YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS COLLECTIVE.
JULY 8TH - 14TH | THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE
We would like to express our gratitude to the Faculty of Business & Economics at the University of Melbourne for their continued support, without which the ASES Summit would not have been possible.
WELCOME Congratulations again on your place at ASES Summit Melbourne! Get ready for an exciting week of speakers, tours, and socialising that will be sure to leave a lasting impact on your entrepreneurial journeys. We encourage you to be open to everything this week, and aim to make the most of every experience. Do your research on who we meet, where we go, and what we do, ask heaps of questions, but at the end of the day, have lots of fun. The Young Entrepreneurs Collective team will be alongside you all week to make sure everything goes to plan so don’t hesitate to reach out to us for anything, no matter how big or small.
THEME & PITCH This guide will detail the overarching theme of ASES Summit Melbourne - Thinking Globally and how the Pitch Competition will run for the upcoming week.
THEME
T H I N K I N G GLOBALLY Welcome to Melbourne. We’re a young city located all the way on the other side of the world. Yet in spite of our geographical isolation, we’ve transformed into a truly global, multicultural city (30% of our population was born overseas) with a thriving startup community. Melbourne is the home-base of leading companies such as seek. com and 99designs and has now emerged as Australia’s creative and tech hub. Amongst the many reasons for this success, is our ability to think globally. The theme of ASES Summit Melbourne is “Thinking Globally”. We’ve chosen this theme as we believe it perfectly reflects the mindset of today’s successful entrepreneur. In a city of just 4.5 million, and a country of 25 million, market sizes here are tiny compared to those in areas such as India or China. This means that companies, and founders need to start thinking global from day one, if they are to have any chance at growing their startups. There are amazing advantages to knowing how to think globally and what better time to start, then now. ASES Summit Melbourne 2018 is bringing together some of the brightest young entrepreneurs from around the world and putting them in the same room as Australia’s best thinkers, innovators and startup founders. After a week of speakers, startup tours and practical experience honing their craft, we’re hoping you will become truly global entrepreneurs.
ASES SUMMIT
PITCH COMPETITION Through your applications and interviews, we’ve asked you to prepare a business idea for the Summit. On day one, every person will be pitching their individual ideas to the group, and from there you’ll form teams based on your favourite ideas. Throughout the week, as our speakers flow in and out, we want to see you utilising your learnings from the speakers and apply them to your business ideas. At the end of the week, there will be a pitch competition, to see not only who has the best pitch, but who has applied the week’s learnings the best, and who has created a truly global startup. Keep this in mind as we progress through the week. Lets get started!
SCHEDULE This schedule will be your guide for the week. It has a detailed run-down of all events, weather forecast, and dress code for each day. Make sure you read it thoroughly and please be punctual to all events.

During this time, Jodie’s two-sided marketplace, Occasional Butler, was acquired by rival Airtasker. Kishan Thurairasa Entrepreneur in Residence The Generator Monash
During the final year of his chemical engineering degree Kish created a website allowing students to select their favourite subjects at university and receive a Google-like ranking of the most appropriate employers to work for. Although the site saw initial success with thousands of students signing up, Kish soon realised that the website was not solving a huge problem for employers, the ones ultimately paying for the service. In 2014 he pivoted Jobbop to help employers hire software developers and their platform eventually brought the industry average time to hire down from 83 days to less than 14. Looking to scale their service Jobbop was accepted into the Melbourne Accelerator Program and were later approached by Hired as the USbased company was looking to further expand internationally. Jobbop was eventually acquired by Hired in December 2015. Kish now works as the Entrepreneur in Residence at The Generator, Monash University’s entrepreneurship hub.

It is a patent-pending ergonomic footrest that offers both health and productivity benefits for those with sedentary lifestyle. In addition, during his sophomore year in Korea, he co-founded an awardwinning media startup, Haple. The company offered a platform which allowed customers to purchase celebrities’ available timeslots at a competitive rate. He was a management consultant and corporate entrepreneur at KPMG Australia. Taking his childhood dream job seriously, Sungwon served as a fire fighter as a Sergeant. He enjoys writing and recently published a best-selling book in Korea.
Maxine Lee Accelerator Manager Melbourne Accelerator Program (MAP)
The Melbourne Accelerator Program (MAP) is The University of Melbourne’s premier accelerator program. With years of experience guiding founders through the highs and lows of the startup journey, Maxine offers advice and insight into what it takes to create and build a company – from ideation and business planning through to a thriving organisation. An accomplished speaker often featured on entrepreneurship panels across Melbourne, Maxine has presented at Melbourne Knowledge Week, the Startup Victoria Female Founders Meetup and other industry panels. Shannon Orbons Head of Online Shopping Australia Post

He then joined Telstra’s Digital Commerce team, where he was responsible for the development of digital enablement solutions for small and medium businesses, and learnt just how hard it is to innovate within a large enterprise. During this time, Shannon co-founded a 50:50 JV between Australia’s Telstra and NAB Proquo, a small business marketplace that accepts services in-kind as a payment method, which processed over $6m of transactions in it’s first year. Shannon is currently the Head of Online Shopping at Australia Post, where he leads a team of entrepreneurs, service designers, hackers and strategy professionals that are responsible for the ideation and incubation of new solutions that make online shopping more desirable, feasible and viable for Australian consumers. From initial hypothesis, customer research and prototype development, to MVP launch and product / business incubation, Shannon manages a portfolio of initiatives at varying stages of maturity across the E2E innovation process to develop new solutions in the market.
