As I look back on 2010, and forward to 2011, I am filled with optimism. Every day, more and more people are becoming conscious about sustainability. TV commercials are presenting the low carbon footprint of products and local cafes serve 100% fair trade coffee. Sustainable choices are no longer an afterthought for businesses and consumers — sustainability has become a way of life. After learning the hard way that respecting your customers and the environment takes more than fancy packaging, traditional businesses are going back to the drawing board. This is no surprise to us; we have long known that “doing good is good business.” This is certainly the case at Handmade Expressions. From its inception, our mission of promoting fair trade and sustainability has guided all our business decisions and helped us to grow fair trade in this challenging economy and rapidly changing consumer culture. An example of this is evident in our new School Paper line of products. These uniquely designed journals and gift bags are made with notebook paper discarded by schoolchildren in India. Rather than see this paper go to waste, we have been able to repurpose it for a new productive use. Now our artisans have a new product to offer the market, and consumers are instantly able to connect with the related sustainability story. And Handmade Expressions is honored to play the role of the storyteller. This is what experience has taught us: always seek new ways of doing business and new ways of being sustainable. It sums up our vision and purpose, and we would not have it any other way. I invite you to explore this presentation of our new product offerings for the Spring/Summer 2011 seasons. This reduces the middlemen, reduces lead times and costs, and allows us to transcend cultural barriers. Our India team runs logistics, maintains artisan relationships, and handles exporting, while our Austin team manages design, sales, and marketing.

Kasuthi Women Empowerment Group A volunteer-based organization located in the arid district of North Karnataka in South India. West Bengal Artisans The artisans who make our Jute Expressions bags are located in the West Bengal region of India. They belong to a nonprofit organization that works to better the standing of women, children, marginalized castes, the mentally and physically handicapped and the disadvantaged. Specializing in jute products, this group works with over 500 artisans living under the poverty line, most of whom are women. These artisans get the jute from jute mills, which exist specifically to serve artisans who make jute products.

Vishwakarma The artisans behind the creation of our Color Splash bags are creative and innovative people that inhabit the harsh, desert region of northwestern India. This desolate area is unfit for farming, and therefore is a land of little opportunity. As an alternative, many artisans decided to create a cooperative that has benefited from Fair Trade principles. These artisans create beautiful products, such as bags and cushion covers, by stitching together scraps from the textile industry. These scraps can have printed designs on them, embroidery, mirror work or other kinds of details, making them look very beautiful and intricate.

Often overlooked by the end consumer, things found in the every day life of an artisan have a strong influence on the art they produce. Here, and in other parts of this catalog, we take time to introduce you to a few of them.
Aspects of Artisan Life Cotton India is the second largest producer of cotton in the world. Essential not only to India’s present-day economy, cotton also played a significant role in the country’s history, when Gandhi encouraged Indians to weave their own cotton in a peaceful protest for independence. Post independence, textile production became the largest industry in India and created an economic platform through its strong exports. In many ways, cotton also weaves the cultural threads of India. It is a medium utilized by artisans across the country to express their art. Worn by Indians of all social levels, cotton is decorated using various art forms — ranging from block printing to embroidery to appliqué. The story of India’s cotton production proves craftsmanship and tradition are both powerful tools for revolutionary change.

WHOLESALE ORDERING INFORMATION You may order online or place your order by phone, fax or email. Minimum Order: We have a $100 minimum order. There are also minimum quantities by item. In an effort to reduce plastic packaging, all products must be ordered in multiples of the minimum quantity. Payment Information: We accept all major credit cards and checks. Checks should be made payable to Handmade Expressions. Please contact us if you would like any other payment arrangements. Lead Times: Generally orders will be shipped out within 3 business days. If you have an urgent deadline, please make note of it when you place your order. You may also place orders in advance with staggered or future ship dates to suit your business needs. Shipping Information: All orders are shipped out from our warehouse in Austin, TX. Shipping charges are based on weight, size, and destination of the order. We ship UPS Ground for all domestic orders and use FedEx or USPS for international shipments. We may use another shipping option upon request, and use your shipping account if you specify on your order. Backorder Policy: We stock all of our products in our Austin, TX warehouse. If we are temporarily out of stock on any item, it will automatically be scheduled to ship when the item becomes available – usually within 4-6 weeks – unless you request otherwise. Shipping charges will not exceed 10% of the value of your backorder. Please state on your order if you have a specific backorder policy or if you do not accept any backorders. Return Policy: We want you to be completely satisfied with our products. However, if you are dissatisfied with our product for any reason, you may make a return within 15 days of receipt of item(s). Products must be returned in their original condition with product tags and without retail price stickers. For returns related to damaged or defective items, please contact us within 15 days of receipt of the item(s). We will work with you in order to provide a replacement or refund/credit for the product. Customer Loyalty Program: To show our appreciation of your continued business, we provide customers who reach $2,500 in collective orders during the calendar year with FREE SHIPPING for the rest of the year! Note: custom orders are exempt from the loyalty program at this time. Territory Protection: We value our retail partners and understand that offering unique products is a key element to your success. Handmade Expressions offers “protection” for retail partners that carry a strong representation of our products in their store – meaning, we reserve the right to decline selling our products to stores within close proximity to an existing retail partner. Please let us know when you order if you have any specific concerns of conflicting retailers in your area. Area Representatives: We do work with sales reps in certain territories across the US.
