Serving as a client’s single point of responsibility, adi Group offers full support across the spectrum – from the smallest expert installation or maintenance contract to large-scale capital projects, in other words an endto-end, full lifecycle support. With its new Life Sciences division, a specialist multi-disciplinary design and engineering business, the Group is branching out into new exciting territories of the Pharma, Healthcare and Life Science technological sectors, set to provide a bespoke service for its new clients at every step of the way. “We offer full project management services from feasibility and concept, through detail and technical design, to construction, commissioning, and validation, using cutting-edge digital technology,” Darren Lewis summarises the division’s core business. Providing a more general background to the new business, he explained that adi was established in 1990 by Alan Lusty, CEO, who wished to create a self-delivered ‘one-stop-shop’ for engineering services to the manufacturing sector. Over the years, he developed the business, based on a divisional approach to project delivery. Today, adi Group has more than 23 specialist divisions and nearly 750 employees, self-delivering most of the key engineering requirements of the manufacturing and build environment. “Alan, together with our COO Paul Smith, has had expansion plans into the Life Science sector for several years and has finally been able to engage a skilled team that can deliver their vision. Paul has been at the helm of several major pharmaceutical consultant companies

in the past and has been instrumental in the formation of adi Life Sciences.” “His knowledge and insight within the industry, coupled with his vast experience, will be invaluable to our progression within the adi Group, while helping us consolidate our position in our specialist sector,” Darren affirms. “The Group sees the creation of its new division as a pivotal point in its own history.” The right expertise Set up only a few months ago, the division’s team consists of experts with over 30 years of experience and younger inhouse trained and mentored staff. Darren himself has worked in pharma since 1998. Coming from a design background originally, he has been involved in multi-million-pound design and build contracts for key players in the UK pharma market, providing a range of fit-for-purpose facilities for their operations. “Ultimately, we want to offer all of our clients and stakeholders best value for their investment in us. And that comes with the consideration of what their requirements are, understanding their needs, and providing cost certainty as early as we can in the process,” says Darren. We offer clients our best intuitive advice to develop and define their needs, work with them to deliver, and be efficient and effective in our delivery. Compliance is an extremely important factor in our specialist field, and in many cases is just as important as time, cost and quality.” “Of course, we are also harnessing the sustainability aspects of our project commissions - lean manufacturing, intelligent buildings. vantage is this multifaceted approach, which I don’t think many companies have. Our own focus is in synergy with our parent group’s objectives and values to provide an end-to-end approach and a single point of contact.” He further points out that traditionally, capital expenditure has been a key consideration in the Pharma industry, but as the sector moves through sustainability, other elements have come to the forefront, such as the life-cycle cost, and making operations more sustainable and future-proof. “We have significant expertise with sustainable and LZC technologies and processes, which we include into scheme designs efficiently. This approach ensures that 6

the full measure of true innovation is embedded into our best practice project delivery ethic.” Holistic approach The division’s team possesses extensive expertise in designing and engineering complex and sophisticated facilities. In the vast majority of projects, delivery is subject to stringent standards that must be adhered to for regulatory compliance. The team’s specialist capabilities will be used to deliver controlled cleanroom environments for clients in the pharmaceutical manufacturing of drugs and medicines, viral containment facilities and laboratories of all classifications. “The credibility of our team is important.

Over the coming year (and beyond), I will have a strong focus on promoting our talented team to a wide but targeted audience. Our collective goal and ambitions are to have a market-leading reputation and recognition as ‘the best team to collaborate and partner with’. Our strong in-house design capabilities along with our wider Group’s far-ranging capability and excellence will provide an unrivalled dynamic offering to our clients.” “Where required, we can also harness the additional knowledge and experience of the Group to deliver the solutions effectively and efficiently. Speed to market is important in the Pharma industry, so we

will strive to make the whole process as fast as we can, while ensuring it is holistically considered, trying to avoid any pitfalls that a less-experienced company might fall for, so that we can provide a fit-for-purpose solution.” Darren affirms that constructability and maintainability are at the forefront of the team’s design philosophy. “I believe we have all the components and skillsets to deliver unparalleled excellence for our clients, from project inception, right through to construction, validation, commissioning, as well as after-care. In other words, we can provide fully integrated project execution and ongoing facility maintenance,

giving our clients a true turnkey solution across the life cycle of their project.” Building on the strengths With adi having a wide array of divisions specialised in a variety of sectors, the Group has a unique ability to use its know-how to implement any project from start to finish, with a view to establish long-standing relation-

ships with clients. The same applies to suppliers. “Suppliers are fundamental to our success, and we can draw on longterm relationships within the adi Group. When providing sophisticated environments, we may need to bring in new expertise to supplement adi’s existing supplier base. The key is to deliver exactly what the customer wants.”

To this end, the division is also embracing digitisation and complies with ISO 19 650, the standard related to the organisation and digitisation of information about buildings and civil engineering works. “The client can use all data collected for the life cycle of the building. That is also a key differentiator,” says Darren. Still, the division’s success will be primar-

ily based on the expertise of the team. “As their leader, I empower my people to deliver to the best of their ability. We know the strengths that individuals have, and we will trade on those moving forward to ensure the best performance. The start-up has 10 members now, but I’m hoping that within the next 12 months that number will double,” he concludes. 7
