are often insecure and exploitative. Traditional craft work, such as hand loom weaving, helps to keep artisans in secure jobs and strengthen rural communities.

IN late July 2012,

members of SETU visited the

skilled artisans who create our hand block printed tablecloth line. During the visit, SETU members and artisans addressed quality improvements. Through their discussions, new standards were developed that would refine final production. Some of these changes include reproduction of old blocks and maintaining consistent drying times to prevent shade variation. Artisans were open to learning about international quality standards and SETU gained an understanding of the unique intrinsic variations of hand block printing.

WHOLESALE ORDERING INFORMATION You may order online or place your order by phone, fax or email. Minimum Order We have a $100 minimum order. There are also minimum quantities by item. In an effort to reduce plastic packaging, all products must be ordered in multiples of the minimum quantity. Payment Information We accept all major credit cards and checks. Checks should be made payable to Handmade Expressions. Please contact us if you would like any other payment arrangements. Lead Times Generally orders will be shipped out within 3-5 business days. If you have an urgent deadline, please make note of it when you place your order. You may also place orders in advance with staggered or future ship dates to suit your business needs. Shipping Information All orders are shipped out from our warehouse in Austin, TX. Shipping charges are based on weight, size, and destination of the order. We ship UPS Ground for all domestic orders and use FedEx or USPS for international shipments. We may use another shipping option upon request, and use your shipping account if you specify on your order. Backorder Policy Handmade Expressions will ship all available items for your requested ship date and automatically put any unavailable products on back order.
